During a House Commerce Committee hearing prior to the congressional recess, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) spoke about tailoring NIL legislation to protect all universities and not just major sports schools.

00:00Go blue!
00:02Thank you, Ranking Member Pallone.
00:04Before I dive in, I want to echo the Ranking Member's earlier comments.
00:09National Institutes of Health funding is vital.
00:11I've heard from countless researchers in my district who are terrified about what this means
00:16for the future of biomedical research in the United States.
00:19This action by the Trump administration threatens to undo the progress
00:23our nation's premier research universities have made
00:26and will stunt future scientific breakthroughs.
00:29I'm hopeful my colleagues will join us to fight for colleges and universities
00:34to receive adequate funding from NIH to support their vital research missions.
00:40But with today's hearings on NAL, I want to turn to college sports.
00:44College sports are the lifeblood of so many communities across the country.
00:49As someone who represents a significant college athletic population at schools big and small,
00:56I'm committed to crafting federal legislation that ensures all college athletes are heard,
01:03protected, and prioritized.
01:06I'm lucky to have both the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University,
01:10two very different schools we've got to protect,
01:12for their phenomenal college athletic programs and their expertise.
01:17I want to thank the Chair for holding this hearing.
01:20With everything happening in college sports since the last time we convened on this topic,
01:24I think it's important to start these conversations early this Congress.
01:28I thank Member Schakowsky, my colleague Ms. Trahan, and other members of this committee
01:34on federal legislation that both protects and empowers college athletes.
01:39This isn't just about the top athletes on the top 40 football and basketball teams.
01:44We need to get this right for more than 500,000 college athletes nationwide.
01:51And with that, I yield back.
