00:00According to studies, 70-80% of women can have myoma.
00:10What is it and how does it affect the health of women?
00:15That's what we're going to find out here in Seyni Doc.
00:17We'll be joined by Dr. Anafe Orbigoso-Gloria, an OBGYN.
00:24Good morning, Dr. Anafe. Welcome back to Rise and Shine Filipinas.
00:27Good morning.
00:29Magandang umaga, Rise and Shine Filipinas. Magandang umaga, Dianne and Audrey.
00:35For everyone's information, Doc, what is myoma?
00:42Myoma is an abnormal muscle tissue growth in the uterus.
00:50It's a tumor that grows and forms in our uterus.
00:56It occurs in almost 80% or 8 out of 10 women.
01:08Alright, Doc. There are different types of myoma. What are the differences?
01:16Myoma starts in the uterus, in the muscle.
01:20When it grows, it can be a submucosal.
01:28It stays in the muscle, but it stretches the muscle.
01:32It's intermural.
01:34When it comes out, it's called a subserous.
01:39Myoma can also grow in other parts of the body.
01:45Sometimes, it can go down to the cervix.
01:49That's what we call a cervical myoma.
01:54What is the age of myoma?
01:58What are the symptoms of myoma?
02:01Is there a chance that there are no symptoms?
02:04Or are there different symptoms?
02:07It depends on what type of myoma a woman has.
02:13As we mentioned, there are different types of myoma.
02:17Depending on the age group, myoma is more likely to be diagnosed
02:26at the peak of reproductive age, which is around 16 to 44 years old.
02:34But it starts when a woman is still young.
02:37It grows slowly.
02:40When it grows, the first symptom is bleeding,
02:47especially when it's near the lining of the uterus.
02:52When the myoma grows, the muscle of the uterus is stretched.
02:59When it grows, it can cause pressure symptoms.
03:04It's like carrying a person.
03:07As it grows, it adds other organs to our uterus,
03:13and it becomes heavier.
03:16That's what causes pelvic pressure.
03:19That pelvic pressure can cause difficulty in urinating,
03:24difficulty in urinating,
03:26and even if there are no symptoms,
03:30it can cause difficulty in urinating
03:33because the myoma blocks where the baby should grow
03:38or where the uterus of the man should pass.
03:43What are the possible symptoms of myoma?
03:49According to studies, it's more common in those who have it.
03:55If you have a myoma,
03:58there's a high incidence of myoma.
04:03Other than that, there are studies that depend on the gender.
04:10For example, it's more common in blacks compared to Americans.
04:17There's also an effect called endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
04:23Those are the chemicals that can induce the root of myoma
04:28in our food, in our body.
04:33Although, there's also a study that those who smoke
04:38don't have a myoma that often.
04:41Doctor, when it comes to treatment,
04:44what are the options here in the Philippines?
04:49Of course, we address what the symptoms are.
04:53When it comes to bleeding,
04:55usually, we address that first.
04:58If there's an anemia, we give the medicine.
05:01So, we start with the medical treatment,
05:04especially if you want to save or you don't want to have an operation.
05:10The hormonal treatment is also included.
05:13We start with the injection of hormones
05:16or sometimes, the hormones that we take.
05:19Then, we resort to an operation.
05:23In terms of operation,
05:26it depends on the age of the patient,
05:31if he or she is already a completed family
05:35or if he or she doesn't want to have an operation.
05:37Of course, it depends on the patient's desire.
05:41For an operation,
05:43it can be done inside the uterus or the myoma by hysteroscopy.
05:53It can also be done by laparoscopy.
05:56And then, most often, it's an open surgery.
05:59Meaning, they will really open it and remove the tumor.
06:02And then, we also have robotic surgery to remove tumors.
06:08Alright, doctor.
06:09I wonder if there are preventive measures that a woman can do
06:12to avoid myoma.
06:16That, definitely, we cannot say.
06:19But, of course, we always mention a healthy lifestyle.
06:23Just in case, we can stop the effect of endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
06:31So, meaning avoiding processed food
06:34and be cautious to what you apply to your body.
06:37It has to be more natural or organic.
06:40Even your hair products, your makeup, or whatso.
06:44And then, of course, it's also good that we have a check-up.
06:48So that we can see, even if we don't have any symptoms,
06:53even if it's just once a year,
06:55we visit our friendly OB-GYN
06:58to assess the risk factors
07:01and the conditions that should be prevented in our age group.
07:05There, it's better to have a check-up for prevention.
07:08Well, thank you very much for all the information that you shared with us this morning,
07:12Dr. Anafe Orbegoso-Gloria,
07:14from Libre Intermed for our viewers.
07:17Thank you very much.
07:19Thank you very much to all of you.
07:21And good morning.
