00:00We're about to drive this Range Rover SVR to the Sahara Desert, the most isolated place
00:07on earth, and also one of the most dangerous.
00:12Look, it says you cannot film anything without permission here.
00:16You're speeding.
00:17Speeding?
00:18Yes.
00:19And it's over 2,000 miles away from home.
00:23The car we're attempting it in, this crash damaged Range Rover SVR.
00:28I bought this SVR from Copark, crash damaged, and we attempted to rebuild the full car in
00:34seven days, but it all went wrong.
00:40Just as we thought we was about to finish the build, the viscous fan blew off the front
00:44of the car, ripping a hole out of the cylinder block, destroying the engine.
00:49So that has toasted the engine.
00:51We still have no idea how this happened, but we know if we want to get to the Sahara Desert,
00:56I'm going to have to fix it.
00:58And to fix it, I'm going to have to start by taking out the engine.
01:10Now if I said taking this engine out was going to be easier, then I'd be lying.
01:16It seems like Land Rover like to use loads of different sized nuts and bolts to hold
01:20everything in, unlike a lot of the German cars that I work on.
01:25But despite that, my plan is to drop the engine with the subframe and the gearbox attached
01:30to it.
01:31To do so, I'm hanging up the brake calipers so they can stay with the car so I don't have
01:35to bleed them afterwards.
01:36But I do have to take the exhaust off so I can access the prop shaft which goes from
01:40the back of the gearbox to the rear differential.
01:43After that, it's just a case of disconnecting everything that's running from the engine
01:48to the car.
01:49And once I've done that, I can start undoing the bolts which hold the gearbox mount to
01:53the chassis.
01:56Now the engine is just held in with a few subframe bolts.
01:59So I can lower the car down and start taking off everything at the top of the car.
02:03Like the aircon lines and the fuel lines which go from the fuel tank at the back of the car
02:08to the engine at the front.
02:09And then the engine ECU.
02:11After that, I can lower the car back down and I've got the axle stands ready.
02:15So when I take out these subframe bolts, the subframe should just rest on the axle stands.
02:20And once I'm 100% confident I've disconnected everything, we can lift the car up and the
02:25engine and gearbox should stay where it is.
02:28Then, I've just got to remove the radiator from the front of the engine.
02:33And with that removed, we should be able to get a better look at the damage.
02:40And there it is.
02:43The hole that has caused all of this.
02:46This is the cylinder block.
02:48It's not a timing cover.
02:49But this is the timing cover that can be removed.
02:51That's the cylinder block.
02:53We have two options.
02:55One option was to re-weld the bracket back onto the cylinder block.
02:59Would you trust it?
03:01I don't know.
03:02It's always going to be on my mind.
03:03And especially when we're about to attempt a crazy journey into the Sahara Desert.
03:07I don't want that on my mind.
03:09And our other option was to just send it and buy a second hand engine.
03:13And that's what we're doing.
03:15We got the engine!
03:20What are you enthusiastic about?
03:25Here is the brand new second hand engine that I picked up off eBay.
03:29For £8,000.
03:31But there was something I noticed which wasn't quite right with it.
03:34So I wanted to do a few checks before we jumped into throwing it into the car.
03:38Right, is that like a little...
03:39That is water.
03:40Yeah, that is water.
03:41Yeah, there's a puddle there, isn't there?
03:42Look at that.
03:43Now we got this off eBay.
03:45And we went to pick it up and the chap said he wants the gearbox back.
03:48So when we split it off.
03:49Now, there's a bunch of things that when this has arrived it's not filled us with confidence.
03:54For example, this engine, this gearbox has definitely not come on this engine as standard.
03:59Because we've seen these clips here.
04:01You can see that clip is supposed to clip into there.
04:04But there's already a clip here.
04:06And this clip here is supposed to go into there.
04:09But there's already a clip in there.
04:11So this is not the original box.
04:13All of these bellhousing bolts are in the wrong place.
04:16And then there was a coil pack missing off it.
04:18Plugs missing off it.
04:19And then we took spark plugs out.
04:21Spark plugs had cracks in.
04:23And the inside of the intake was full of water.
04:26So it really didn't fill us with confidence.
04:28But luckily we have called him.
04:31Because we've only just picked it up.
04:32He's happy to take it back.
04:33So at least we didn't get scammed.
04:35He's apologised because he didn't know himself.
04:39So this one goes back.
04:41We're going to get another one for cheaper.
04:43Which has done a little bit more miles.
04:45So my dad's going to pick that one up.
04:47And hopefully that one looks a bit better.
