00:00Mr. President, thank you for being here.
00:12Thank you for coming back to the Business Roundtable.
00:14We're very honored that you have a lot of friends in the audience, a couple that I don't
00:19like particularly much, but for the most part, very good.
00:24We had contracts that expired years ago, but they were continuously being paid, probably
00:32I'll bet you it's $500 billion, perhaps, if you add it up so far, and we're trying to
00:39get to a trillion dollars.
00:40That's a big number.
00:43And he did have an ability to do something that a lot of people didn't think of.
00:46He'd come in with bigger ideas.
00:49He'd say, we want you to cut down the size of your agency by 2%, and we thought that
00:55was good.
00:56He came in, he said, 80%.
00:57I said, what the hell's going on, 80%?
01:01And largely, and we had to do it carefully, and we had some little hiccups, not big hiccups,
01:08but we saved a tremendous amount of money for the future.
01:11This is going into the future.
01:13I think, number two, the tariffs are having a tremendously positive impact.
01:17They will have, and they are having.
01:19We have car companies that are not building in Mexico.
01:22Now they're building in the United States.
01:25Some of them, the plants were already started, and they stopped construction, and now they're
01:28going to build in the United States.
01:30It was very unfair that they'd build in Mexico and sell them across the border with no tax,
01:35no nothing.
01:36They'd take away our jobs.
01:37They'd close up places in Michigan and all over the country, and tariffs are, they don't
01:41want to pay 25% or whatever it may be.
01:44It may go up higher.
01:45It may go up higher.
01:47Look, the higher it goes, the more likely it is they're going to build.
01:50And ultimately, the biggest win is not the tariff.
01:53That's a big win.
01:54That's a lot of money.
01:56But the biggest win is if they move into our country and produce jobs.
01:59That's a bigger win than the tariffs themselves.
