00:00Several key measures are being implemented, including repopulating the forest with prey
00:07animals to prevent human-wildlife conflict, says Nick Nazmi Nick Ahmad.
00:12The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister said the initiative was still in
00:17its initial stages and conducted in small batches.
00:21There's also talk, I mean it's still early stages, it's been done in small batches about
00:25repopulating the forest with prey animals, for the tigers for example.
00:31But of course, one deer costs about RM10,000 and you have to put what's natural to them.
00:37You can't put other animals, normal goat, it doesn't work that way.
00:45Nick Nazmi adds the government had implemented wildlife crossings to allow safe road passages.
00:52So what the government is doing, one is to of course allow for these wildlife crossings.
00:58So on roads, we've built, there's been viaducts that have been built to allow for wildlife
01:05to cross.
01:06The CRL is almost entirely elevated, similarly on that same principle.
01:11But also there's an issue of how can we cut across, for example, oil palm plantations,
01:17because by nature, I mean when it's a plantation, the vegetation is different.
01:23It's been done in a few places, including in Sabah, I know, where they cut across.
01:27I mean, it's the landowner, it's a palm oil plantation, they allow a certain corridor
01:32so that for elephants, because it's a win-win, because otherwise the elephants would go through
01:36their plantations and destroy the trees.
01:38So if they keep it forested and all that, it allows it to be done with less conflict.
01:45In addition, the government will continue to provide food banks for elephants, including
01:50the one in Johor.
01:52But also to educate the public on how to coexist, certainly with certain wildlife, and be able
02:00to understand the race and all that when they are in those situations.
