The Hour of Joy has been alluded to throughout the entirety of Poppy Playtime. We receive hints in almost every chapter to the bloody event, but today I think I figured it out! I SOLVED The Hour of Joy! Don't believe me? Let me prove it!

00:00The Hour of Joy was an inside job.
00:02You heard me right.
00:04Hobby Playtime's biggest and most consequential event
00:07didn't just happen because the toys wanted to rebel one day,
00:10it all hinged on the help of one employee.
00:13And I know exactly who it was.
00:17Hello internet!
00:18Welcome to Game Theory,
00:20the show that is on this VHS right here.
00:22But to watch it, you'll need to hit that subscribe button.
00:25Yeah, YouTube snuck in in the night and replaced my play button with a subscribe button.
00:29Listen, I don't make the rules.
00:30Let's just go along with their weird plan for now.
00:33I'm sure it won't backfire in any way whatsoever.
00:35Today, we're diving, or should I say falling,
00:38back down the Bunzo bunny rabbit hole that is Hobby Playtime Chapter 4.
00:43Last time, we focused on how this story is going to end,
00:46with us sacrificing ourselves to save everyone,
00:49but in the end, we'll actually save no one.
00:51The prototype would survive and go on to wreak more havoc on the world.
00:56So with that positive outlook,
00:58and the fact we can't really look much further forward than that,
01:01I wanted to instead look behind us,
01:03to the start of the prototype's plan,
01:06the Hour of Joy.
01:07The Hour of Joy is the moment from this franchise,
01:11the moment that separates the lore of Playtime's past
01:14from the games we're physically playing.
01:16And just like last time, thanks to Chapter 4,
01:18we have been given a few very small clarifying details
01:22that tell us exactly how the Hour of Joy came to pass.
01:26Because while the prototype is incredibly clever,
01:28and while the toys are incredibly strong and hungry,
01:32it turns out they couldn't pull off this plan on their own.
01:35They needed help.
01:36They needed someone who would go along with their weird plan,
01:40a plan that would almost certainly backfire on them for doing so.
01:44Huh. Maybe watch your back, theorists.
01:46As I've mentioned, in order to look back
01:48and figure out an earlier part of the franchise,
01:50we need to actually take a closer look
01:52at one of the more recent additions to the series
01:54and work backwards.
01:56Because it's not really an indie horror franchise
01:58if you're not retroactively adding lore
01:59to previous games with new ones.
02:01One of the new VHS tapes in Chapter 4
02:03presents us with an image of a character
02:05we haven't really seen in a good while.
02:07A resource extraction specialist.
02:10These guys were the primary characters we played as
02:12in Mob Entertainment's spin-off multiplayer game,
02:15Project Playtime.
02:16There's the job.
02:17You need to collect toy parts to make a giant toy.
02:20Get that giant toy on the train, then leave.
02:22Sadly, this game has largely been abandoned by Mob
02:25for the last year and a half,
02:26which was a shame because it was a lot of fun to play.
02:29Has anyone made a fan cam edit of Mobby Longlegs'
02:33I Am Your Mother?
02:34But more importantly, it was surprisingly useful
02:37for lore purposes.
02:38The main thing for us was that the toys
02:40were running amok around the factory,
02:42which sounded awfully similar to what happened
02:44after the Hour of Joy,
02:46the big event on August 8th, 1995,
02:48where the toys finally rebelled against Playtime Co
02:51and took over the factory.
02:53You can see the connection, right?
02:54The Hour of Joy happens, the toys take over,
02:56and so Leif Pierre, ever the businessman,
02:59decides to send these resource extraction specialists
03:01into the factory in order to keep
03:03their giant toy-making operations alive,
03:05leaving them to fight off the giant toys that remained.
03:07That is the sequence of events that we believed
03:10for a very long time.
03:11However, this Chapter 4 VHS tape
03:13tells us a slightly different story.
03:16You see, these tapes aren't just different colours.
03:19They also have their own labels to help us identify them.
03:22Things like Break Time, which was the tape
03:24with the security guards being on break
03:26that we talked about in our last video.
03:27Most of them are pretty on-the-nose,
03:29and this resource extraction specialist tape
03:31is no different,
03:32because on it is a label that reads
03:3493 Theatre Incidents.
03:37If that name doesn't ring a bell,
03:38I don't blame you.
03:40We've only recently learnt about it
03:42during the Chapter 4 ARG.
