00:00Morning from Lalande on a day that I'm calling a tale of two kitchens because here at Lalande
00:05everyone is desperately working on getting our kitchen back. Amry and Chris are in there right
00:10now but I'm actually leaving now. I'm heading to Dan's chateau. He's called me over because he
00:15wants to talk about kitchen finishes. It seems a little early for those of you who've been
00:20following Dan on Escape to Rural France. I'm not convinced he's quite at the stage of putting in
00:25the cupboards though knowing him he might beat us to it at the rate he's going. But today isn't
00:30about his cupboards, it's about his kitchen flooring. So let's go and see what he's found.
00:34I hear you need me Dan. Always. You've come to a complete standstill. Yeah we cannot move forward
00:41and the project has come to a complete standstill. Oh these are great. So this is your thing I thought
00:46you could help me with. Yeah dusty floors, dark subterranean corridors. So originally I was
00:55thinking this kind of vibe. I really like that a lot. So like with the little tomettes in between
01:04as a diamond thing like very classic. And I was like well then I was looking at something like
01:10that. The actual tomette but like a different shape. And I don't know so these are the original
01:17tiles from the entranceway. But not using them but like a new version of them.
01:24What were you putting? Yeah of course I do. I'm thinking like that. That's really beautiful.
01:31So that's what I want because they're like blue-ish. I was like oh I wonder if like
01:36it would just brighten the whole thing up you know. Well if I were you I would do tiles in your
01:43entrance hall because that's what there was originally. That sort of tile. And then I would
01:48probably go for something different down here to break it up. And then in your main salons parquet
01:57and wood above. And then things like this in all of your bathrooms. Yeah. You can get amazing ones
02:04with borders. These really gorgeous borders around them. That's like strong enough really
02:09to be down here. I like these when they are with grey. Like the classic black. Yeah but not black.
02:16I would go grey. It's a bit softer. It's a bit lighter. I think it would look pretty amazing.
02:22So not my thing this. If I was going for this in the kitchen I might go for that in the corridors
02:28leading to it. I wouldn't necessarily put the same flooring in the corridor as in the kitchen.
02:33So you feel as if you step into something much bigger tile. Much bigger spot. But I do like it
02:38with the grey. It's nice this as well. It depends um what are your kitchen colours Dan? It depends
02:45what my tile colours are. Right you haven't seen the basement anyway. Look the great thing about
02:50this is all three floors that you're wondering about are beautiful. So whatever you go for it's
02:57going to be a success. Yeah. Yeah I've just got no vision for it. I think you have a lot more
03:03vision than you give yourself credit for because all three choices are gorgeous. Yeah. So you know
03:07what you're doing. Yeah. Just believe in it. What does everyone think? Anyone watching?
03:17One, two or three? This is transformed. Crazy isn't it? But transformed. I didn't
03:25think it could look like this. It's amazing. So he's done every room up to the kitchen now.
03:31Yeah. It's like I don't know. This is so so different. He is superb. Yeah like it's just
03:38so crisp and clean. Never thought never ever thought it was going to be like this. So what
03:43are these rooms going to be? No idea. Okay. I know where the kitchen is and that's it.
03:48But it's like it's like grown as each room's got like done. I'm like oh yeah probably like kitchen
03:53and like some utilities and stuff and then also like it's like seven rooms. Oh yeah you're way
04:00beyond kitchen and laundry room. No idea. You could have an amazing pantry because the thing
04:05is like you're spending all your time doing this bill but after this you'll have time
04:09for one of your first loves which is cooking. Yeah. Amazing chef. Yeah. So just the best
04:15kitchen complex in the world. Will one of them be the wine cellar and cheese and wine tasting
04:21with a little table? A whiskey bar.
04:28All right man cave, chateau, fine. He's redone all these as well.
04:34It's amazing. He's working his way through them. Oh yeah so there's the old one that hasn't done
04:39it yet. Yeah so that's what he picked out and then that's a new one there. Superb. Yeah.
04:45Is that safe above us by the way? Yes.
