00:00This is not an anti-meat video.
00:04We've all heard the arguments against meat.
00:07And yet in the EU and US, only between 1 and 6% of people don't eat it.
00:12Meat is just too tasty, convenient and ingrained in our culture
00:16for most of us to consider giving it up.
00:19Also, food is personal and nobody likes to be morally lectured.
00:23At the same time, we love animals.
00:25Most of us have pets and believe in animal rights.
00:28Few things make the internet as angry as animal cruelty.
00:31Both are true.
00:33We love meat and we love animals.
00:36Unfortunately, most animals we eat live in truly horrible conditions.
00:40We don't torture them for fun,
00:42but because it makes meat just a little bit more incredibly cheap.
00:46If we all paid just a tad more, we could avoid most animal suffering,
00:50often just for a few pennies per meal.
00:53Disclaimer, farming is complicated.
00:56Many farmers are genuinely trying to give their animals the best life possible,
01:00but they're trapped in a complex system
01:02with extreme market pressure to keep prices low.
01:05No two countries have the same standards,
01:07no two farms are equal and solid data is often scarce.
01:11We've done our best to combine data from different regions
01:14and the prices you pay in the end.
01:17To keep things simple, we're going to classify farming practices
01:20into three broad groups.
01:22Decent, prisons and torture camps.
01:25This is a bit sketchy,
01:27and you've probably seen many more categories in the supermarket,
01:30like organic or grass-fed.
01:32We'll come to that later.
01:34So, fellow omnivores,
01:36what would it cost us to avoid animal torture
01:39and still have our fried chicken?
01:42Chickens.
01:44At any given time, there are about 26 billion chickens alive on Earth,
01:49as many as all other birds combined.
01:51Chickens seem dumb,
01:53but they're social, can communicate, solve problems and feel empathy.
01:58And yet, we keep the vast majority in insane torture.
02:03Let's start with eggs.
02:05Worldwide, about 90% of laying hens live in torture camps,
02:09crammed in extremely tight cages where they can barely move.
02:13They're unable to show any natural chicken behaviour
02:16like nesting, roosting, foraging or pecking at the ground,
02:19so they become extremely frustrated and end up hurting each other badly.
02:24To stop this, many farms clip their beaks.
02:27In the US and Europe, legal bans and consumer initiatives
02:31have improved the situation a lot in the last few years.
02:34But still, more than 50% of hens remain in cages.
02:38The insane thing is that this doesn't even save a lot of money.
02:41Let's say a dozen eggs cost you around 360 euros or dollars,
02:4630 cents per egg.
02:48How much does it cost to free the hens?
02:50The main alternative to cages are barn systems.
02:53Hens are still kept indoors, but have twice as much space and roam freely.
02:58Barns are prisons. Still not amazing, but so much better.
03:02In the EU, barns increase the consumer price by about 2 cents per egg.
03:07The somewhat decent alternative is free range,
03:10where hens are allowed outdoors, often with proper access to vegetation.
03:15In the EU, this increases the price by about 7 cents per egg.
03:19Housing aside, one of the cruelest practices is chick culling.
03:23Male chicks don't lay eggs, so they're killed right after birth,
03:26usually by gassing or grinding.
03:28This is a really widespread practice used for caged, barn and even organic eggs.
03:337 billion baby chickens are killed this way each year.
03:37France and Germany have banned this,
03:39so many breeding eggs here are scanned early and only female birds hatch,
03:44which may have increased costs by only 2 to 5 cents per egg.
03:48So if you pay 85 cents more for a dozen eggs,
03:51you can make a difference between serious chicken torture and pretty decent chicken lives.
03:57And for another 60 cents, you can help end chick culling too.
04:01Chicken meat is a different story.
04:03Most meat chickens today are genetic freaks, bred to reach amazing weights incredibly fast.
04:09Their internal organs are under a huge amount of stress,
04:12and they can't even walk properly because of their weight,
04:15which causes them a lot of pain for much of their lives.
04:18It's hard to give exact numbers here,
04:20but if farmers were to switch to breeds that grow slower and suffer far less,
04:24a serving of chicken breast that you buy at 1.5 dollars
04:27would become 9 cents more expensive in the US.
04:3090% of meat chickens in the EU live in prisons or torture camps.
04:35They're kept indoors in extremely crowded conditions,
04:38with sometimes dozens of birds per square meter,
04:40often in the dark and with poor ventilation.
04:43So what if we moved them all to prisons?
04:46One EU study found that giving them 30% more space,
04:49perches, fresh air and daylight would increase the price by another 13 cents per serving.
04:55Probably less than 5% of meat chickens live free-range in relatively decent conditions.
