00:24Fur parents in Quezon Memorial Circle are together this Rabies Awareness Month.
00:31According to the QC Veterinary Department,
00:33Rabies is in the top 4 in the world among countries that are fighting rabies against cats and dogs.
00:40We are now down to 6th in the ranking and hopefully,
00:44we will be out of the top 10 within a few years.
00:48Hopefully, by 2030, there will be no more deaths due to rabies in dogs.
00:56Rabies is a virus that attacks the human brain and is transmitted through the bite of an infected animal.
01:06But it can also spread through the bite of a cat and other types of exposure to the animal's saliva.
01:13Most rabies cases are in people infected with rabies.
01:18But it can also be transmitted to infected cats,
01:21cats, wolves, cows, horses, goats, mules, and donkeys.
01:28According to the DOH, the initial symptoms of rabies in humans can be similar to a seizure.
01:34The bitten part can also be painful or not be able to cry or laugh.
01:39While the condition is getting worse, it can experience confusion,
01:43delirium, extreme nausea, weakening of muscles, or paralyzing the patient.
01:49It also includes fear of water, light, or wind.
01:54It is difficult to cough and sneeze.
01:57According to the WHO, it is usually 7 to 10 days after the initial symptoms.
02:02It can lead to cardiac and respiratory failure.
02:06As of now, there is no sign of rabies when the symptoms appear.
02:11According to the San Lazaro Hospital,
02:13if bitten by a dog or cat,
02:15wash and clean the wound, or calmly use water and soap within 10 to 15 minutes.
02:22Clean and apply povidone iodine or alcohol to the wound.
02:27Do not use garlic, stones, or any traditional medicine.
02:32Consult an animal bite center immediately.
02:35Observe the bitten animal within 10 to 14 days.
02:40Dogs with rabies can die within 1 to 7 days.
02:45100% of rabies patients die.
02:4998% of rabies patients come from dogs or cats that are not vaccinated.
