00:00It is trade deadline day around the National Hockey League where we see a flurry of moves ahead of 3 p.m. Eastern
00:07That's what NHL's Chris Beeney is here to tell us on the early line on this Friday Chris
00:13We appreciate you take some time
00:14I'm what I sure what I am sure is a busy day for you on
00:18Trade deadline day in what has already been a rather active deadline week around the NHL everybody trying to bolster up the roster
00:25To make that run here to end out the regular season and of course to the Stanley Cup playoffs Chris as always
00:31Thanks for being here on TEL
00:34Yeah, happy Friday guys. It is an exciting time certainly to be I mean a sports fan in general
00:39Everything is always happening in March, but with the NHL trade deadline today at 3 p.m.
00:44We'll be busy over at NHL fantasy
00:46We'll be tracking a lot of these moves and we've seen a lot as you mentioned
00:49You know over the past couple of days and really over the past few weeks
00:52We've seen a handful of trade so it should be really really exciting before here a
00:57Lot leads up to that deadline including earlier this week Chris when you look at the big deal for the Colorado avalanche
01:04Acquiring Brock Nelson from the Islanders. What stands out to you most about that deal with Brock Nelson now heading to the ABS
01:11This is an amazing deal for Colorado. This is something that they really needed down the middle of the ice
01:16Of course, we all know that Nathan McKinnon is a stud but you go back and look at the last time the avalanche won
01:21the Stanley Cup they had a
01:23solid number two in Azzam Qadri and and they lost him through free agency after they
01:28Won the Cup and they've been starving for somebody who could be on that second line and Brock Nelson
01:34This is a nine-time 20 goal scorer nine of his 12 years. He's at the 20 mark
01:3918 plus goals in 11 of his 12 seasons 30 plus over his past three averaging 36 per
01:45Over that span and just since the start of 2021, he's top 25 in goals
01:49so you look at some of the edge stats he brings a lot of speed to an already fast Colorado team with McKinnon and
01:55Kill my car and you got Duran and intrusion back in the lineup as well
01:59It moves Casey middle stat to the third line. So it gives them a lot of balance middle stats a nice player
02:03But he's not a top six player
02:05So it gives Colorado a lot of balance and and moving on from eco rant and that surprised a lot of people
02:10But even the organization said, you know
02:12It's nice to have Nico Ranton and kind of felt like they were a one-line team a lot of you know
02:17Top-heavy guys, but now moving on from Ranton getting marty nature's from Carolina
02:21He's been fantastic alongside Nathan McKinnon also brings a lot of speed to the ABS and now Brock Nelson
02:26So you essentially moving off from eco Ranton and then you fill some holes with those two players as well
02:31So Colorado love this move by them and and there's certainly
02:36Worthy of being you know cup contenders other moves that you see there Jake Wallman another great ad by the Oilers
02:41They've lost six of their past eight. They need help on the blue line
02:44They've allowed the second most goals since the four nations faced off
02:46We know what they have to offer and dry settle and and make David they went to the Stanley Cup final last year lost by
02:52A goal so Jake Wallman is a really terrific ad and just shorts up what they needed and that's some help on the blue line
02:58What we love about obviously being on a trade day here for us Chris is the fact that you know pressure burst pipes here
03:04Do you got to get these deals done by three o'clock if we're looking at major moves that could come down to their?