05:00This meat is actually noticeably more expensive,
05:03double the price of regular chicken.
05:06But chicken is the cheapest meat,
05:08so depending on the cut, you'd pay 35 cents to 1 euro or dollar more
05:13for a serving of chicken that had a decent life.
05:18Pigs are basically dogs.
05:20They're as intelligent, social and playful as our wolf buddies
05:24and make lovable pets.
05:26So pigs really feel how they live
05:28and arguably have it the worst of all animals we eat.
05:31Probably more than 90% of all pigs live in torture camps.
05:35They spend their entire lives indoors,
05:37in extremely crowded spaces,
05:39on concrete floors without straw or bedding.
05:42Since this is far from what they need,
05:44they get frustrated and often fight.
05:47Piglets have their tails docked to stop tailbiting.
05:50Most males are castrated after birth,
05:52so that their meat will taste better,
05:54often without pain relief to save time.
05:56Mothers are kept in crates,
05:58extremely tight metal straitjackets,
06:00where they can't move at all.
06:02This leads to extreme suffering for the mother and for the piglets,
06:05which are held in a barren area,
06:07separated by metal bars,
06:09and taken away at just 3 weeks old.
06:11Imagine treating dogs like that.
06:13First, let's get to the prison level.
06:16Getting rid of crates would raise the cost
06:18of a 2 euro serving of pork by about 20 cents.
06:21Anesthesia for castration costs almost nothing,
06:24around 1 cent per kilogram of meat.
06:27And a study in Denmark found that giving pigs more straw
06:30and bedding material and 30% more space
06:33and other things that are more animal friendly
06:35would increase the price per serving by another 20 cents.
06:38This is still an awful life for an animal this intelligent,
06:41but obviously much better.
06:43For 40 cents more per serving.
06:46Going one level further and giving pigs outdoor access
06:49for at least 40% of their lives,
06:51and 300 to 400% more space indoors
06:54would increase the price per serving by another 80 cents.
06:58Just over 1% of pigs in the EU
07:00live in these or similar conditions.
07:03We can't know if this is really okay
07:05for such a smart and social animal,
07:07but it starts resembling something decent.
07:10And all for about 1.2 dollars or euros more
07:13per serving of pig.
07:17Cows raised for meat have it the best
07:19because they usually spend about 2 thirds
07:21of their lives outdoors,
07:23making their lives pretty good.
07:25If they were in the wild,
07:27it would be basically the same thing, but less safe.
07:29Their lives are far from perfect though,
07:31especially at the end.
07:33The vast majority of cows
07:35spend the last months of their short lives
07:37in finishing feedlots,
07:39either prisons or torture camps
07:41where they are threatened to reach their slaughter weight
07:43as fast as possible.
07:45Probably less than 5% of beef cattle in the US
07:47have lifelong access to outdoor pasture.
07:50And yet, a recent German study
07:52found that it only increases the price of beef
07:54by around 15%.
07:56The life quality of cows
07:58varies widely even within countries and regions,
08:01depending on the available land,
08:03climates and farming traditions.
08:05So it's really impossible
08:07to make more easy and cheap suggestions
08:09to make their lives better.
08:11Dairy cows do have it much worse.
08:14They're often kept indoors for most of the year
08:16and suffer pain, soul ulcers
08:18and lesions from standing on concrete.
08:21But once again, none of these things
08:23seem to be needed to have affordable milk.
08:25In Germany, outdoor pasture
08:27increases the price of the milk
08:29by about 10 cents per liter.
08:31We could go on with many other animals
08:33and farming practices,
08:35but the summary is clear.
08:37For the animals we eat the most,
08:39upgrading their living conditions
08:41from outright torture to somewhat decent
08:43may cost you about 15% more
08:45for beef and milk,
08:4750% for eggs and pork
08:49and 100% for chicken meat.
08:51The meat of the issue.
08:53Opinion part.
08:55Meat has gotten so cheap
08:57that we have to torture animals
08:59to keep the prices insanely low.
09:01This really is all there is to it.
09:03Food in developed countries
09:05is the cheapest it's been in history.
09:07In the US, the largest meat consumer in the world,
09:09an average person spends
09:11$337 a month on food,
09:13$88 on meat, eggs and dairy.
09:15If these became an average
09:17at 50% more expensive,
09:19that would increase the monthly expenditure
09:21on food by about $43.
09:23This may sound like a lot,
09:25but relative to income, this only means
09:27paying as much for food as US consumers
09:29did in 1987.
09:31In Germany, the average person
09:33spends about €70 a month on meat,
09:35eggs and dairy.