04:49That's why you got an acrone. He put that up. No because he also worked. No it's because he took
04:54that out. Okay. So he popped it up. See that would be a great wine wine and cheese room because it's
05:00so dark you can't use it for much else. Yeah. The others are surprisingly light. Yeah. Another
05:06dark one there. Could be the pantry, loads of fridges. Yeah so I'm thinking kitchen,
05:12working kitchen. Yeah. And then there's a pantry room just here. Yeah. It's kind of like in my
05:18mind. I mean imagine having to work in your main kitchen. Absolutely dreadful.
05:24Staff. So actually this is going to be blocked up. So this will, it continues all the way up to
05:31the turret. So this is the stairwell like hub I guess. So all the stairs will go from here.
05:39Fabulous. All the way to the top of the turret and then be in a zigzag. So gorgeous. So he's
05:46actually doing these ones out of granite steps and then building the wall the same as that.
05:53So it looks like you're kind of going down into the. Yeah. Medieval-y part of the chateau kind
06:00of vibe. There is one other type of flooring you could think of down here which is those big slabs
06:05of sort of Burgundian stone. You know they're huge. A little bit like the kitchen and back
06:11corridor at La Lande. Yeah I did look at them. They're very traditional for chateaus as well.
06:16Yeah the only problem is they come like as rough stone so they're not,
06:21they're not like tiles all the same. Okay and you've got great floors here so actually you're
06:25lucky. Ease of like laying them rather than all of their leveling everywhere. Well I like the ones
06:31you've got so. Yeah you just finish it up here so that will be blocked up so this would be like
06:35the pantry. Okay this is straight up the kitchen. Is that your kitchen door? This is the kitchen
06:44door so it's like a sliding door. Nice all mod cons. Yeah. And the kitchen. So he's doing this
06:52next week. It's so great. Actually well look you can see what your original tiles were.
07:00So your idea of the big hexagons with the red in between. Yeah very similar yeah. Yeah it's
07:07inspired here. Yeah but it's just bizarre like I was saying to you earlier this room looks now tiny
07:14and you go upstairs and it looks like double the size. It's really weird. Just ceiling height wise.
07:19Yeah I think people underestimate the difference the ceiling height makes. Oh hugely yeah. Massive.
07:25It looks like a different room. So how are you laying out the room? Have you thought about it?
07:29I mean I feel we're a bit ahead of ourselves but you can't plan too soon. You know what's
07:32normally that far away? We're gonna have a little competition. If you get a kitchen before I do
07:38honestly that's it. I can take it from this to the kitchen. Yeah I throw in the towel. Cancel
07:43that YouTube channel. I like the island thing. It's a real chef thing and I think like
07:49there's a real there's a mistake everyone makes like everyone will be shouting at you this as
07:54well this like kitchen triangle thing. Complete it's rubbish. Yeah. Because everyone's like oh
08:00you've got to be able to like touch your fridge and touch but it's like depends how you work in
08:04the kitchen. And how small your kitchen is. Yeah because we're gonna have like the back areas you
08:08do like a Nissan plus kind of vibe so you what am I cooking okay I'll go to the pantry get that get
08:14my pans set up. Yeah. So I think you need like an island space but also because it's going to be
08:19like a hub same as yours it's like how do you create this big kitchen island thing but also
08:25have somewhere where everyone's hanging around it's not like bar stalls. I know I'm not into
08:30bar stalls in the kitchen. I think yours is big enough it's way bigger than the kitchen at La
08:35Lance so you can have the big island and a proper kitchen table. I'm just just putting on wide so
08:42people can see. I think you should actually have the island where you're standing so that as people
08:48come in instead of seeing a corridor with the kitchen on one side and a table on the other
08:56you literally own it just have the island right in the middle you'll be standing there holding
09:00a glass of champagne going welcome Stephanie. Do you want an hors d'oeuvre? Yes thank you I do Daniel.
