00:00I'm working on a video about a Pokeball that can absorb anything and at one point while we travel inside the Pokeball
00:06But what does it look like when you're inside a Pokeball? Is it a big void? A digital simulation?
00:12Is it like a realm of inescapable nightmares?
00:18I'll just consult the Pokemon wiki let's find this out
00:24Yep no one knows
00:30Before we get any further, there's brand new merch this year.
00:33That's right. It's the Deconstructed Quarter logo.
00:35It's a classy little thing we're doing on hoodies and t-shirts.
00:37This is a limited design that's going to be on sale for the next nine days.
00:40So if you're interested in snagging one, head on over to quarterdigital.store.
00:45See you there.
00:46What do you think it's like on the inside of a Pokeball?
00:48I think the inside of Pokeball looks like like a CVS.
00:51The Pokemon just wanders up and down the aisles and can't find what he's looking for.
00:55And then eventually just gets called up for battle.
00:58I would like to think it's like their own little like studio apartments.
01:01The lore would have you believe it's like a little condo with like everything they need in there.
01:06I think that that is probably a lie.
01:09I feel like it's like a Matrix pod, man.
01:11They're put in a stasis. They're shoved in their medically induced coma.
01:15Think about every time you've seen one like open up, it's just blinding.
01:17I think they keep them in stun lock just in a bright environment.
01:21Constant flashbangs.
01:22Yeah, yeah, never-ending flashbang.
01:24And when they get out, they just want to fight anything.
01:27Right.
01:27You know what I mean?
01:28Keeps them ready.
01:29Imagine someone's throwing flashbangs at you for days.
01:33And then you finally get let out.
01:34And it's like, hey, as long as you're willing to fight, you can stay out of that environment.
01:37I will fight for you.
01:39Just don't, please don't flashbang me anymore, please.
01:42I can't take it.
01:43I don't know. I kind of subscribe to the idea that like it's stasis lock.
01:47It's kind of like the life of a photon.
01:49Photons don't experience time either.
01:51I mean, I guess they kind of turn into a bunch of photons.
01:53Oh, maybe that's why.
01:55You are turned into light.
01:57And so therefore, you're traveling at the speed of light and you never experience time.
02:01It's like you're getting sucked up one moment and the next moment you're getting sucked out.
02:08So I thought this was gonna be an easy video because it's like they show the inside of a Pokeball a million times.
02:13We'll just look up the episode where they show it and that's what we'll make it look like, right?
02:16Turns out I got Mandela affected and they do not show this at all in the show, which is super weird, right?
02:22What are they hiding from us?
02:24I feel like there's two paths forward here.
02:25The first is we can consult the game's lore and the creators have spoken about it a little bit.
02:30It's kind of inconsistent, but maybe we can piece something together there.
02:33If that doesn't work, well, I mean, this is a live-action video.
02:37Why not just use like hard science and figure out what it would look like for real using like physics or quantum mechanics?
02:43I'm sure that between these two paths, we can find a definitive answer of what it looks like inside a Pokeball.
02:49In the show, we see a creature.
02:51They turn into like white energy and then all the energy gets absorbed into the Pokeball.
02:56If you're going to convert a creature into pure energy, it's going to make an insane amount of energy.
03:02So insane that it makes us have to whip out the old E equals MC squared equation.
03:06For example, an average human weighs about 70 kilograms.
03:09And if you're going to convert that mass into pure energy, you're going to get about 6.29 quintillion joules.
03:17That's enough energy to power humanity for three to four months.
03:21Your neurons in your brain travel anywhere from 6 to 224 miles an hour.
03:26But once you turn into energy, they're going to start traveling at the speed of light,
03:30which is roughly 7 million times faster than that.
03:34If your neurons are traveling at the speed of light, that means your thoughts will be too.
03:37You'd be thinking so fast that time would appear to slow down for you, possibly to a standstill.
03:44Extreme time dilation would take over as you're absorbed into the Pokeball in what seems like an eternity.
03:51Okay, okay. So now that you're actually inside the ball, what does it look like?
03:54Well, in this instance, basically a black hole.
