Seth Payne took some time to go over Cam Robinson's film and he shares his takeaways here.

00:00Cam Robinson, I I went back and I just kind of spent some time watching him more than I had when he was initially signed
00:06I am like we've heard Clint say in the in the promo
00:10I'm feeling better and better about the fact that okay
00:13All right
00:13Like the dust is settled and you have a viable starting caliber left tackle on this offensive line
00:20And like many offensive lines in the league where you get it
00:24You can get a really good performance without having it replete with absolute studs all over the place
00:30You just got to have viable starters
00:33Robinson in a lot of ways is
00:36Kind of a muted version of what Laramie Tunsil was which I know doesn't excite a whole lot of people
00:42But yeah, I'm gonna need more. Yeah, he doesn't cost 20 million dollars per year. That's a good start. Yep
00:47Yeah, yeah, that's that's the big key is it's a one-year up to 14 million dollar contract very much a prove-it deal
00:54But he's a guy that in Jacksonville, I think I think in the minds of Jaguars fans
00:59It's probably a lot how we are with Titus Howard where Titus Howard is just fine as a tackle
01:06The problem is it feels like he's never really lived up to his potential. They like he's fine
01:11You can have him as a starting right tackle on any offensive line in the league and he's not gonna be the problem
01:17It's just that you feel like you're not quite getting everything out of him
01:21I think Cam Robinson has probably been that same same way in Jacksonville. He is
01:27Very impressive at times in pass protection. He uses just like Laramie Tunsil uses his hands really well
01:33He's got really long arms and he uses like he'll reach out and just jolt guys and stop him dead in their tracks
01:39his weakness is in where he's not as good of a pass protector as Laramie Tunsil is guys can get into him with power a
01:45little bit and
01:46And and bulldoze him some that's what when Will Anderson played him last year. There were times where we'll just got just
01:54Like frozen in the Han Solo stuff. What is that carbonite carbonite frozen and carbonite at times?
02:01But there's because because Cam Robinson just reached out and snatched him
02:05there are other times where Will Anderson was able to get on an edge and kind of just
02:09Get up underneath Cam Robinson's pads and get him on skates back into the quarterback
02:13So but but very passable pass protector and with really good hands
02:18the the thing is that just like Laramie Tunsil, he's not much of a run blocker and
02:24What I'm what I'm trying to be generous with right this moment is that I think a lot of times
02:30When Laramie Tunsil wasn't a good run blocker
02:33It always felt like I don't know if Laramie Tunsil just gives a single day, right? Does he care about?
02:38Actually, yes, he did not like he did not use his athleticism and his natural strength as well as you could have as a run blocker
02:45I think with Robinson
02:47It's just that he he lacks he lacks strength at times both in pass protection
02:51Like when he's giving up those bull rushes, but also in the run game
02:55I just don't think he has the the lower body strength of the core strength to really tie it all together
03:00And you'll see guys like we'll had a couple really nice plays where he stood him up and made a play
03:05But he but he shows a willingness on combo blocks and double teams and things like he keeps his legs churning and driving
03:12He'll pivot his hips around to get in the right position to where at least he's not completely losing the down
03:18It's just I don't you know, he's going into his ninth year in his career. I don't think that's necessarily something that's gonna change
03:24It's not like all of a sudden he's gonna go through a second puberty and get stronger right or anything like that
03:29But for the price tag and the contract, I think it's a really good prove-it deal for him
03:34And I don't I don't worry about him the way I would worry about a lot of other guys that might start it left
03:39Yeah, that's that's the thing like if he if he didn't have those flaws you're talking about
03:43He's not available for one year 12 million dollars, right?