03:10Expectations give us some looks out there who big superstar names that you're hearing might be on the block and could be moved today
03:16Well, it's funny like Mika ran it again, right Carolina goes all-in
03:20This is a team that has been they haven't been super aggressive over the past few years last year
03:24They acquired Jake Ensel didn't work out
03:26They weren't able to retain him and they lost him then they go out and get a guy like Mika ran in on an expiring
03:31Contract again some reports that they can't you know extend him
03:35So Carolina's thinking listen if we can't extend him
03:38We don't want to lose him for nothing
03:39Let's try to get something so there were some ports last night that he was traded to the Dallas Stars that deal
03:44You know reportedly fell through so we'll keep an eye on on that move moving forward
03:49What Carolina for me? I I think this is a team that should go all-in
03:52You know, maybe be aggressive and grab somebody else but Mika ran and is gonna steal all the headlines if he is traded
03:59He's won a cup
04:00He's one of the best players in the NHL some other players to keep an eye on
04:03You know not to the same kind of level as Mika ran and but Brock Besser right the Canucks are they moved on from JT Miller
04:10They're struggling
04:12to pick up wins
04:13I know they're hanging around in a playoff spot at the moment
04:15But Brock Besser's on the final year of his deal and he's a guy that can help but he can for example, Florida
04:20You know
04:21He would fit in perfectly inside the top six with the Panthers other lesser names like Ryan Donato for the Chicago Blackhawks
04:28Jason Zucker for the Buffalo Sabres. We know that those two teams are selling
04:33I'm not sure what the Penguins are gonna do, you know
04:35They've made a couple moves here and there over the past couple of weeks, but Eric Carlson is still a stud
04:40We saw him, you know
04:41He was fantastic for Sweden the four nations face off and a record Raquel on the Penguins as well
04:45Those are two players that don't they still have term left on their deal
04:49But the Penguins could certainly move off from either one of those guys and they would be really good ads
04:54But all eyes are on Mika ran and guys and you know, if he goes to the Dallas Stars
04:58They're already loaded right now
04:59But if he goes to the Stars, they would be clear-cut favorites in the NHL in my opinion
05:03Yeah, Chris this pretty late the trade deadline in the regular season
05:08So trying to build up that team to make a Stanley Cup run you talked about some teams and some players that might make a move
05:14Let's look at those Stanley Cup odds here in the stretch run of this regular season on
05:19Deadline day or any of these prices for any of these teams going to shift a ton in the next five hours or so
05:28Well, you could maybe look at the Golden Knights as a buying window right now
05:32they picked up Riley Smith who won a cup for them, you know a couple years ago and and Vegas is stacked in the blue line and
05:39They'll probably add I mean they've been adding over the past couple years. It's all they do
05:43They don't care about first-round picks like the Rams right? They don't care at all
05:47Like give me all the assets were win now mode. So that number could move a little bit shorter
05:52I look at the Tampa Bay Lightning. I still think that that's a buying window for them
05:55They picked up Yanni Gord who won a couple cups with them a couple years ago and and all of your York strand as well
06:00They've been one of the hottest teams in the NHL
06:02I don't think they'll do anything else, but I think that's a strong number at 12 to 1
06:05I don't believe that the Stars will move all that much even if they get Miko ran and it could move from 7 to 6
06:11Or 5 in certain spots, but I really like them overall as a squad. I've liked them over the past couple years
06:16They've been to the Western Conference Finals and in the past two seasons and you look at middies mid-november
06:22And since the calendars turned to 2025
06:24They lead the NHL in all categories wins and regulation wins and goals. They have the best penalty kill in the league
06:30They've the best power play in the league over the past six weeks as well. They're loaded up and down their lineup
06:35They've already made a couple moves Mikhail Granlin a couple weeks ago a lot of versatility
06:39he can move up and down the lineup third line first second fourth pill kill penalties free play on the power play and they're
06:44Loaded on the blue line and and Jake Goddard's are solid between the pipe. So they are by far my my fear
06:49I don't even think they need Miko ran and but if they go and get Miko
06:53That'll be everything for them. So I look at that board. I don't think we'll see too much movement
06:57Maybe the Maple Leafs, you know get in on the fun seeing in a Florida and Tampa's made some moves in the Atlantic vision
07:03And that number could move to 15
07:04But I really think a buying window potentially on the Golden Knights and the Lightning at the moment
07:08Pretty compact on the left side of those Stanley Cup odds five teams the five best prices all separated by just a dollar
07:15Chris Meaney joins us to break down the action tonight in the NHL next
07:19Trade deadline day in the NHL and also six games on the ice tonight
07:24We are in the stretch run of the regular season around the National Hockey League
07:27So the NHL's Chris Meaney here for a second consecutive segment on deadline day after the moves are done at 3 p.m
07:34Eastern Time rosters solidified for that chase of the Stanley Cup
07:39So Chris, let's look at those six games tonight in the top team in the National Hockey League at this moment out in the Western
07:47Conference want to pay Jets 90 points the most around the NHL take it on the Devils tonight in New Jersey
07:54Let's start with that top game. How do you break it down?
