Disney showcases 'Star Wars' droids at Nvidia conference   Real-life droids from the Star Wars franchise stole the spotlight at Nvidia’s annual software developer conference in San Jose, California, on March 19, 2025. Disney showcased two BDX Droids that can walk, dance, and express emotions, and allowed attendees to interact with them at the Nvidia booth on the showroom floor in the San Jose Convention Center. The creatures have appeared in the Star Wars TV show 'The Mandalorian' and in two of the franchise’s video games, 'Fallen Order' and 'Survivor.' 00:00So, I think it's because you see not a mechanical system, you see a believable robotic character.

00:30That emotes, right? So, you know, it can express happiness, it dances, but it can also express

00:38that it's shy at the moment. So, it also can express that it is a bit angry. So, if you come

00:44too close and it needs its space, right, then it can express that it's angry. So, it's these

00:49emotions and just it's sort of a fully complete character that we were able to build, I think,

00:54that touches people in.

01:24So, you know, the technology is so good that you don't see the technology any longer.

01:47And so, that's exactly the goal of the Walt Disney Company, right?

01:54So, what's interesting about these druids is that they learn how to walk with reinforcement

02:14learning. So, we use reinforcement learning that is similar to how we humans learn to walk.

02:20So, we bring these druids into a simulation environment,

02:24and so we have some artist-provided motion. And so, at the beginning, they fall all the time if

02:29they try to take first steps, but then we ask them to imitate artist-provided motion. So,

02:34over time, they know how to walk in a stylized way that is authentic to the character.
