00:00Ranking member of the Committee on Rules, Mr. McGovern.
00:02Gentleman is recognized for four minutes.
00:04Mr. Speaker, today most Republicans are wasting time talking about walk-in freezers and refrigerators.
00:13That's what Republicans think is urgent. Commercial freezers and refrigerators.
00:18You know what I think that is? I think that's insane. I think it's unhinged.
00:23It's not what I'm hearing at my town halls. I've done six town halls. Thousands of people have shown up.
00:29Maybe if Republicans actually held town halls and listened to people, they would know what the hell is going on right now.
00:36People are not worried about commercial walk-in freezers or refrigerators, Mr. Speaker.
00:43They're pissed at Elon and his unelected, unappointed bureaucrats for blowing up the Department of Education.
00:52That's what they're worried about.
00:54They're demanding resignations because Trump's national security team recklessly mishandled classified information on unsecured phones.
01:03They might as well have mailed a copy to the Kremlin, for God's sake.
01:08People are mad as hell that you guys are going to try to kill Social Security.
01:13Mr. Speaker, you can say whatever you want, but that's what Republicans want to do.
01:17They want to kill Social Security. That's a fact.
01:21They want to raid Social Security like a piggy bank so Elon can steal people's money and give more tax breaks to billionaires.
01:29I was at a retirement community in my district on Friday, and seniors are scared out of their minds.
01:35They're not stupid. They know what's happening. It's crystal clear.
01:39They see through all the BS, and they know Elon and Trump are trying to sabotage Social Security so they can start kicking people off.
01:48The Social Security website crashed four times this month.
01:52Millions of Americans couldn't log into their accounts.
01:56Elon fired so many people that there's nobody to answer the phones at some Social Security offices.
02:02The lines keep ringing and ringing and ringing.
02:06We don't even know how long wait times are because, get this, they eliminated the program to track customer satisfaction.
02:14And Elon is still lying, saying millions and millions of dead people are collecting Social Security checks and calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme.
02:25Mr. Speaker, that's a lie. It is not true. And he knows it's not true.
02:30And we heard Donald Trump parrot that same propaganda in this chamber because President Elon told him to.
02:37Because they want an excuse to cut seniors off of Social Security.
02:43These guys are rich, out-of-touch billionaires who just don't get it.
02:48They're having champagne and caviar at Mar-a-Lago while senior citizens wait for hours on the phone to talk to somebody.
02:56Trump's Commerce Secretary said if Social Security didn't send out checks for a month, his 94-year-old mother-in-law would not complain.
03:05Well, good for her. But he's a billionaire, for God's sake.
03:09It must be nice to have one in the family. But guess what? Most people are not so lucky.
03:14When I talk to seniors, they tell me one missed Social Security check means going hungry.
03:19It means falling behind on rent. It means skipping medications.
03:23People out there can't afford groceries, but Trump's team is telling them to go buy Tesla stock.
03:30That's their retirement plan. I mean, these people are nuts, Mr. Speaker.
03:34The bottom line is that for Republicans, Social Security is just another thing they can cut to pay for billionaire tax breaks.
03:42Well, guess what, Elon? We are not letting you get your greedy, grubby billionaire hands anywhere near Social Security.
03:50It is not a handout. It is not a giveaway. It's a benefit that 70 million Americans paid into for their entire lives,
03:57expecting that it would be there when they needed it.
04:00It is a promise, and we are going to fight like hell to keep that promise for the people who built this country.
04:07I yield back.