09:06And that'll be like a pantry straight off of it so yeah yeah there's a lot of space we've got like
09:12a million ideas I'm not like set on anything I want it to be wow. Because you can also have a
09:19bank of lots of utility things along there ovens rotisseries steam ovens so you want it like
09:28no wall cupboards. Well I'm definitely not a fan of like up cupboards I think they're
09:34they're pointless really. Well I think over there you've got a perfect spot for your
09:40kitchen table yeah it's light you can see out into the garden. Here's the basement don't forget
09:45this will all brighten up once the joints are done and the plasterboard's on and it's not like
09:49any different to a normal room the windows are like normal height you know it's like
09:54it'd be cool place straight out in the garden. I think that makes a big difference onto the garden.
09:59Yeah see I'm excited about this. You're gonna get one of those amazing French range cookers right
10:05in the middle of the room. You'll have to see well I'll wait to see what you get and just get
10:12the one. It's what you do with Davey what has Steph ordered? Order me more more more more and bigger.
10:20Yeah he's gonna repurpose all the granite to do big wide steps all the way down. This is your
10:25builder who's doing all that amazing work inside glorious it's going to be gorgeous.
10:30Less so now. You need a bit of imagination. It won't be long in there you know.
10:36It's very loud in here your heating system's very loud. How loud they are. Oh that's why I haven't
10:42got one. It's actually lovely and warm in here it's nice. One of the workshops. What the heck
10:52he's got a mind of his own. How many workshops do you have? Two at the moment. I've not shown you
11:00the wood. You have not shown me the wood. I was hoping you'd show me some. I've got to be careful
11:05how I say that but yeah let's go see your wood Dan. It's gonna be a meme. That is a lot of wood
11:12Daniel. Have a look at my wood. That is wow Anne-Marie would love this room. It's all oak so
11:18that will do like a load of windows and doors and stuff. Superb. Are you going to be making
11:23your own windows and doors? Yeah. All of it? You're doing double glazed windows? Yeah. You?
11:32Me? Yeah well like I'm going to try and get someone in like if they can knock out some of
11:40them like some of the big ones for something having to spend time on that but so far I'm
11:45no luck so. You will throw your hand at everything you are. Yeah it's impressive. Yeah it's really
11:51beautiful wood. Yeah super dry not free. So you're getting there and then once your windows are in
11:58you'll start on the floors or the walls. Yeah so we've got to get the windows at least properly
12:05sealed up even if it's not the permanent windows. We've had a guy chipping off all the old render
12:10so like this is what it's like now. He's chipping it back. We then spray all that, frame it, board it,
12:16panel it, whatever I do. Panel? Do I hear panel? Yeah. Yeah so this is going towards making
12:24originally every room had paneling like this. Oh we took it out now. Well it's in here. Every room
12:30had paneling like that. Very nice. About that high and that was on all the floors. So I mean we'll
12:37see how it goes like but it's such a cost nowadays to produce something like that. We may look at
12:42just like a full paneling of downstairs the entranceway rooms and then just details upstairs
12:49you know so kind of save it all and bring it all down and just make this. I must say if you're
12:55making your own paneling that's going to bring the price down. Yeah we're still in wood, super
13:00expensive. Also you should look out for old paneling that people are taking out of their homes.
13:06No. That's what Amory says to me every time I turn up with more old paneling. It's more work.
13:14Yeah he'll be very happy to hear you say that but the look is incredible when it's finally
13:20done. It can look amazing. Yeah but you know what I'm going to like about this place is
13:26everything being uniform throughout. Not like hotel style you know not like premiering room
13:32every room's the same but like choosing the detail downstairs on the wood and that is throughout
13:37on every single doors. It's not like a hundred mismatched doors and that's been done at that
13:42date. It's like everything will be so... What so some houses are like that? Yeah. No don't
13:51break my illusion. Yeah I think that'll really make it. Can I just point you to
13:56how proper we are now. Eyewash station, first aid station. I am so impressed but I'm a lot more
14:04impressed by this. You've got a whole plan and everything. It starts with rebuild chateau.
14:13You just put a tick next to it. Make you feel better. I always put the things I've done first
14:18and then take them then do the other stuff. Yeah that's that's keeping busy this week.
14:24Stop showing off. Well the sanatorium is also the cafe. Yes. Nice. Latte for Jarvis.
