00:05but it's probably not what you expect. According to the National Coalition of STD Directors,
00:10America is in an unprecedented sexually transmitted infection epidemic. The report
00:15comes after recent numbers were released by the CDC, outlining a worrying trend for STIs.
00:21Chlamydia was once again the leader with regards to infections across the board,
00:25with the CDC writing as part of their release quote, yet again more than 2.5 million cases
00:30of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were reported in the United States. Experts pointed
00:35out a concerning trend with syphilis in particular, with the number of cases increasing by around 80%
00:40in just five years. It's particularly troubling as the illness can be passed on to infants in
00:45the womb, with some 3,700 such occurrences in 2022 alone. It's called congenital syphilis,
00:51and the CDC outlines cases have increased by 937% in just one decade. It is treatable,
00:58but if not, it can lead to developmental defects and even death. Their report identified Texas,
01:04Arizona, Florida, and California as having the highest number of infections,
01:08something they say led to 282 stillbirths in 2022 alone.