03:57And if you're stuck in there, well, you've got what will feel like an eternity to think about it before you're released.
04:03And I would imagine it would probably break your brain so hard,
04:06you'd come out only being able to say one word, like the name of your species.
04:11Pikachu. Bulbasaur. Hodor.
04:14Hodor! Hodor! Hodor!
04:18This doesn't seem right at all. This is downright frightening.
04:21I don't think nothing would look very good on camera either.
04:24So there's got to be a better option.
04:27Well, in this episode of the original series, we see a moment where Psyduck is in a hollow void.
04:32In the manga, Pokeballs have been shown to be translucent and have Pokemon just shrunken down inside them.
04:37In a way later episode of the anime, we have a potential peek into the interior of a luxury ball.
04:43But none of what we've seen has been very consistent over the years.
04:46So maybe there's someone higher up on the Pokemon team that can clear this up for us.
04:50We can draw knowledge from Junichi Masuda, one of the founders of Game Freak.
04:55He said,
05:00It's a very comfortable environment.
05:02Maybe the equivalent of a high-end suite room in a fancy hotel.
05:06And this makes sense, because if we dig a little more, we find this trophy entry from Super Smash Bros.
05:12that says,
05:17Okay, that's something at least, despite being a throwaway description for a collectible in a non-canon crossover game.
05:22But wait, but wait a second.
05:24Is it a hotel room or a hotel room-sized natural environment?
05:29If it's a hotel suite, then I guess I would be comfortable in it, and probably even like a little Charmander.
05:33But what about a Pokemon like Snorlax?
05:36He's huge.
05:36So maybe the inside of a Pokeball adapts to whatever is inside of it.
05:42So the Ritz-Carlton in downtown LA has a high-end suite that is about 1,200 square feet.
05:48So we can estimate that that's about maybe 12,000 cubic feet in volume.
05:52A person is about two and a half cubic feet of volume.
05:55That's a 4,800 cubic feet to one ratio for a high-end suite to a human.
06:01Let's apply that to Pokemon.
06:03So what about a Charizard?
06:04He's listed at five foot seven, but he's got a lot more gut and girth.
06:07So I would estimate he's got about eight and a half cubic feet of meat on him.
06:11Using our ratio, he would need 40,000 cubic feet of volume to stay in.
06:16That's not like suite status anymore.
06:18That's more like a starter mansion.
06:20And that's not even the largest Pokemon.
06:21That title belongs to a legendary Pokemon called Eternatus,
06:24which would need a suite that's actually the size of a Costco.
06:31Oh, look.
06:31These fans have been waiting in line all day to make some space for the big guy.
06:36That's so nice of them.
06:37The hotel suite theory kind of makes sense, but it starts to lead us in circles.
06:41Like, how did all this stuff get into here?
06:42Is this all made of matter, or is this like a hologram?
06:46Because if it's real matter, then these Pokeballs are going to weigh a ton.
06:49You know, you can't carry like a studio apartment on your belt.
06:52This actually leads us to the conclusion that this world in the Pokeball
06:57would have to be completely digital, like a virtual simulation inside these balls.
07:01That means to travel into them, the Pokeball is actually erasing your matter
07:06and then storing it in digital memory, effectively converting and storing
07:10your present state as an AI living in a simulated world.
07:15And when you're released, the new matter is recompiled at the same quantum state
07:19as when you entered.
07:20And this theory, it holds a lot of water, honestly.
07:22It allows the user to carry multiple balls since they don't have the density
07:25of a neutron star.
07:26It also allows the creature within to exist within a comfortable universe,
07:30tailored for their specific species and size.
07:33And it allows me to visualize the inside of a Pokeball any way I want.
07:38Wait, what?
07:40I was looking for a specific answer, and now I have to decide between everything?
07:46So, I guess I'm back to square one here.
07:49And, I mean, regardless whether or not I've got this visual figured out,
07:54I do need to start filming because we are on a deadline, so...
08:00Oh, hey!
08:02I'm in a Pokeball!
