00:00On Sunday 16 March, Newcastle United Football Club defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao
00:05Cup final at Wembley Stadium. After decades of not taking home a major trophy, the drought
00:11finally ended, marking a historical event for the city. Following the club's triumph,
00:16Councillor Karen Gilgower, leader of Newcastle City Council, nominated Eddie Howe for the
00:20Freedom of the City of Newcastle. This honour is the city's highest accolade and recognises
00:25individuals who have made significant contributions to the community.
00:31Dan Burns has been nominated for the Freedom of Northumberland. Councillor Glenn Sanderson,
00:36leader of Northumberland County Council, proposed this honour in recognition of Burns' pivotal
00:39role in the Carabao Cup win and his representation of the region. Both nominations are pending
00:46approval.
00:47As many will know, Newcastle United's upcoming celebration of their Carabao Cup victory is
00:53set to take place on Saturday 29 March from 4pm until 8pm at the Town War. The celebration
01:00will feature a DJ, a live band, highlights of the team's journey to Wembley, a full screening
01:06of the Carabao Cup final and appearances by special guests. The Newcastle United First
01:11Teams squad and manager Eddie Howe will lift the Carabao Cup on stage, which will be an
01:16iconic moment for the team that will go down in history no doubt.
01:20For the weekend, supporters were required to register their interest to attend the event
01:24following a phased priority system, where season ticket holders could get registered
01:28first, followed by Mags and Mags Plus members, then finally all the other supporters. This
01:35undoubtedly caused a lot of online controversy as many feel it's not fair on a lot of supporters
01:40to celebrate in this manner. I spoke with people in Newcastle to find out about their
01:44views on this historical match itself and whether they'll be attending the celebrations
01:48on Saturday.
01:50Well obviously I'm chuffed to bits for Newcastle United, always a Toon fan, and I used to go
01:56to the matches years ago when Kevin Keegan used to play for them, talking a few years
02:00ago, but I live in Scotland now so I haven't really been to any matches for a long time,
02:05but I'm chuffed for them so that's it, as long as they win, that's all that matters.
02:10I'm absolutely buzzing about the win and I'll be going, I will be celebrating a lot, my
02:16family are big Newcastle fans, it'd be nice to just meet all the fans up and have a nice
02:22time. I'm not really bothered, I would have preferred a period because everyone can get
02:27involved but it's quite limited with the numbers, if it's with the news it's a lot more of it.
02:33Over the moon, but unfortunately I won't be attending the celebrations, I just lost my
02:40father recently so I'm a bit occupied with that, and then I've got a few Palestinian
02:45activities happening on that day so I might be going to one. It was happening here in
02:49town actually but they changed the venue because of that cup celebration so they're having
02:54it in North Shields, Ridley Bay, that neck of the woods.
