00:00Meanwhile, in today's episode of RSP, we will discuss a very special guest from the Philippine Ballet Theatre

00:08who will return to the stage of a classic ballet full of love, wealth, and deception.

00:14This is The Merry Widow.

00:17We will be joined live here in the studio by some of the main cast of the members

00:22from the production of Eloy Sardesa-Tangalin and Jimmy Lumba.

00:26Good morning and welcome here to Rise and Shine PTN.

00:30Alright, first of all, what is The Merry Widow?

00:33And why is this an important production for the Philippine Ballet Theatre?

00:37The Merry Widow is a production that not all companies worldwide have a version of.

00:47So the Philippine Ballet Theatre is very lucky that in the Philippines,

00:52we are the only company that has a version of The Merry Widow.

00:56I want to ask Eloy, what is the most challenging part in preparing for this?

01:02How did you prepare for this role?

01:05I think when I was given the role, the first thing I did was to research.

01:10As he said, there are people who do ballet in other companies.

01:16So what I did is I watched those, I read about it.

01:22The Merry Widow is also based on an operetta that has spoken dialogue.

01:27So I listened to it to understand what the ballet is saying and what is happening on the scene.

01:32Usually, when it comes to ballet, it's the dance that's talking.

01:35So actually, that's the challenge for us, to relay the story.

01:40Without speaking or movements.

01:43Your role is?

01:44My role is Hana Glawari, a wealthy woman.

01:50That's why you have a lot of stories.

01:53I know.

01:54What is the role of Hana?

01:56Hana is a wealthy young woman.

01:59She got married before, but she was already a widow.

02:04So her husband died.

02:06Now, what will happen is she wants to keep her money in the country because the country is bankrupt.

02:13So she wants to get married to Count Danilo.

02:16Oh, and that's your play.

02:19But actually, they were already past lovers.

02:21So they had a romance before.

02:23They have a history.

02:24So you need to build the chemistry between the two.

02:27Yes, actually.

02:28It's like a teleserie for the Filipinos.

02:39Actually, I'm already part of the third and fourth restaging.

03:02In your opinion, will the public like it?

03:05Well, first, about love.

03:07Is there a story about tragedy?

03:10There's a climax, right?

03:11Yes.

03:12That's not too much of a spoiler.

03:15The story of The Merry Widow is good.

03:17And it's relatable.

03:19It's relatable for the Filipinos.

03:21Because most of the Filipinos are attached when it comes to teleseries.

03:27So basically, it's like a teleserie.

03:29And there are really affairs.

03:33But it's very light, not as hard as...

03:37It's a romantic comedy, actually.

03:39It's a romantic comedy.

03:40Well, of course, to set the mood, music is really needed in a ballet.

03:45How are you going to interpret the songs of Franz Lihar

03:48so that the emotions and feelings of the audience will be more evident?

03:52Actually, we're very lucky to be given such a beautiful choreography.

03:56Actually, this ballet is created by our artistic director, Ron Hainario, the choreographer.

04:02He has made a version of the ballet for the company.

04:06And actually, we're the only company that does The Merry Widow, I think.

04:10Yeah, so...

04:12That's one of the challenges for us, dancers.

04:16How are we going to convey the message to our audience without even speaking a word?

04:23We just need to show it while dancing, with the movements of our arms, our face, our eyes.

04:30So the script you said is just a minimal opera, right?

04:33No, it's originally an opera.

04:37And then you made it into a ballet.

04:39It's different. It's an opera, a ballet, a musical theater.

04:43And you also mentioned that you're the only company that does The Merry Widow.

04:49So what are the lessons that you learned from this play as a performer and as well as being an individual?

04:59Yes, I think since the ballet says a lot about love,

05:05love is a powerful thing and so is wealth.

05:09Yes.

05:11So I think that's where you'll realize being true to intention,

05:17finding genuine relationships.

05:19Because actually, there's a contrast between two lovers.

05:24There's another lover, actually.

05:26We're very true to our love.

05:30Actually, the other pair has an affair.

05:37But you two don't have an affair?

05:39No.

05:40You're loyal.

05:41Loyal, yes.

05:42Fine loyalty.

05:44But I want to know, Jimmy, because you mentioned love and wealth.

05:48Usually, there's a contrast.

05:50I see on Instagram that when you buy love,

05:54sometimes the wealth gets compromised,

05:58so what's your take on that?

06:00You're moving too fast.

06:02No, that's just some of the realities or ideas.

06:06My take is that you need to follow what your heart is telling you,

06:12regardless of what the society is saying.

06:15Because sometimes, society dictates a lot,

06:19so it affects our decision-making.