08:04Sam said I couldn't come out until I sell at least one Squarespace subscription,
08:07so I'm going to tell you how cool it is.
08:08If you want to run a business, you're going to need a website.
08:11And if you want a website, you're going to have to design it yourself.
08:13That sounds really scary, but not if you use something like Squarespace,
08:16where they have a bunch of design templates as well as an intelligent design helper
08:20that can let you just use plain English and your regular old mouse and keyboard
08:23to click and move things around to build your very own website right to your needs.
08:26And, of course, if you're going to run a business off a website,
08:28you're going to need fancy things like a way to process payments,
08:31or like a storefront, or maybe membership pages,
08:33or parts of the website that's only locked off to subscribers.
08:35Well, you know what? Squarespace has you covered.
08:37It has all these advanced features, so you can take credit card payments,
08:41you can set up members-only sections, you can do storefronts,
08:43you can do all this stuff through Squarespace.
08:45We've used Squarespace here at Corridor.
08:47My wife has used Squarespace for her business website for a decade.
08:50It's great.
08:51If you want to check this all out for yourself right now, you can.
08:53And when you're ready to make a purchase,
08:54you go to squarespace.com slash Corridor Crew,
08:56and you'll get 10% off your first website or domain.
08:59And it's when that happens that I'll hear a little ding,
09:01and I'll finally be able to leave this Pokeball.
09:04If you're looking for it, the link's in the description below.
09:06So there you go. Click on that, and there it is.
09:09All right, let's go check up on Sam.
09:16So we had the honor of hosting,
09:18or I should say we have the honor of hosting a YouTube Udall
09:21coming out here, I think, in March.
09:22It's going to be a celebration of the visual effects community on YouTube,
09:26and we have this cool video that we got to star in that YouTube produced
09:30of us kind of introducing all these cool visual effects channels
09:32and talking about all the cool things happening in the community here.
09:35The crazy thing about it is that because we're hosting it,
09:36we're kind of the face of it right now,
09:38and, you know, they shot this really produced video, which is amazing,
09:42except we now need to make sure that we have a cool video
09:45coming out on our channel when the Udall drops
09:47because we want to make a good first impression.
09:49So when they come on over, we want to show them a cool short film.
09:52So Sam has taken it upon his shoulders to be the guy that does that.
09:57Yeah, you know, no pressure,
09:58but all the eyes of the public on YouTube will be turned towards us
10:01and we need to impress them.
10:10We're here at the park to film the beginning of the video.
10:13I don't know. It's about five or six setups,
10:15but they're long ones.
10:16You know, there's not this isn't a video about individual shots here.
10:19These are long takes about performance improv.
10:22So, you know, we're going to take our time.
10:23Check it out.
10:24I made the world's first portable optimizing kinetic endosphere
10:27and it's equipped with a biological acquisition lasso laser.
10:31It's pretty cool. Look at that.
10:33The biggest challenge I've had so far today was just memorizing that acronym
10:36that is pokeball,
10:38but it's actually portable optimizing kinetic endosphere
10:41with a biological acquisition lasso laser.
10:47It's hard to say, man.
10:48It's kind of sinister not to actually establish
10:50what happens in a pokeball for the show.
10:52Like if you they're injured in a battle,
10:53they can't be sitting in that ball going.
10:54Oh, my arms are broken like for you know,
10:57until you take him to the hospital kind of brings up that other question
10:59that you've heard before.
11:00Like if you teleport of all your atoms are disassembled
11:02and then reassembled another spot.
11:03Did you not just kill yourself and make a copy of yourself?
11:06So like every time Pokemon's coming out at pokeball are going into it.
11:08Are they dying?
11:09And the pokeball is just reassembling a copy of them.
11:12Is that why Pikachu doesn't like going to the pokeball
11:14because Pikachu is aware of all the souls that are being stacked up.
11:19That's it for the park.
11:20Now it's on to downtown to film the last two shots of the video.
11:24This is hot, this is heavy.
11:27I can feel the height.
11:28I haven't seen it, but I feels tall.
