Home Office minister Lord Hanson says Sir Keir Starmer will try to convince President Trump that Russia invaded Ukraine – when the British prime minister meets the US leader in Washington on Thursday. The prime minister is also expected to reiterate that Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been democratically elected and that Ukraine must be involved in peace negotiations.

00:00Well, the prime minister has been very clear that the Ukraine conflict is one which was
00:04started by the Russians and one which needs the Ukraine to be at the table in order to
00:09resolve. And the prime minister will be going to Washington later this week to put a measure
00:13to President Trump to ensure that we try and bring the Americans to understand that the
00:18Ukraine is under invasion, the president is a president who's been elected by the people
00:23of Ukraine, and that we will continue to give their support to that independent state in
00:27the face of Russian aggression. The European community feels very strongly, as a European
00:32group of nations, that we want to support Ukraine as a fellow European country. This
00:37war was started by Russia, this war is being continued by Russia, this war can be ended
00:41by a discussion and negotiation, even President Zelensky has said that. And what we should
00:45be doing is looking at how we resolve this conflict, not continue it.