14:33I like the way it's got the... They always get it wrong the name don't they? Got the milk built in.
14:39Excellent. Oh and the milk. I'm gonna have a milker. Always fun treats here Dan. They are
14:46dwindling. I'm glad they're wrapped. This is like the assembling. It's only just come back together
14:53because we ripped everything out to redo the floor and everything. So it's like your Christmas
14:56decorations. Yes this sort of thing Nick and Brian buys for the place. Nice I like that. Oh my.
15:09I did not see him when I came in. You know Philip would pay good money for that. Yeah he can have it
15:15No absolutely not. Oh another sample as well. Oh now this I'm excited about. Okay this is beautiful.
15:22Too fiddly actually about this because we're gonna do parquet in all the rooms and it's like
15:28little bits of wood and it's really fiddly and time-consuming. But you can buy these ready
15:34like ready done. That is so nice. It's a really cool pattern and you're only going to need like
15:4014 of them and then the rooms. And that's a room yeah. Like laying big sections at a time. We've
15:45actually been talking about doing the same thing above the Grand Salon in the two bedrooms we put
15:49back. Putting in a parquet de Versailles. This is a type of parquet de Versailles. Yeah. It's really
15:55nice. You can even see like little wooden pegs. Yeah you can see like the backsides of that.
16:00Yeah yeah okay. And this is French is it? This is I think they call this Val de Loire.
16:08And that's oak. That's all oak yeah. I think there's like a chestnut version and they all
16:14like wear very differently and you know give different effects. That would be really super
16:19cool. It's super cool. I think I'm going to ask you and Billy for the same company and all three
16:23shutters. We should get a job lot. Yeah I thought that was cool. So now you can show me the final
16:33decorating decisions upstairs for the bedrooms and bathrooms. Yeah not quite. I love going up
16:41here now that you've got two railings. It's luxurious. Well there is a drop here now because
16:47I can't have a beam so that kind of balances everything. Yeah it's always fun here. Always.
16:56Oh so this is. You can see here what he's done like taking all the plaster off. Yeah. Right back
17:00to the bed. So this is what the rooms look like with all the plastic on. It's good. It feels so
17:07much cleaner. Yeah. That feels like. You see that? Yeah. I'm filming you. I'm not looking down.
17:17And also your doorways feel really big which makes the whole place feel grander as well.
17:23They all link. That's the weird thing. I don't know what the rooms are exactly used for but every room
17:28you can walk to every room from every room. That's very French. Yeah. There's loads of connecting
17:35doors to all of the ones at La Lente as well. Yeah. So it's like modern day wise it's not really
17:40good at work like that but yeah. At least it'll look right and then you just lock it. Yeah. I think
17:46it's stopped raining enough for me to go and see the view. Oh I love it so much here Dan.
17:54Look at that. I actually really like it in this weather. It's quite snug surprisingly.
18:05Ten floors and you open up this we found this arch underneath. Okay so I won't go over there but
18:11this is great and you found that arch so you can have a bath centred right in the middle of
18:17that. That'll look quite incredibly deco you know.
18:24Thank you. You could get an amazing sort of art deco bath with a huge
18:29tiled area behind it. Yeah I think probably going to keep the bathrooms about where they were but
18:34it makes sense they're off the bedrooms. Some will be communal I don't know exactly.
18:38Okay I'm going up to look at this bit as well.
18:43Get a bit more grim day weather up here. The height is just crazy. Can you stand there to
18:51give people an idea? I literally have to go up the stairs to get both you and the window in.
19:03That's amazing. Yeah two Dan's. I think I've nearly fallen three times so far.
19:11But yeah lovely view.
19:15Look the warmth of the yurt beckoning. Dan's kitchen is going to be amazing so the race for
19:21the kitchens is on. As someone said in my comments my chateau is getting more and more like Dan's
19:27over time and his is getting more and more like mine but I am hoping I will manage to get a
19:32kitchen before him. But as neither of us has a kitchen right now Dan and I decided to come out
19:38for dinner and well cheers we'll commiserate together and it's a race to the kitchen.
19:56you
