00:00A trouble-free and thankfully cooler Thursday evening to all.
00:09Yours truly, Sharms Ispina here, eager and glad to bring you PTV News Now.
00:13Now, tops on our stories for tonight.
00:17National Food Authority Administrator Lani Lakson is a bit edgy and growing worried today.
00:22This as a result of mountains of rice sacks piling up in warehouses nationwide.
00:27Due to a slow rice procurement pace with a harvest season that's just begun amidst low demand and new inventory racking up.
00:34The bane of his worry, at least 6.1 million bags or sacks of 50 kilos each sitting idle in storage
00:41and not converting into sales as quickly as the volume of new inventory coming in.
00:46In a radio interview earlier today, he bewailed the sluggish demand and slow pace of grain distribution
00:53to include those under food security emergency measures, which he blamed on getting stuck and snagged in red tape or too much paperwork.
01:01Nevertheless, Lakson assured all the stockpiles are in good condition and far from a state of spoilage.
01:07But should the status quo persist or hold indefinitely, he said he may be left with no option but to auction off what he has.
01:15Right now, total sales have yet to hit a hundred thousand sacks,
01:19even as he and his surrogates try to negotiate deals with cooperatives and local government units for more warehouse or storage space.
01:30And turning to news in foreign shores,
01:32US President Donald Trump's on and off tariff policy has set the wrong signal to the business world and to global trade
01:39with EU, Canada, Mexico all bracing themselves for after April Fool's Day when Trump's tariffs kick in.
01:46With consumer confidence at a two-year record low,
01:49Trump's handpick for the Federal Reserve has sounded off how the damage of tariffs is putting the US straight into the path of recession.
01:58The US White House correspondent Carolyn Persutti has this report.
02:02Tariffs and counter tariffs with no end in sight.
02:06No, I'm not going to bend at all.
02:08As of right now, the US places a tariff on metals imported from the European Union.
02:13The European Union puts a 50% tariff on US whiskey.
02:17US President Donald Trump threatens a 200% tariff on European wine, champagne and spirits.
02:24We've been ripped off for years and we're not going to be ripped off anymore.
02:28The US imposes 25% tariffs on Canadian metals and an April tariff on lumber, dairy products and cars.
02:36Canada levies then withdraws tariffs on electricity exports but keeps tariffs on $21 billion worth of American goods.
02:46We don't need their cars, we don't need their energy, we don't need their lumber.
02:51The US puts a tariff on Mexican foods but exempts certain items included under the North American Free Trade Pact,
02:58signed in President Trump's first term.
03:00A tariff on cars from Mexico is also rescinded.
03:04Mexico says it will respond on Sunday.
03:07And for China, 20% tariffs overall.
03:10Now there'll be a little disruption but it won't be very long.
03:14The unpredictability drives US stocks wild.
03:18Analysts say if it continues, all governments lose.
03:22They think that if they protect their economy, they're going to increase the productivity
03:27and the competitiveness of industries in their own market.
03:32And actually what they're doing is putting them at a disadvantage in terms of price and access to global markets.
03:40The US argues economic pain now will yield great results later.
03:44Treasury Secretary Scott Besant.
03:46The tariffs, we've got strategic industries we've got to have.
03:50We want to protect the American worker but a lot of these trade deals haven't been fair.
03:55The administration is sending a signal that it's not business as usual here.
03:59It's now more exports and less imports.
04:02The next round of tariffs goes into effect April 2nd.
04:06Carolyn Persutti, VOA News, the White House.
04:13At this juncture, let's shift focus to my colleague in PTV's Baguio City studios