11:29And then tomorrow we have to film at our studio where we have a cop car
11:33and more importantly we have Brett reprising his role
11:35as the police officer 01.
11:38What's up Austin?
11:38What's up son, you're back reprising your role as a cop?
11:40I am back once again as a cop.
11:42You know, I have a blast being characters
11:44where I can kind of just show my face for a little bit
11:46and then just get death instantly.
11:53You know with these with these world's largest videos
11:54shooting on an iPhone makes it real simple.
11:56You don't got a lot of gear.
11:57You don't have a lot of extra stuff.
11:58The thing that I'm unsure about is the VFX.
12:01I don't know exactly what Sam's plan is for all these big pokeball
12:04inside the pokeball virtual world shots.
12:07So this pressure is on for Sam to get this thing done.
12:10Yeah.
12:12Is that a wrap?
12:14Is that a chicken salad wrap?
12:17Feel good.
12:18Very tiring.
12:19Will I be able to finish all the VFX in time?
12:24I have no idea.
12:25Even though we have like a lot of people at our studio.
12:28Everyone's really busy right now working on other stuff.
12:29So I might have to just kind of do a Sam special on this.
12:32We'll find out.
12:35Yeah, so basically I've been working on the more advanced
12:39effects in this video being people getting sucked into the
12:41balls people getting shot out of the balls that stuff is
12:44challenging and I thought you know what rather than like
12:47front load this experience with doing the easy shots.
12:52Let's let's start with hard ones because basically I was
12:55like, you know what I'm going to knock out these interior
12:57pokeball shots pretty quickly because I have a clear idea
13:00of how to do them.
13:00But the moment I started working on them.
13:02Yeah, I kind of threw up the whole plan.
13:05I've attempted to track all the shots.
13:07Some of them work.
13:08Some of them need additional tracking.
13:09I started to rotoscope and like mask off one shot to isolate
13:13them and it looks like total butt cheeks.
13:15And then also more than anything else.
13:17I started doing some tests here and I'm just like if these
13:20guys are getting trapped in like a white void, like I always
13:23imagined it was a white void, but I'm just not really feeling
13:26it yet because it's I don't know that effect just feels so
13:30minimalist to the point where it starts detracting from
13:34the shot and when it's too simple, it instead brings the
13:38attention now to the actual problems in the visual effects,
13:41which are just the bare bones tracking roto all that stuff.
13:44So I'm trying to find out something that's a little more
13:46visually interesting and that's pretty hard right now.
13:50This is based on like semi-realistic conceptual physics
13:55concepts.
13:56So it can't just be like a pixelated Minecraft Island in
13:58there. It has to be something that looks like it's messing
14:02with time and space a little bit.
14:04Technically.
14:04I have six days left.
14:07It's looking like I'm not going to hit that.
14:10So you do have Jordan helping for one shot though, right?
14:12He's helping on one shot.
14:13Yes.
14:14He's working on one of the hardest shots too.
14:16So that's it's huge.
14:19I'm sucking cities.
14:22So yeah, Sam came to me with a shot.
14:24It's the last shot in the entire Pokeball video.
14:26It means a lot to me that I do this.
14:28Well, we've got this big one-er where we're transitioning
14:31into the scene adding skyscrapers to the skyline.
14:34We've got cranes that are working to attach this Pokeball
14:38to the back of a space shuttle and then have all of that
14:41suck up as well.
14:42Basically turn into particles.
14:44So it's a lot going on but I do have a working system for
14:48sucking any building you want.
14:51You can suck non-stop the way that the system works is
14:56I'm using what's called the pyro source spread inside of
14:59Houdini where I can choose an ignition source of temperature
15:02and basically cover the entire building and fuel.
15:05This is like mass arson and I can light a certain section
15:09of it and that burn will spread over the entirety of the
15:12building.
15:13This is where the particles are going to emit from the sucking
15:16particles so to speak.
15:17So in this way, I can create a trail of sucking that only
15:20lasts a little bit of time, right?
15:21Because it's a trail of sucking.
15:23Yeah, you never been he creates a trail.
15:25I'll call it a trail of burning.
15:26Would that make you feel better feels better?
