ESSENCE on the red carpet of Susan L. Taylor's National CARES Mentoring Movement's 10th Annual For The Love Of Our Children Gala.
Transcript
00:00You know, we have to be the example and the demonstration for our young people in the
00:09world today, because the models and the examples that are being presented to them are not supportive
00:19of who we are as a people.
00:20I don't think that anybody moves his or her life forward without some kind of guidance,
00:24a hand at your back, a person who is trusted, who cares about you, who's going to help you
00:29advance your life.
00:30It's really important that we put that ladder down.
00:34I think there's nothing that has been more consistent and more, in my opinion, effective
00:41than what Susan has done with National CARES.
00:44That's why I'm here every year.
00:45This is the critical work.
00:47This is the time for each of us to own the seats of responsibility and to merit to one
00:51another.
00:52And that's what Susan has been doing.
00:54She's been leading the charge for more than 10 years, since our days at Essence.
00:58And so, she poured into us, and now it's time for us to pour into others.
01:04How important is mentorship to you?
01:06Mentorship is very important.
01:08That's how you inspire.
01:09I wouldn't be where I was if no one mentored me, you know, told me I could do it and believe
01:14in myself, you know.
01:16Mentorship has been the best decision that I've ever made in my life.
01:20I think doing it formally, because I've been doing it all of my life informally.
01:25Actually, Susan was the force behind me going and actually starting my organization.
01:32Yes.
01:33Every single time we step out as a public figure, every time we step out, just sometimes
01:36as a Black woman that is a leader and a boss, you are a role model to someone.
01:40So, I think that we can't take it lightly.
01:43And every single day, we have to know that there's someone possibly that we're inspiring.
01:46I'm so grateful to be here.
01:48Mentorship has been extremely important to me in my own career path, and then also in
01:52the pathway of those that come behind me and those that I want to inspire.
01:55So, I'm grateful to be here.
01:57I'm glad Essence is here.
01:58Yeah!
