00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann. One in five people in the UK live with diabetes or
00:06pre-diabetes. Here are some of the warning signs that you should be aware of. Diabetes is a serious
00:13condition where your blood glucose level is too high. This can be because your body does not
00:18produce enough insulin or the insulin that your body does produce is not effective. Diabetes UK
00:25explain that there are two different types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. Type 1 is when your
00:32body does not produce enough insulin. Type 2 is when the insulin that your body produces is not
00:38effective. There's also pre-diabetes. This is when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal
00:44but not high enough to be type 2. Common warning signs and symptoms of diabetes can include needing
00:52to go to the bathroom more often, especially at night, being really thirsty, feeling more tired
00:59than usual, unintentional weight loss, thrush, delayed wound healing and also blurred vision.
01:07Research has shown that lifestyle interventions such as diet, exercise and weight loss can be
01:13effective in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes by 50%. You can find more out about diabetes,
01:21the signs, symptoms and how to access a diagnosis if you suspect you have diabetes at Diabetes UK.