15:27But yeah point is we get this band of burning and then take
15:31the position of the pokeball in 3D space and put in a tractor
15:35in the middle of it and basically say hey any particles
15:37that exist in the scene come to me on top of that.
15:40I can take this same band and I can basically say hey, if
15:43you've already been burned, you shouldn't even exist anymore.
15:46It's a it's don't you say to real life.
15:50Yeah, it's why it's why I'm not a doctor.
15:52So it's actually eroding the building and it does give the
15:55illusion the building is actually being evaporated now
15:58that the system's been built.
15:59I can simply apply it to every single building and crane and
16:03the spaceship and the foreground ground and all the stuff
16:05in the scene to create that cohesive sucking effect that
16:08said I still need to do it now.
16:10There's a lot of simulations ahead and and we don't have
16:14much time.
16:14Thankfully.
16:15We have Casey in house.
16:16So Casey Ferris is actually a YouTuber in his own right.
16:18He does a lot of resolve and fusion tutorials and has a course
16:21and all that good stuff and him and his editor Dan have graced
16:24us with their presence for a month kind of like Markiplier
16:26did like just kind of getting a vibe and hanging out and
16:28helping where they can and he couldn't have come at a better
16:31time truly because I've already given him a task in this
16:34shot in particular to help rebuild some of the geometry that's
16:37missing.
16:37The thing about Sam is he's a one-man army.
16:40He's been working so hard on this all by himself.
16:42So it's nice that we're getting more people involved in hopefully
16:45a way that doesn't kill Sam.
16:47That's my goal.
16:48I want to kind of suck away some of the stress, you know, you
16:52know what I'm saying though, like no, no, no, hold on.
16:55I feel like maybe the way I said it was, please don't put this
16:57in the edit.
16:58I feel like we got off on the wrong foot.
17:01Well,
17:04This video is really hard to make.
17:05What does the inside of a pokeball look like?
17:07Well, I thought about this a lot to the point where maybe I
17:10think I'm overthinking things a little bit here.
17:12There's a lot of options and all kind of make a lot of sense.
17:15But at the end of the day, I've had to make a decision, which
17:18is simply just make it look cool.
17:21And in a funny way, I mean, it kind of takes a little bit from
17:26each idea and combines them.
17:28This is the inside of the pokeball.
17:30As I was writing this video with Niko, he said, ah, it would
17:33be funny if this was powered by a black hole.
17:35So inside the pokeball is none other than a black hole at the
17:39very bottom that is powering everything.
17:41But actually when we're inside of it, we're actually looking
17:45through what looks to be kind of like frosted glass.
17:48Even though the manga is preposterous, how would there just be
17:51like a little marble with a Bulbasaur in there? For the sake
17:54of this video, it does look pretty sweet. And then to kind of
17:57spice it up.
17:57I just, you know, like, hey, you know what, I'm a big fan of
18:00like Time Bandits and like that weird cosmic antiquity kind
18:05of situation.
18:05So on Kitbash, I was looking around on there for some stuff
18:09and they have an armillary.
18:11I was like, you know what, that's pretty sweet too.
18:13I don't know if the Time Bandits reference is landing.
18:15It also looks like the thing from Ant-Man Quantumania.
18:18Oh sweet.
18:18Well, there you go.
18:19That's more for the kids.
18:20That's more for the kids, for the zoomers out there.
18:22It's like Ant-Man.
18:24That's how this all combines.
18:25I mean, it's just the idea is like I want it to look cool and
18:27it needs to make sense for the story. And the best part, even
18:30though it's not perfectly accurate to lore or anything, it's
18:34still able to draw from it and also match what we're trying
18:37to accomplish at the same time.
18:38So I think that's really cool.
18:40So if you're watching this, that means the video is out and
18:42that's great because I actually have a lot more VFX to do
18:44that aren't interior pokeball shots that are also super sweet.
18:47So if you want to see them head on over to Corridor Digital,
18:49check it out.
18:50It's a sweet classic video.
18:52I secretly made this for my son.
18:55Oops, said that out loud.
