00:00The reduction of the tariffs on the export of Filipino bananas in Japan is being discussed.

00:05The production of other tropical fruits is also being increased.

00:10Velgastudio of PTV has news for the country.

00:15The Department of Agriculture and Japan has already discussed the reduction of tariffs on the import of Filipino bananas in Japan.

00:23According to the Philippine-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement,

00:26the tariff on bananas is 18% during the winter season and 8% during the summer,

00:32which is higher than in other countries where the tariff on the export of bananas is almost non-existent.

00:39On the other hand, 75% of the market share of the Philippines in Japan comes from bananas.

00:50According to the International Trade Center,

00:52the total exportation quantity of the Philippines has increased in different types of bananas.

00:57The export quantity of bananas in Japan increased by more than 60,000 tons, according to the latest figure in 2023.

01:05It is important that the tariffs imposed by Japan on our export bananas are lowered

01:11so that the price of bananas in Japan is more competitive

01:17and our exporters can export more bananas.

01:24The production of other tropical fruits is also being increased,

01:28including mangoes, pineapples, desiccated coconuts, and avocado.

01:32Aside from the investment attraction, it can also help in food and job security,

01:37especially for banana farmers and workers in Mindanao.
