00:00Soon we'll vote on the nomination of Gail Slater to serve as Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division.
00:13I support her nomination and I urge my colleagues to do the same.
00:20Antitrust is important to me as it is to most Senators.
00:25I've long been concerned about market concentration and anti-competitive practices and industries that impact Iowans,
00:35whether it's agriculture or health care or technology.
00:41These issues don't get the most attention around the United States Senate, but they still impact millions of Americans.
00:51Family farmers and independent producers deserve fair prices for their products.
00:59Seniors deserve affordable prescription drugs.
01:04Children deserve to be safe from predatory behavior on dominant tech platforms.
01:13All of these are antitrust issues.
01:18Attorney General Bondi told me during her confirmation process that she shares my interest in these issues
01:28and that she'd work with me and the Antitrust Division to address these issues.
01:35There's no better person to help her in this project than Gail Slater.
01:43Ms. Slater has the right qualification for this job.
01:49She spent several years practicing antitrust law in private practice
01:56before spending a decade at the Federal Trade Commission handling antitrust investigations and litigation.
02:06In these roles, she learned the nuts and bolts of antitrust enforcement.
02:14Ms. Slater also understands antitrust and economics from a policy perspective.
02:22You know, she served in President Trump's first administration on the National Economic Council,
02:29and she served now Vice President Vance as his economic policy advisor and a member of his Senate staff.
02:40So, Ms. Slater has numerous accomplishments in the antitrust space.
02:48I'm not the only one who thinks Ms. Slater is the right person for the job.
02:55She has received letters of support from nine previous heads of the Justice Department Antitrust Division.
03:05These men and women were appointed by presidents of both political parties, and they wrote, quote,
03:13Ms. Slater has the experience, intelligence, judgment, and leadership skills
03:21necessary to serve as an excellent Assistant Attorney General for the Antitrust Division, end of quote.
03:31Another bipartisan coalition letter commends her, quote,
03:36unique ability to collaborate on a bipartisan basis with stakeholders across the political spectrum,
03:44building coalitions towards common goals, end of quote.
03:49And it might surprise you that the International Brotherhood of Teamsters announced that they support her nomination.
04:00In a rare sign of unity, in the Judiciary Committee I share where we don't get a lot of unity,
04:09Ms. Slater was advanced out of committee by a 20 yes vote to two negative votes.
04:18I hope for a similarly strong bipartisan vote here on the floor.
04:24The Antitrust Division will flourish under Ms. Slater's strong leadership, and I'm proud to support her.
04:34She's ready to serve our country, and we need to get her confirmed quickly.
04:40I yield the floor, suggest the absence of the floor.
