00:00Well, the time I made the decision 25 years ago, well, I risked everything I have to get
00:09to change this farm from the very industrial monocultural operation it was that my dad
00:18put together and that I ran for 20 years.
00:22But when I made the decision to change it, and I did that fairly abruptly, there was
00:27a lot of naivety.
00:28I thought I'd be okay.
00:29We'd always make money, but we didn't.
00:31We lost the money for a while.
00:33It's been a rollercoaster.
00:34I was an early innovator changing the way we produce food in this country.
00:39We were the first farm to sell grass-fed beef to Publix and Whole Foods Market.
00:46We were able to sell all we could produce at a really good margin.
00:51We got a little drunk on success.
00:53We expanded very, very quickly.
00:57So the demand was there.
00:58The demand was great, but there weren't that many people shopping for it.
01:02But those that were shopping for it wanted it, and nobody really had it available.
01:07Did well for a while.
01:08Thought it would last forever, but it didn't.
01:11USDA changed the rule in 2015.
01:15Previously, the animal had to be born, raised, and slaughtered in the United States to be
01:32product of the USA.
01:34And after 2015?
01:35They changed the rule so that if value was added in the United States, it could be product
01:41of the USA.
01:42There are values such as what?
01:44It's pretty vague.
01:45It opened the door so that animals born, raised, and slaughtered in other countries could come
01:51in as product of the USA.
