Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said it was time to “get real” about net zero, insisting it is “impossible” to reach the target by 2050, as she gave a speech in central London. The Tory leader hit out at Reform UK, which she said “don’t have real answers to our country’s challenges, that’s why their energy policy fell apart right after they announced it.”She also criticised Liberal Democrats leader Sir Ed Davey, saying he was energy secretary when Nick Clegg was “dismissing the idea of building new nuclear because it would not come online until 2022”.

00:00Making promises and not delivering is exactly the reason that the political class has lost trust.
00:06The only way that we can regain it is to tell the unvarnished truth.
00:11Net zero by 2050 is impossible.
00:16I don't say that with pleasure.
00:18I want a better future and a better environment for our children.
00:22But we have to get real.
00:24Anyone who has done any serious analysis knows it cannot be achieved
00:29without a significant drop in our living standards, or worse, by bankrupting us.
00:35Responsible leaders don't indulge in fictions which are going to make families poorer
00:40or mortgage their children's future.
00:43Without the rest of the world doing the same,
00:45we are making our country less safe, less secure, and less resilient.