03:44Man, Bob really did just hide all of their lore
03:46in this thing,
03:47hoping people would solve it and pay attention,
03:49rather than putting it somewhere like,
03:50oh, I don't know,
03:51in the actual game?
03:54I don't know what you're smirking at, FNAF.
03:55They learnt this from you.
03:56Who taught you how to do this stuff?
03:58You, alright?
04:00I learned it by watching you.
04:01Anyway, where was I?
04:02Oh yeah, the Theatre Incident.
04:03As the name suggests,
04:04the incident took place in the Playtime Co. Theatre.
04:07From what we could tell,
04:08based on all of the burnt evidence photos we received,
04:11it was a fire that broke out,
04:12and many people died.
04:14When the incident was then investigated
04:16by Playtime Co.'s private investigator,
04:18it was determined that the culprit
04:19was none other than Harley Sawyer.
04:22These two factors made it seem like a separate incident
04:25from the one in Project Playtime.
04:27They did both share the theatre setting,
04:29but the ARG didn't give us any indication
04:31that the experiments were involved
04:33in the Theatre Incident.
04:34It was just Harley Sawyer going insane
04:36and causing a fire.
04:37Now though, we have this tape
04:39that not only confirms
04:40the resource extraction specialists were there
04:42because of the Theatre Incident,
04:44it also confirms that the experiments were loose
04:46during the Theatre Incident,
04:48just like they are loose in the theatre
04:50of Project Playtime.
05:07It just lines up too perfectly.
05:09Project Playtime is the direct result
05:12of the Theatre Incident.
05:13Harley let the monsters out,
05:14they ran rampant across the facility,
05:16killing a bunch of people
05:17and setting the place ablaze,
05:19forcing Leif to create the resource extraction team
05:22in order to get the bigger bodies
05:23locked away once more.
05:25Now this may seem like just a small change
05:28to our understanding of the Poppy Playtime line,
05:30but actually, this one alteration
05:32has massive ripple effects
05:34to other theories we've had over the years.
05:36One example is the identity of the player character.
05:39Thanks to the Orientation Notebook,
05:41I had theorized that its author, P.W.,
05:43a scientist for Playtime Co.,
05:45might be the player character.
05:47They were able to write about the incident
05:49and the extraction specialists.
05:50So if the incident was the Hour of Joy,
05:53that would mean they had to have survived
05:55the Hour of Joy in order to talk about it.
05:58But if the resource extraction team
05:59was formed after the Theatre Incident,
06:02as we are now being shown,
06:03that means P.W. likely suffered
06:06the same fate as their colleagues
06:08and didn't survive the Hour of Joy.
06:10Therefore, they can't be the player character.
06:13Now, there is still a chance
06:14that my theory is proven true down the line.
06:17We know the player didn't show up for work that day
06:19and was likely involved in the experiments
06:21due to the hallucinations in Chapter 3,
06:23focusing on their regrets,
06:24and in Chapter 4,
06:25playing sounds from the lab
06:26at the end of the chapter,
06:27the place the experiments were happening.
06:35But right now we just don't have any evidence
06:37that it was P.W.
06:39rather than just another scientist.
06:41And P.W.'s diary entries
06:42do end the same day as the Hour of Joy,
06:45so I'm not particularly hopeful.
06:47This would also snowball
06:48into the current status of Leith Pierre.
06:50Again, because P.W. was writing
06:52about Leith forming the team,
06:54we thought that meant Leith was alive
06:56after the Hour of Joy.
06:57But as this is now tied to the Theatre Incident,
07:00it's most likely that he too perished
07:02during the Hour of Joy like everyone else.
07:05However, the biggest change
07:07this has to our understanding
07:08about the lore relates to the VHS tapes
07:10that we received not in Poppy Playtime,
07:13but in Project Playtime.
07:15During each phase,
07:15we received a VHS tape
07:17that contained recordings of Harley Sawyer
07:19and his Bigger Bodies initiative.
07:21But at the end of each of them,
07:22the tape suddenly changed
07:24to a text-based message
07:25from a mystery character.
07:27Based on their use of plurals
07:28when referring to themselves,
07:30them saying things like
07:31you made us this way,
07:32and their use of the same telephone
07:34that Ollie used in Chapter 3,
07:35we believed this to be
07:37the prototype talking to us.
07:39Now that we know the Ollie
07:40we've been talking to
07:41is indeed the prototype,
07:42What did you do with Ollie?
07:44I'm right here, Poppy.
07:45This feels all but confirmed.