03:49Wouldn't be on the Texans. Yeah. Yeah, and he also, you know, and he's he's had some nagging injuries and whatnot. So yeah, so overall
03:58Compared to how you felt the day the signing was announced
04:01Yeah, do you feel better after doing your film study on him do you feel better worse or about the same as I feel better
04:06I feel better. I feel I think
04:09Initially, my thought was alright. Yeah, there's still gonna be competition it hopefully every spot on the offensive line right now
04:17Unless a rookie comes in and really overperforms or something
04:21I'm guessing on day one cam Robinson's gonna be the starter the big wild card would be all right
04:27What do they think of Blake Fisher are they looking at him right now as a swing tackle or they want Titus Howard to start
04:33at left guard and
04:35Maybe move Lake and Tomlinson over to right and he hasn't played right guard at all in his career
04:40I don't think he's taking a single snap at right guard. I think the most likely scenario is Titus Harder towered at right tackle
04:47cam Robinson at left tackle
04:49That probably Tomlinson at left guard and you've got Blake Fisher still continue to learn and progress and be the swing tackle
04:56Well, that's interesting. Um the the Blake Fisher part of that. He's a second-round pick and
05:02It may look second-round picks aren't a lock to become
05:05Pro-bowlers or even starters or any first-round picks aren't a lock to become starters
05:09But in on a team like this
05:11Where there's been so much all of a sudden so much churn at tackle
05:15You know was Laramie Tunsell etched in ink Titus Howard in ink and then you see what happens with Blake Fisher
05:20you you now have a scenario where Blake Fisher was actually starting at the end of the year last year for this team because the
05:26offensive line needed that
05:28shuffling to accommodate the interior the offensive line
05:31I
05:32Wonder how that makes people feel about Blake Fisher as a draft pick if he hasn't been able to if indeed
05:37Week one is what you just laid out with Howard at right tackle and Robinson at left tackle and Blake Fisher hasn't been able to
05:44To crack that crack that code. Yeah, I think the whole thing about Blake Fisher was that
05:50It goes into that old dynamic that I always find entertaining except when it's my own team
05:55It which is you everybody acknowledges that a guy's a little bit of a project
06:00But then as soon as you see that he's a project you're irate that he's a project
06:04Yeah, like Blake Fisher the the common thought and thing said about him on draft night was wow
06:09This is a guy to get in the second round. Maybe if he stayed at Notre Dame one more year
06:13He would have been a first rounder
06:14But he just needs to fill out a little bit learn how to play as a lankier guy all that stuff
06:19And I thought last year when he had opportunities to play he very much showed the upside
06:24But then he also showed the side of him. That's a rookie that needed more playing time that mean maybe need some physical maturation
06:31Yeah in with offensive linemen more so than any other position that the physical maturation is a real thing
06:36Do you see guys kind of transition from being overgrown adolescents to to full-grown men? It's kind of like in the first puberty
06:44There's a first puberty and then there's an o-line NFL puberty right in your first puberty
06:49Think about the kids, you know that were like they had a huge growth spurt and all of a sudden
06:55They're just they're kind of like all over the place. They're like one of those one of those inflatable
07:01Commercial guys out in front of a tire store. Yeah. Yeah, they're um, they're a car dealership
07:06They're they got to learn how to use all that mass and all that length
07:10Mm-hmm, and I think Blake Fisher is still a little bit in that stage
07:13So I it doesn't for if you say well, okay
07:18Blake Fisher doesn't start over two guys who are established NFL veteran offensive tackles
07:24I don't worry about Blake Fisher at all
07:26I think that's a and especially when one of those tackles is on a one-year deal true that I think that gives the Texans
07:32If they don't draft an offensive tackle, you know time to kind of figure it out Blake Fisher at some point
07:38We'll start when one of those guys almost inevitably gets injured. Yeah. Yeah, so
07:44I'm I'm cool with that part of it
07:46Text message Jim Adler the Texas hammer text line didn't the Texans sign Trent Brown. They did they did on Friday. Yes
07:52Yeah, Trent Brown. This is why I'm not factoring Trent Brown into the equation
07:56Trent Brown got a one-year two million dollar deal three million dollar deal. Yeah, he's coming off a torn patellar tendon
08:03he is
08:05Got to be 30 something years old because he's been in the league came in in 2015
08:09He was a second round pick of the Niners in 2015. So he's probably 31 or 32 years old
08:15But he's like he's six seven six eight three hundred and sixty or seventy pounds
08:20Has had some good solid play in his career, but it's he's one of these guys
08:25He's kind of like the offensive line version of Mercedes Lewis the tight end
08:28We'll have one really good year and then the next year you're like what what's what what's going on with this guy?
