00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann. Cases of norovirus have been surging this winter.
00:06Here's everything you need to know about the stomach bug and what to do if you catch it.
00:11Norovirus is also known as the winter vomiting bug. It is highly contagious.
00:17Symptoms can come on suddenly as the virus has a 12 to 48 hour incubation period. They can include
00:25vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, a high temperature and a headache.
00:31Norovirus is highly contagious. It is easily spread through close contact with somebody who
00:36has the infection by touching contaminated surfaces or by eating food that has been
00:41prepared by somebody who is infected with norovirus. The best way to protect yourself
00:46from catching norovirus is to wash your hands in warm soapy water. Despite their popularity
00:52during the COVID-19 pandemic, hand sanitizers do not kill norovirus so hand washing is the
00:59go-to method of protection. Because of how infectious it is, the NHS recommend that if
01:05you have norovirus that you stay home, do not go to work or send your children to school for 48
01:11hours after your last symptom. This is because you can still be potentially infectious even after
01:18your symptoms have ended. You can find out more about norovirus, what to do if you catch norovirus