07:48The thing is,
07:48we've never really been able
07:50to put our finger on
07:51why they're talking to us,
07:52other than to feed us fans more lore.
07:54There are lines like
07:55you must prove yourself,
07:57and we will call you
07:58when the time arrives,
07:59which felt like we were going to be part
08:01of some big master plan,
08:03though that didn't really make a lot of sense
08:05with Project Playtime
08:06being after the Hour of Joy.
08:07But now that we know this game
08:09comes before the Hour of Joy,
08:10and thanks to a special VHS tape
08:12from Chapter 4,
08:13things become much clearer.
08:15How could this happen?
08:17There's fail-safes,
08:18security measures,
08:20they, it's impossible.
08:21Personal agendas have long been
08:23the downfall of this company.
08:25Is it unreasonable to believe
08:27they were conspirators?
08:28This VHS is titled
08:30Warden Office 88-1995,
08:33the same day as the Hour of Joy.
08:35And despite there supposedly being
08:37a bunch of systems in place,
08:39the experiments have managed
08:40to get through them
08:41and commit the Hour of Joy.
08:43That, my friends,
08:44is why the prototype is talking to us
08:46on the VHS tapes of Project Playtime.
08:49After the theater incident,
08:50they are looking for ways to kill everyone,
08:53to cause the Hour of Joy,
08:55but they need help from an employee.
08:57They are asking us to betray our colleagues
09:00and allow the toys to escape
09:02and kill everyone.
09:03Now, to be clear,
09:04I'm not saying that the person
09:06watching the VHS tapes in Project Playtime
09:08is the same character as our player character
09:10in Poppy Playtime.
09:11And that's because of one crucial detail
09:13that we're given in this VHS tape.
09:16But, but without executive access,
09:18how could anyone even get through?
09:19It couldn't just be any old employee
09:21helping the prototype.
09:22It had to be an executive,
09:24someone with access to the OmniHand.
09:27For a while, we felt like our player character
09:29could be one of the executives.
09:31But more recently,
09:32it felt like that was less and less the case.
09:34And then in chapter four,
09:35Harley said this,
09:37I can't say I remember seeing your face before.
09:40Harley knows the executives very well.
09:43That's been clear since the beginning.
09:44So for us not to be recognized,
09:46we cannot be playing as one of the executives
09:49in the main series of games.
09:51But the person from Project Playtime
09:52that's watching the VHS tapes,
09:54the one that is helping the prototype,
09:56likely is.
09:57And the best part,
09:58I know which one it is.
09:59You might be thinking the answer is obvious.
10:01Harley, he's holding a big grudge against Playtime Co.
10:04When I get my hands on you,
10:07you're a dead man.
10:10PW refers to him as one of the executives
10:12in the Orientation Notebook.
10:14And thanks to another VHS,
10:15we know he's been working with the prototype
10:18pretty much since Leith betrayed him
10:20and turned him into a discount FNAF endoskeleton.
10:22Even when this place was fully operational,
10:24we were beating our heads against this.
10:26So of everyone,
10:27he's the one with motive to betray the company.
10:30The thing he lacks though,
10:31is the means of which to do so.
10:34He was an executive before becoming an experiment himself,
10:37but he was turned into an experiment
10:38to take away some of his power.
10:40From now on,
10:41you're here to give the lab boys answers
10:44when they need them
10:45and carry out procedures
10:47when and how we tell you to.
10:49That's it.
10:50In that tape with the warden,
10:51he doesn't currently have access to the OmniHand
10:54and so is using the Hour of Joy
10:56to manipulate the warden
10:57in order to get one for himself.
10:59But if it's not him,
11:00then who is it?
11:01Well, according to the warden,
11:02only four people have the executive access necessary
11:05to pull off something like this.
11:06Leith BS,
11:07Stella Graber,
11:08Eddie Ritterman
11:09and himself.
11:10Quick side note,
11:11but hey,
11:11look, we now know who the fourth slide was
11:14back in chapter two.
11:14With the warden being the fourth executive,
11:16it only makes sense that the fourth slide is his.
11:19So good job mob,
11:21another minor mystery solved.
11:22Although I have a feeling they didn't give us his name
11:25because they realized coming up with the name
11:27using the letters they left on the floor
11:28doesn't really work,
11:30but I digress.
11:31With there being only four potential suspects,
11:33it becomes pretty easy to narrow down
11:35which one is our project playtime accomplice.
11:37It can't be the warden,
11:39as the VHS shows he's pretty scared
11:41and confused by the whole ordeal.
