00:00Before watching the video, let me remind you that there is more content on the Hotpoint website.
00:04The employment opportunities in Uganda are rare.
00:07Many young people face the dilemma of graduation and unemployment.
00:11According to the latest survey by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics,
00:13the unemployment rate of the country has risen from 9% in 2019 to 12% in 2021.
00:20Among them, the unemployment rate of young people aged 18 to 30 is up to 17%.
00:24The unemployment rate of young people in urban areas is up to 19%.
00:29In order to support themselves and their families,
00:31young people have taken a different path.
00:33They have started motorbikes to provide delivery and transportation services,
00:37which has led to the Boda Boda motorcycle industry.
00:41However, as the number of motorbikes increases,
00:43riders violate traffic rules,
00:45and the danger of overtaking becomes more and more serious,
00:47which affects the safety of pedestrians.
00:49The authorities also said that
00:50they wanted to drive the riders out of the streets of the central commercial area,
00:55but they were strongly resisted.
00:59The number of motorbikes has risen to four,
01:00and a large number of Boda Boda motorcycles
01:03have been riding on the busy streets of Kampala, the capital of Uganda.
01:07As you can see from the video,
01:08some motorcycles are still tied with more than a dozen packages or baskets,
01:12which is a strong contrast to the small number of riders in front of them.
01:15Some people even took part in drawing lots,
01:18which caused a stir in the local government.
01:20However, the police often intercept and confiscate vehicles on the street.
01:24Some riders complain that the police are the troublemakers.
01:27The thing which causes accidents is the police.
01:30When you reach a traffic light,
01:31someone just comes and grabs your keys.
01:34So that's why Boda Boda,
01:37we just pass,
01:38we just break that rule.
01:40Sometimes others, they use one way,
01:43so there you can be safe,
01:45so that they can give you money,
01:47small money which you have,
01:48but if they arrest you,
01:49that money which you have worked,
01:51like 20 or 30, they take it.
01:54According to a report,
01:55Kampala's public transportation system is not strong enough.
01:57In addition, the government of Uganda has reduced the threshold of Boda Boda
02:00in order to protect the government.
02:03This has led to a flood of motorcycles,
02:05which has increased the police's difficulty in enforcing the law.
02:07An enterprise business manager who helps people to finance and buy motorcycles
02:11believes that the Boda Boda industry is not the root of the problem.
02:14Those who do not abide by the law are the problem.
02:17Our problem is not the Boda Boda,
02:19our problem is regulation.
02:21And regulation that applies to everyone equally.
02:24Where you have certain category of people
02:27trying to ride above the law,
02:29they drive on the wrong side of the road,
02:31they respect no traffic rules,
02:33they run through traffic lights,
02:34you're going to have a problem.
02:37This manager said that they will strengthen education,
02:40ensure that motorcyclists follow traffic rules,
02:42and become disciplined road users.