08:33um, a lot of it's due to injuries, I think yeah, so the
08:38Prognosis for a patellar tendon tear is a lot like it used to be for Achilles tendon tears
08:44It's still really dicey and especially for a guy who's in his 30s
08:49I think they're very much looking at him as hey, let's bring him in
08:52they're probably planning on starting him on the PUP and
08:55Just see what we get out of him
08:57But I wouldn't factor him into any kind of opening day roster or opening day lineup at least remember when he was in
09:052019
09:06He was one of the marquee free agents back then because that was a big deal because that was the offseason
09:12Where the Texans were coming off of a season where they had they started Julian Davenport at left tackle for a big chunk of that
09:19Year, you know, they had traded Dwayne Brown and I remembered I remember Trent Brown's free agency
09:24Like it was yesterday because there was a there were a lot of Texan fans
09:28clamoring for
09:29The Texans to sign Trent Brown and he signed a huge deal with the Raiders and actually was pretty good with the Raiders for a year
09:36So he made a Pro Bowl with the Raiders. He was yeah, he was a decent signing for them
09:39But he was he was the belle of the ball. That's five or six years ago. No, I think he's yeah, and he's look
09:44He's got experience
09:46With Kaylee with Popovich and with Nick Casario
09:50So this is a classic aging veteran probably under you know
09:54Popovich knows that younger guys can probably lean on him the Trent Brown will pick up the scheme
09:59But he's just a he's a huge question mark because of his injury status right now
10:03Yeah, he's probably good to have it probably good to have in the meeting rooms at the very least. Yeah. Yeah
10:07He feels like a body who's there for the off the field stuff
10:11It may be even more than the on the field with potential upside. Yeah, a little bit like a cam Akers
10:16He's like a much much larger. He's like three cam Akers. He is
10:22Eight cam Akers, yeah
10:26So, yeah, that's that's where I am
10:29And I think that the goal of going into the drafts without being overly desperate in any one position
10:34I think that part of the process
10:36Has been completed on the offensive and defensive line side of the ball if you look at the defensive line
10:42All right, you you get Sheldon Rankin's back in the building
10:45You feel encouraged about Tim settle and some of the things he did last year
10:48They bring Mario Edwards back on the offensive side of the ball
10:51You've signed a couple of veteran guards that aren't huge headline signings
10:56And you bring in Cam Robinson at left tackle there's not as much of a glaring
11:03Desperation to get a young guy in who himself would have been a coin flip whether he's any good or not either
11:08So is the old saying is desperation is a horrible judge of talent because you start grasping and reaching
11:15I think that right now it puts you in a better position to take
11:19Closer to the best player available in the draft
11:21Maybe it's best offensive lineman available at 25
11:24And I think that it's hard to find a mock draft where you don't see at least a few really intriguing
11:30Offensive line. Yes, it picked 25. Yeah, there's a lot of good ones there at 25. I think for me
11:35I don't know man
11:36I feel like a weapon at wide receiver for 20 for the season right for this season
11:41Not for the long term you're drafting for the long term. They could use a lot of things
11:45But for this season, I feel like that wide receiver
11:49I'll call it wide receiver to like the the the outside wide receiver opposite
11:54Nico Collins is a bigger need now than anything the offensive line
11:59They've put a bunch of guys in that room that I think he can find five that if well coached
12:03Which is a caveat you bring up repeatedly appropriately
12:06So if well coached they can be an average offensive line
12:09Which is all I'm looking for this year is be average just be better than what you were last year if you're significantly better than
12:15What you were last year you're an average offensive line
12:17And they can be I did they can be a better than average line just with like with the guys
12:23They have if you look at various teams like the Bucs one of our listeners brought up the Rams
12:28I thought that was a good example last year
12:31really the Ravens to there's every year there's teams that
12:35Overperform based on what you think of these guys moving into it and a lot of it just comes down to
12:40The scheme and how well they're coached at the positional level and everything else
12:44I have to admit one thing too because I thought back on Friday's show show. Yeah, I
12:48Did it I did it for an entire segment in my mind. I swapped out the two new guards
12:55at Ingram and Lake and Tomlinson
12:58So at Ingram comes via, Minnesota, right Lake and Tomlinson comes via
13:04Seattle and before that the Jets and the 49ers
13:06Yeah
13:07I keep whenever I say Lake and Tomlinson
13:10I think the lakes of Minnesota the land of a thousand lakes and
13:15immediately my mind Lake and Tomlinson is at Ingram and
13:19So you really got to check me every time we start talking about the guards. It's very different guys. Yeah. Yeah
