Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim on their 1-1 UEL last 16 first leg draw with Real Sociedad
Reale Arena, San Sebastian, Spain
Transcript
00:00A good result, all being equal, but could it have been better?
00:09Yeah, it could be better, but it could be worse, because in the last 20 minutes I felt
00:13the team really tired, but until the penalty I felt that the team was in control of the
00:20game. After the goal we were so near the second goal with transitions, you felt in the stadium
00:26they were nervous, but in the end the penalty I think did change a little bit and then when
00:31the momentum changed we got tired more easily. We take the game to Old Trafford and we'll
00:39try to win that.
00:40I know you don't usually talk about referees, but the penalty, have you seen it again, do
00:44you agree?
00:45Yeah, I don't want to talk about that, let's try to win the second game.
00:52Joshua Xherxey was saying that you need to be more clinical and ruthless with your chances,
00:57is that a view that you share?
01:00That is clear, we are creating chances, sometimes you don't see it in the XG because we manage
01:09not to shoot, but the great opportunity is there and you can see it. We have transitions,
01:15we have situations and sometimes we are missing something and that can change, especially
01:20in these kinds of games where you need goals, that can make a difference.
01:26One of those chances was Diogo in the first half not passing to Rasmus, he was very upset
01:30about that. What do you make of that situation? Why would he write back in that area and not
01:35pass to a striker, do you think?
01:37I think it's hard to say, but I just imagine that Diogo doesn't know for sure that Rasmus
01:46has the advantage and he felt that he has a lot of time to think the play. One thing
01:52that I'm sure, they are really anxious to score goals and to win games, so they are
01:59doing all the best and sometimes they want to do the best but they are not deciding the
02:05best way in that position. It was a clear situation, Rasmus did really well, Dalot did
02:12really well, the decision was not the best. The important thing is to move on and not
02:17stay like them, like fighting and let's move on to the next opportunity.
02:33On that Ruben, what did you make of Rasmus' performance? It seemed like, even though he
02:37didn't have a shot or goal, it was an improvement on some of his recent games.
02:41He's trying really hard, he gave everything, he made the runs, we know that Real Sociedad
02:46has a high line and he uses this space to win, to fight. The other thing is he's going
02:52to appear in the right moment, he has to continue to play, not be anxious. In that position
03:00with Diogo, we did a great run, win the position, sometimes the ball comes, sometimes it doesn't,
03:05so he needs to think in the next play, in this case in the next game.
03:12How pleased were you for Joshua Xherxey after what happened to him on Sunday to get the goal?
03:18He deserved it because he's working really well, he's improving in a lot of things in
03:23his game. He deserves this moment and it was really important for us today.
03:31Garnaccio was a key part for you to dominate the game in the second half, why did you change
03:40him after the goal?
03:42I felt he was tired. You see it because we did a lot of transitions in the second half
03:50because sometimes he was late to defend. Sometimes he's in a good position for transition but
03:58I felt that he was tired to recover and to do the same things. So I look at the game
04:03as a whole, not just in transitions.
