Transcript
00:00A world-renowned art installation, Borealis, that recreates the magical phenomena of the
00:06Northern Lights, has come to Liverpool for the very first time. Borealis is at the Royal
00:11Albert Dock until Sunday 30th March.
00:14The inspiration comes from me actually interviewing people, trying to find people, trying to find
00:20times in their lives where there's a before and after, when there's a shift in their lives.
00:24And actually speaking with different people that have experienced the real Northern Lights,
00:27something that changed, something deep in them, like they felt a sense of awe, of expansion,
00:34feeling really small but belonging to something bigger than that.
00:37Available to see during the evening from 7pm to 10pm at the iconic Royal Albert Dock.
00:44I'm really glad it's happening here, first time in Liverpool. It's been travelling to
00:48many places around the world. Glad it can finally come here, it's been on my list of
00:52places I really wanted to show it.
00:54Visitors can stroll along the cobbled street and gaze up at the magical phenomena, which
00:59is accompanied by an atmospheric soundtrack by French composer, Guillaume Dubois.
01:04I don't think that many people will have the opportunity to go and see the real one, so
01:08to bring it here in the heart of the city and transforming the space because people
01:12tend to have been here again and again but it implements like a new memory. When they
01:17will come back here they will say, oh I remember, I saw the Northern Lights here.
01:21With nature having the final say on the effects of the artwork depending on the wind variations,
01:25humidity and temperature, the installation is completely unique yet consistently mesmerising,
01:32inviting visitors to slow down and look up together at the incredible illusion.
01:38Borealis combines technology and the elements using beams of light to travel through cloud
01:43particles creating a magical illusion of the Northern Lights.
01:48What is behind my work in general is the idea of creating situations where we come
01:52together beyond our differences and because we are in a time where there's a lot of tension,
01:57it's a, you know, whatever your origins, your political beliefs, it's just a space where
02:02we come and we connect with each other beyond our differences and we share this emotion,
02:06there's a sense of awe, a sense of expansion.
02:09Having exhibited in over 40 cities across the globe, it's even gained a permanent installation
02:14at Singapore's iconic Gardens by the Bay supertrees.
02:17I really invite people to come and to move around, don't stay on one spot.
02:23What I usually like best is to go towards the back.
02:26If you go towards the front, the effect is stronger but wherever you are, this is the
02:30place where you think it is happening but actually, if you move around, you will see
02:34it in different ways and it's changing all the time.
02:36So do move around and once you find the spot, just slow down, be in the space, the voices
02:43go down, the eyes go up and just embrace the experience.
02:47Celebrating the arrival of the longer, brighter days ahead, the event's conclusion coincides
02:53with the start of British summer time.
02:56My goal is really to bring art to the people.
