Peter Mandelson has been slapped down by a defence minister for suggesting Ukraine’s leaders should back Donald Trump’s peace plan and commit to a ceasefire before Russia.Volodymyr Zelensky should give his "unequivocal backing" to the US President’s initiative, the UK ambassador to the US said.Mr Trump's heated summit with Mr Zelensky in the White House last week and overtures to Russia's Vladimir Putin, alongside the possibility of Ukraine being sidelined in peace talks led by the US and the Kremlin, has alarmed European leaders.Following the meeting Lord Mandelson told ABC that Ukraine "should be the first to commit to a ceasefire and defy the Russians to follow".