11:42You know,
11:43unless he's just the most incredible liar.
11:45But we've already got plenty of those in this series,
11:47so I don't think mob's going to want to go back
11:49to that well too often,
11:50right mob?
11:51You don't want to go back to that well too often.
11:54It's also unlikely to be Leith Pierre,
11:56as he's all in on the bigger bodies initiative.
11:58He'd have no reason to want it to fail.
12:00He even keeps the doctor alive as a computer,
12:03specifically because he needs him
12:05to keep the project alive.
12:06So Leith is also off the table.
12:08Before chapter four,
12:09we didn't really know a whole lot about Eddie,
12:12but in this chapter,
12:13we finally get to hear from the man himself
12:15and he's fun.
12:16I'm a businessman, Mr. Silver,
12:18and I don't like dead angry.
12:20I get paid to see that things get done.
12:22And this, like everything else,
12:24will get done.
12:26Man, why does the British guy always have to be
12:28so unapologetically evil?
12:30That leaves us with Stella
12:31as our only remaining suspect.
12:34Stella has always been an intriguing character to me.
12:37Much like Rich,
12:38she's one of the few characters
12:39that's been around on these VHS tapes
12:41since chapter one.
12:42Her presence felt so important
12:44that in our very first theory,
12:46we suspected that she might have been
12:48the person turned into Poppy.
12:50We later changed our view on that
12:51due to some other evidence.
12:52And with this new chapter,
12:54it's very clear Poppy is Elliot's daughter.
12:56I wish you were here, Dad.
12:58When you were running this place,
12:59you always knew what to say.
13:01But that left Stella
13:02without any real role to fill.
13:04And yet she is still very present
13:07and being shoved down our throats.
13:09Like she does have an important role
13:11that we just haven't figured out yet.
13:13Maybe this could be it.
13:15Except thanks to another VHS tape in chapter four,
13:18we hear Stella talking to Leith
13:19about being completely on board
13:21with the Bigger Bodies initiative,
13:22just like all the others.
13:24Well, the work itself,
13:25what you've all been able to do,
13:27I mean, it's nothing short of a miracle.
13:30That's a change I want to help make.
13:32And like that, we are out of executives
13:34and Stella's role is once again left unanswered.
13:38Or it would be,
13:39if it weren't for one thing,
13:41the timeline.
13:42In the chapter three ARG,
13:43there was a note about
13:44the Bigger Bodies version of Catnap
13:46being introduced to Playcare.
13:48Stella has written part of that report.
13:50So this takes place after her meeting with Leith
13:53in the chapter four VHS.
13:54And yet, despite saying in the meeting
13:56that this is for the greater good,
13:58her focus is less on Catnap's effectiveness
14:01and more on how the kids were responding.
14:04She states that she actually doesn't want
14:06to use Catnap on the kids
14:07because it will scare them.
14:08And even despite the kids warming to him,
14:10she claims to quote,
14:12still have reservations.
14:14While she said that she was okay
14:16with everything to Leith,
14:17really, she still wants to protect the kids.
14:20In the actual chapter three,
14:21a VHS shows how excited she is
14:24to have one of the children adopted,
14:26only to realize that they are
14:27one of the children being used for an experiment.
14:30Amazing.
14:32You'll be perfect for,
14:34oh, it appears there's been some complications.
14:38The form says testing.
14:40You're in charge of all this.
14:42How could you not know?
14:43I don't.
14:44I'm sorry.
14:45Now, there is a world where this tape happens
14:47just before the one we find in chapter four,
14:49that this incident is the reason
14:51Leith has to tell Stella what's going on.
14:53But listen to that clip again
14:54and pay attention to Stella's delivery.
14:56You're in charge of all this.
14:58How could you not know?
14:59I don't.
15:00I'm sorry.
15:01That I'm sorry is what does it for me.
15:04She spends the conversation saying
15:05she doesn't know what's going on
15:07or what testing means.
15:09But her I'm sorry feels weighty,
15:11knowing even.
15:12She is the head of playcare.
15:14She should know everything that's going on.
15:16And if she didn't,
15:17I don't think she'd be keeping
15:18her composure quite so well.
15:20But she's not panicking
15:21or promising to resolve the issue.
15:23She just sounds crestfallen,
15:25defeated,
15:26like she's had the realization
15:28that it's another kid she couldn't save,
15:30because she does know what testing means.
15:33Then, finally, in the chapter four ARG,
15:35right after the theater incident,
15:37we get one more recording that shows us
15:39that Stella, once again,
15:41still cares for people.