09:37If we increased prices by 50%
09:39on average to make the lives of these animals
09:41better in a really meaningful way,
09:43this would rise by about €35
09:45to about €100.
09:47If this still sounds too expensive,
09:49it may be because around 20%
09:51of all meat people buy
09:53is simply thrown away.
09:55Meat got so cheap that we often
09:57don't eat it before it goes bad.
09:59It's no longer valuable.
10:01Okay, so if you go shopping,
10:03what can you do?
10:05It can feel like you can't do anything
10:07as an individual consumer,
10:09but this is not true.
10:11The market follows demand.
10:13If you don't want to buy torture meat,
10:15look at the labels on holding conditions.
10:17If there is none,
10:19it is torture meat for sure.
10:21If there is, well, it's complicated.
10:23It's often unclear what
10:25different labels mean,
10:27if they're strictly enforced or legally binding.
10:29Some are great, others whitewashing.
10:31And we haven't talked about
10:33the most expensive meat so far,
10:35organic meat.
10:37You've probably noticed that many price estimates
10:39we've given here don't quite match
10:41the price estimates in the supermarket.
10:43This is in part because some retailers
10:45consider ethical products luxury goods
10:47and charge an even higher price,
10:49and also because many labels like
10:51organic, natural, ecological,
10:53bio, or the worst of all,
10:55biodynamic, often contain
10:57a lot of extras or pseudosigns
10:59that have nothing to do with animal welfare.
11:01Many, but not all of these labels
11:03include some of the best practices
11:05mentioned before, but not necessarily all.
11:07Organic brands often include,
11:09for lack of a better word,
11:11stupid measures, like
11:13forbidding GMO feed.
11:15As we covered in another video, banning GMOs
11:17doesn't do anything good for you
11:19or the animals. It just makes your food
11:21more expensive and seem more
11:23natural, while you are consuming
11:25unnatural animal breeds,
11:27living a deeply unnatural life.
11:29Unfortunately, the label
11:31situation in many countries is
11:33extremely confusing, often on purpose.
11:35All too often we don't know
11:37what we're really buying, so
11:39grudgingly, if you can afford it
11:41and want at least a high chance of
11:43torture-free meat, go for the label.
11:45If you can afford it, buy organic.
11:47If you can afford it and
11:49have time, research local
11:51farms and get your meat from a place
11:53you've seen yourself.
11:55There's one exception, too good
11:57not to mention. Mussels.
11:59They suck up carbon and
12:01filter water, making coastlines
12:03cleaner. Calling mussels
12:05dumb is giving them too much
12:07credit. With no central nervous
12:09system and probably no thoughts or
12:11pain, they're basically moss.
12:13Really, everyone should
12:15eat more mussels.
12:17Okay, let's wrap up.
12:19You don't need to be vegan to think the current
12:21situation is unacceptable.
12:23The conditions of most animals we eat
12:25are hard to stomach and could
12:27all be avoided if we paid as much for
12:29meat as our parents did. Things
12:31are slowly getting better, at least in
12:33the West. Consumers can push the industry
12:35in the right direction if we bite
12:37the bullet and pay more.
12:39If you can't afford this, maybe eat a bit
12:41less meat. Don't throw meat
12:43away. Maybe avoid the worst
12:45torture meat like pork, at least
12:47sometimes. And push for
12:49legislation that bans the most horrific
12:51practices. We can help
12:53make the lives of billions of animals
12:55dramatically better.
12:57It really is that simple.
13:03You can only advocate
13:05for better policies if you have enough
13:07reliable information. When
13:09financial incentives are prioritized,
13:11facts can be manipulated or even
13:13omitted altogether. In
13:152024, many major fast food
13:17chains backtracked on serving chicken
13:19that's free from antibiotics and do
13:21use it on sick chickens now.
13:23But is this the full story?
13:25To get nuanced perspectives,
13:27we draw on ground news.
13:29We admire them as a long-time sponsor
13:31for their aim to provide a balanced
13:33account and leave the final conclusion
13:35up to you. This is what
13:37we're aiming for as well. Ground
13:39News lets you easily access nearly 100
13:41additional articles published worldwide
13:43on these policy changes.
13:45Let's look closer. Scripps News
13:47cites flu outbreaks in farms across
13:49the US as causing limited supplies
13:51and higher prices. One source
13:53raises concerns that this move could increase
13:55the risk of spreading antibiotic resistance
13:57amongst humans. At the same
13:59time, the Associated Press reports
14:01that Tyson's senior director of
14:03animal welfare noted a plan to use
14:05antibiotics known as ionophores,
14:07which are claimed to have no effect on human
14:09health. You can easily see the different angles
