00:00Jareth loves to perch on me.

00:01Are you asking her to lay an egg?

00:04Luckily, Ryan, my husband, is not threatened by Jareth

00:06because Jareth was definitely making a play for me.

00:12We are Mallory Phillips and Ryan Phillips

00:14and this is Jareth's story for GeoBeats.

00:17Are you checking out the camera?

00:18We heard about him from some friends who had found him

00:21wandering in their backyard eating squirrel food to survive.

00:24They didn't know what to do and so we said,

00:26okay, we'll take him.

00:30People typically want females for their backyard chickens.

00:33Sometimes they end up with an accidental rooster

00:35so they just end up getting dumped somewhere.

00:37He immediately took to me and I would try to beat up my husband

00:40quite a bit when he came over.

00:42One of the things that roosters do when there's a woman

00:44or another chicken that they're trying to impress

00:47is they do these little dances

00:48and so Jareth started doing these dances for me

00:51and then he will suggest places where the chicken will make a nest.

00:56And so he was walking around in the straw and then picked a spot.

01:02It was kicking it up and looking at me

01:03and clearly trying to show me,

01:04hey, this would be a good spot for you to make a nest

01:06and to lay your eggs.

01:06We thought, okay, we need to find some other friends for him.

01:09We introduced him to our female hen.

01:11She had a bad back leg.

01:13She wasn't really able to get around as well.

01:14We introduced them and he was very amorous, adamant,

01:20very, very excited about her.

01:22She was just not having it at all.

01:24Completely rejected him no matter how hard he tried to win her over.

01:27We had another rooster at the time named Billy.

01:29He was very like this tough guy rooster.

01:31And so we thought, well, he's lonely too.

01:32We'll see if they'll be friends.

01:34And then they ended up falling in love unexpectedly.

01:41Living together as a couple,

01:43they got their own coop and were inseparable.

01:45And then unfortunately, Billy ended up becoming ill,

01:48had heart disease.

01:49Jareth never left his side, was very concerned about him,

01:52stayed with him right until the very end.

01:54Until Billy passed away.

01:57He was there by himself.

01:59Mallory would constantly be like, do you think he's lonely?

02:02Do you think he's afraid?

02:03So that's how Ryan agreed that we would bring him inside.

02:05We had him in the living room.

02:06Luckily, we have three pigs that like to sleep inside in the living room too.

02:10So he was able to sleep next to them and feel like he had some companionship.

02:16But in the evening before bed, he would spend time with me.

02:19Uh-oh.

02:20Uh-oh.

02:21It took a long time for Ryan and him to have a better relationship

02:25where Jareth just wouldn't attack him every time he saw him.

02:27Are you a cuddle rooster?

02:34Oh, you are.

02:35As much as I loved having him inside,

02:37I was really happy when he and Sebastian really started to bond and get along.

02:41And so we were able to move him into the coop at night with Sebastian

02:44so that he is no longer lonely.

02:47I definitely find myself missing the days when he would come inside,

02:50but I'm happy that he gets to go out there and be a rooster.