15:42Those poor, poor people.
15:45Did we really have to-
15:45You did what was necessary, Miss Graber.
15:48Of course.
15:49Despite supposedly being on side with Leith,
15:52she continues to question their violent method
15:54and then stutters when trying
15:56to keep her composure.
15:57Because if she doesn't,
15:58she could end up like those poor, poor people.
16:01Word of this doesn't breathe
16:02beyond the factory's wall, I've made sure.
16:05What we're seeing are the cracks
16:07in Stella's armor.
16:08She tried to get on board
16:10to see things as Leith did,
16:11but she could never really justify
16:13Playtime Co.'s actions.
16:15The theater incident showed
16:16that the progress Leith had promised her
16:18wasn't being made.
16:19The kids were still becoming monsters,
16:22but she also knew there was nothing
16:23she could do about it,
16:25making her the perfect candidate
16:27for the Prototype's plan.
16:29After the theater incident,
16:30Stella went back to her office
16:32in the playcare,
16:33and that is when the Prototype
16:35reached out through the tapes.
16:37He asked her to trust him
16:38and sent her his iconic Ollie phone
16:40to feed her more instructions
16:42when the time was right.
16:43In the phase two tape,
16:44the Prototype recognizes
16:46that she wants answers from them
16:47and promises they will come in time.
16:49If Project Playtime hadn't been
16:51unceremoniously abandoned,
16:53I believe we'd have seen those answers.
16:55They would have been the Prototype
16:57telling Stella exactly
16:58what she needed to do
16:59and promising her
17:00what he'd promised everyone else,
17:02that the orphans and the toys
17:04would all go free,
17:06escaping their horrible fate.
17:08All she'd have to do
17:09is use her executive access,
17:11the OmniHand,
17:12to open the way for the Prototype
17:14and all the toys to escape.
17:16And hearing that?
17:16Hearing that there was finally a chance
17:18to save the orphans
17:19without the wrath of Leith or Eddie
17:21coming down on her?
17:22I have no doubt
17:23that she would have accepted that deal.
17:25But as we know oh too well at this point,
17:27all of that was just another one
17:29of the Prototype's lies.
17:31I thought we were gonna leave.
17:33Leave the factory.
17:34Not this.
17:35Prototype says we can't leave.
17:37Not now.
17:37Not ever.
17:38He lied to everyone
17:40about what the Hour of Joy was.
17:42The toys didn't escape.
17:43They killed everyone in the factory,
17:45and the orphans were locked away
17:47inside the Prototype's lab.
17:49Just like Poppy,
17:50just like all the toys,
17:51Stella had the rug pulled out from under her.
17:54She was tricked,
17:55and based on how the Prototype
17:56was more than willing to punish Poppy
17:58when she didn't agree with his motives,
18:00he definitely wouldn't have been above
18:01killing Stella too
18:02once she realized she'd been sold a lie.
18:05That being said,
18:06I'm not totally sure
18:07that's how Stella's story ends.
18:09I'll admit,
18:10this is a little more on the speculative side,
18:12but just like how I've been convinced
18:14Rich is going to be way more important
18:16to the actual games
18:17because he keeps showing up in VHS tapes
18:19in every chapter,
18:20I'm also convinced that Stella
18:22has to be more directly involved with the games
18:25rather than just being an off-screen character.
18:27If we think about it,
18:28she was in charge of playcare.
18:30She cared for the orphans,
18:32not just on an emotional level,
18:33but physically cared for them
18:35inside the facility.
18:36If the Prototype wanted to keep
18:38these orphans alive for all these years,
18:40he might need someone with the skills
18:42and desire to help him do that.
18:44Stella had helped once before.
18:45She'd proven her trustworthiness,
18:47so why not have her continue to help him
18:50while he worked with the Doctor
18:51to find whatever this secret is?
18:54"...I'm still your best shot
18:55at cracking that secret."
18:57And as for Stella,
18:58while she may not have appreciated
18:59being lied to,
19:00she saw what happened to anyone
19:02that opposed the Prototype.
19:03We also know that when push comes to shove,
19:06she will bend the knee,
19:07just like she did with Leith.
19:09I could easily see us
19:10entering the labs in Chapter 5,
19:12but when we find the orphans,
19:13it won't be the Prototype we face.
19:15It'll be Stella,
19:16or whatever it is she's become.
19:19But hey,
19:20that's just a theory.
19:21A Game Theory!
19:23Thanks for watching.
