00:00Well, we're just getting started that was the message from President Trump in his first address to US Congress since returning to office in
00:07The longest congressional speech by a president in recent history Trump listed what he said were his key accomplishments
00:14They included downsizing federal government
00:17reorientating foreign policy and
00:19tariffs on foreign imports
00:22six weeks ago I
00:24stood beneath the dome of this Capitol and
00:28Proclaimed the dawn of the Golden Age of America
00:33From that moment on it has been nothing but swift and unrelenting action
00:38To usher in the greatest and most successful era in the history of our country
00:44We have accomplished more in 43 days than most administrations
00:49Accomplished in four years or eight years, and we are just getting started
00:54Started
00:56Let's talk to our correspondent Kate Fisher in
00:59Washington and Kate a triumphalist tone from President Trump
01:03But some stark partisan divides on show at that speech
01:13Yeah, it was a picture of two sides of that room one side the Republicans almost in a constant standing ovation
01:21Applauding everything Donald Trump said the other side the Democrats seated
01:26Stony face hands in their laps even some of them holding up
01:31flashcards in a silent protest saying things like false and musk steals
01:36We also had a congressman Al Green from Texas getting out of his seat
01:42Going and heckling President Trump in person pointing his walking stick in his face
01:48Telling him he did not have a mandate to end Medicaid he was removed from the chamber
01:54Which is highly unusual there was usually some state, but a high state of decorum during these speeches
02:03As for the content of the speech it felt almost like a Trump rally more than him laying out policy agenda
02:11he was really
02:13energizing his Republican colleagues and
02:16Talking about negatively about the Democrats he went through what he sees as his achievements things like
02:23Cutting government spending he touted Elon Musk who is there the world's richest man?
02:28He's been in charge of the Department of Government efficiency, which is essentially gutted many federal agencies
02:33he talked a lot about law and order and immigration some of his invited guests were victims of
02:39crimes committed by
02:41Illegal immigrants, and he also talked about his
02:45Territorial ambitions things like trying to take over Greenland he reiterated again that we will acquire
02:52Greenland one way or the other and we strongly support Greenlanders right to determine
02:59Their own future, but if you choose us
03:02We will welcome you into the United States the speech came just after the imposition of tariffs on
03:10Major trading partners just a short time ago the Commerce Secretary
03:15Appearing to suggest a rolling back of some Canadian tariffs might be on the cards
03:27Yes, he did Howard Lucknick just speaking a few minutes ago here in Washington
03:34Suggesting that this is not a trade war, but a drug war
03:38Reiterating that this is about
03:40The passage of fentanyl across the borders and that he spent yesterday on the phone to Canadian
03:47Officials and they are promising to do more to curb that drug trade
03:53But this all comes off the back of the markets responding really badly to the imposition of these tariffs they
03:59plunged yesterday
04:01Howard look Nick saying that he is off to speak to Donald Trump the president now this morning at the White House to discuss this
04:08And that he thinks as a way of meeting Canada in the middle
04:12He said tariffs will still happen, but perhaps there will be relief for some sectors, maybe
04:18Automobiles he said that an announcement on this is likely this afternoon here in Washington
04:24I'll do he's had that meeting with Donald Trump
04:27But we should know that Donald Trump yesterday in his speech at Congress
04:32Did not give any indication that there was going to be tariff relief on Canada or indeed anywhere else
04:38He was quite bombastic about his tariffs and didn't give any indication that there could be a change today
04:45But Howard Lucknick seems to think there will be although he made it clear that those
04:50Reciprocal tariffs wider across the whole of the world would still be going into effect on
04:55April the 2nd there will be no change there Kate will speak to you later. Thank you for that our correspondent Kate Fisher in
05:01Washington