07:58Yeah, I really like the Jets
07:59I know they played last night, but Conor Hellaback will get the start tonight and I look at this Devils team
08:04And unfortunately, they lost their best player in Jack Hughes for the rest of the season
08:07They're without their best defenseman in Dougie Hamilton who's considered week to week
08:11They return home after you know a lengthy road trip, you know a six-game West Coast road trip
08:17You know typically like to fade these teams their first game at home
08:20They lost in Colorado and Vegas and in Dallas. They've lost four of six
08:25They've only scored, you know, they scored two or fewer rather and in three of those games
08:29So without some of their big boys, especially on the power play
08:32I really like the Jets here and they've just been dominant
08:34I look at Velarde to pick up a point three assists last night nine points in this past eight
08:38He's got 58 points in 63 games. So I think the Jets continue to roll here tonight
08:42Yeah, the Jets who actually lost to the Philadelphia Flyers at home pasted the Philadelphia Flyers last night
08:48So that back-to-back here staying in the tri-state area if we do look at the Washington Capitals the beasts of the east right now
08:54They're a heavy favorite tonight taking on the Detroit Red Wings
08:57But at the same time the questions not so much about will Washington when they're a heavy favorite
09:01Will we get an Ovechkin goal tonight Chris as well along with the W
09:05Mr. Hope so, all right, I think he's got three knows five
09:08He's going at an unbelievable pace like his 18% shooting rate is the highest mark of his career
09:13Like this is the best pace and at his age. It's it's certainly remarkable and the shot attempts
09:18He went there was a two-game stretch guys. We're at 28 shot attempts. That is just absolutely ludicrous
09:23So he's firing the puck you take a look at his shot prop four plus and seven of his past eight games
09:28But I do like the Capitals they went through a little bit of a law is their first three game losing streak
09:33They got back-to-back wins here. Now. They've been a dominant team at home ice
09:36Maybe look to take them in regulation get a little bit of a better number there
09:39And you know I was talking about the the devil's kind of sliding and the Red Wings as well for straight losses six of eight
09:45They've allowed four plus goals and seven of their past nine
09:47They have the worst penalty kill percentage in the league and we know what the Capitals have to offer with Ovechkin on the power play
09:54And Jacob tricker and it's been a nice ad as well
09:56In fact, the devil's historic bad PK or the fifth worst if the season ended today of all time in the NHL
10:02So I do like the Jetson or I'd like the Jets rather and I also like the Capitals and another you know play on that
10:08Board, I really like the Vegas Golden Knights, and I think a team that's struggling
10:12You know the Pittsburgh Penguins you could take a look at at the Golden Knights in the puck line get a little bit of value
10:17There on home ice plus money. They've won six of seven
10:20They've scored 14 goals over the last three and this Penguins team we talked about them in the previous segment
10:26Will they move off of Mary Carlson or Ricardo Raquel?
10:29They have just extremely struggled since the four nations break
10:335.14 goals allowed per game. That's the highest American League by far the second most in the NHL all season long at three point six three
10:40Fifth most shots allowed four plus goals allowed guys and six of their past seven
10:44So we keep the pocket of their net and Vegas's role and look for Jack
10:48I could let it get get a couple points as a prop total
10:51Yeah total for that one in Sin City six and a half tonight between the Golden Knights and the pens Alexander Ovechkin
10:57Six goals in the seven games. He's played since the NHL returned from the four nations faceoff now minus
11:04220 to break the great ones record in Wayne Gretzky to score goal number
11:09895 in his career during a point of this regular season and Chris back to the Stanley Cup odds the caps
11:16most points in the Eastern Conference
11:1888 the Jets most points out west and in the NHL as a whole at 90 and still
11:24Not one of those five best prices 11 to 1 on Washington
11:2815 to 1 on Winnipeg Chris in the final minute of this segment
11:32Do you perhaps have more belief in the Jets or the Capitals than the oddsmakers right now for their postseason outlook?
11:39Yeah, it's crazy. Neither team really getting love starting to just a little bit
11:44I have more faith in Washington because the path I think the path is a little bit clear in the east the West Current Western
11:49Conference is gonna be an absolute bloodbath
11:51But you look at some of the teams there don't really believe in the Carolina Hurricanes with Mikko Randon without Mikko Randon
11:56They you know
11:57They they haven't been able to get it done in the playoffs and Maple Leafs haven't been able to get it done in the playoffs
12:00Look at the two teams, you know in Florida and Tampa Bay. Those are some teams, you know combined
12:04They've been to the Stanley Cup over the last five years
12:06But this Washington team already made the moves in the offseason Logan Thompson having a Vesna
12:11Candidate season pair Luke Dubois picked him up having a great season matchup Jacob trickering among the leaders in the blue line and goals
12:17So I don't think that they'll add you'll probably get the same sort of number
12:21But this is a team that has Stanley Cup experience on the squad. So
12:25Yeah, a pretty clear path in the East. It's very top-heavy
12:28So if you're looking for somebody to back it capitals been strong all year
12:32Chris Meaney, we appreciate the time as always. Thank you. Enjoy deadline day power number three up next
