00:00New varieties of angel sharks, spiny rock lobsters and green sea turtles contribute to the balance of marine ecosystems.
00:10The Ocean Census has reported over 800 new species, with scientists believing only about 10% of marine life is catalogued,
00:19implying up to 2 million species may be undocumented.
00:25Dr Michelle Taylor stresses the importance of this effort, stating we cannot afford to wait long for discoveries.
00:32Species is that unit that we use to split up life.
00:35It's one of the things that we use to look at all of the biodiversity around us.
00:40So it's foundational in biodiversity assessments and in management, in policy, in conservation.
00:48So that species designation is something very central to all of those different fields.
00:55So this type of initiative where it's dedicatedly focused on discovering, you know,
01:01there's probably only 10% of marine life that's actually been kind of discovered.
01:06So, you know, there's millions of species out there that we as left is undocumented that we don't really have a name for.
01:14So, you know, this initiative is just crucial in pushing that forward.
01:19Ocean Census has scheduled 10 new expeditions throughout the Pacific, Indian and Southern Oceans.
01:25The aim extends beyond mere discovery.
01:28It seeks to use these insights to shape conservation strategies, safeguard the trees ecosystem and enhance our comprehension of ocean life better.
