The major part of the Holy Quran was revealed during the 23 years of Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The revelation took place in two distinct periods:

1. Makkan Period (13 years):
The early revelations were sent in Makkah.
These verses mainly focused on Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), Prophethood, and the Hereafter.
The Surahs revealed in this period are generally short and rhythmic.
2. Madinan Period (10 years):
After the Hijrah (migration) to Madinah, the revelations focused on laws, social conduct, governance, and Islamic jurisprudence (Shariah).
The Surahs from this period are generally longer and more detailed.
The first revelation was sent on Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) in the cave of Hira, and the revelation continued until the last verse in 632 CE.