04:49Let's wait for him to arrive.
04:51A near miss there.
04:53That could have been a complete disaster.
04:55But whilst we wait for my dad to take that engine back.
04:58And go and collect another engine off eBay.
05:00I'm working away at getting the gearbox of my engine.
05:03That way when the new engine arrives.
05:05I should be able to refit that gearbox to the new engine.
05:08There's a bunch of stuff which hold the engine to the gearbox.
05:11Like this drive shaft here.
05:12Along with that I'm also going to be taking the down pipes off the engine as well.
05:16Because they're not included with the new engine that we're buying.
05:19Once we've got all the bell housing bolts loose.
05:21We should be able to slide the gearbox.
05:23Along with the torque converter off our broken engine.
05:26Now we just need to unbolt the engine mounts.
05:28Which should allow us to lift the broken engine up from the subframe.
05:33We've now got it all strapped up.
05:35And we can jack the engine crane into the air.
05:37Which should just leave the subframe lying on the axle stand.
05:43Engine is off the subframe.
05:46And look at that.
05:48One big chunky subframe.
05:50Steering rack.
05:51Front differential.
05:53That goes all the way back into the gearbox.
05:55Oh my days.
05:57All of this we're keeping.
05:59We've now just got to attach our new engine to it.
06:02And here it is.
06:03Look at that.
06:04Woo.
06:06£6,000.
06:07Which I actually think was a pretty good deal.
06:10Providing this engine is all good.
06:12But it does look a lot better than the last one.
06:15This thing is going to go through a lot of stress.
06:18Driving in the heat of the Sahara desert.
06:20So again it's only right we make sure it's perfect.
06:23Before we put it in the car.
06:25We want to be sure that we've got half decent spark plugs in it.
06:28So the ones out of that engine is a low mileage.
06:31So we're going to take these ones out.
06:34Switch them over with that.
06:36Yes we should have bought new ones.
06:38But couldn't get any in time.
06:40And those ones will be good.
06:42I'm sure.
06:44Usually you replace your spark plugs around 60,000 miles.
06:47And the ones in our engine have only done 27,000 miles.
06:51So I can't see any harm in swapping them out of our engine.
06:53And putting them in our new engine.
06:55Just saves that extra bit of cash.
06:57Especially as there's 8 spark plugs.
06:59One for each cylinder.
07:01And as we removed all the ones out of our new engine.
07:04They don't even seem that bad.
07:06Our plugs are going in like new.
07:09I'd never bought a second hand engine off eBay.
07:12And I can understand it's quite a risk.
07:14Because really you're just trusting the seller.
07:16But as this one's come from a genuine breakers yard.
07:18And he gave us the VIN number of the car that it's come off.
07:21Everything seems all legit.
07:23He also mentioned to us that it did come with 30 day warranty as well.
07:26Just for that extra peace of mind.
07:28And with those spark plugs in.
07:30We've lowered the new engine onto our old subframe.
07:33And now it's time for the gearbox.
07:35Next up.
07:37This gigantic gearbox.
07:41Transfer box.
07:43Half shaft.
07:44Which goes to the front differential.
07:46And then the back of this.
07:48Goes to the rear differential.
07:53It's a big thing.
07:54I can see why the queen liked these.
07:56She was a mechanic. Do you know that?
07:58She actually was.
08:00But unfortunately she didn't have a YouTube channel.
08:03But fortunately for you guys I do.
08:05And if you've not subscribed to it already.
08:07This will be your perfect time.
08:09We're really thankful for it.
08:11And as we join our gearbox up.
08:13To our brand new second hand engine.
08:15All of us have got our fingers crossed that this is going to work.
08:19And now that the box is fitted to it.
08:21We can refit the radiator to the front of the engine.
08:24Which sits on that subframe.
08:25And the good thing about this.
08:26We can connect up a lot of it.
08:28Before it's actually in the car.
08:29We're ready for action.
08:31The new power unit.
08:32And what do they call it in F1? The gearbox?
08:34Drivetrain.
08:35And the drivetrain is now on.
08:37This thing is pulling us to the Sahara desert.
08:40We hope.
08:41We're going to lower the Range Rover down.
08:43Over the top of the engine.
08:45Gearbox and subframe.
08:46And then slide in these bolts.
08:48Which hold the subframe to the car.
08:50And once a few bolts are in.
08:51We should be able to lift the car up.
08:53With the engine attached to it.
08:54And start refitting everything else.
08:56Another thing to bear in mind.
08:58We've still never actually driven this car.
09:00Even with the old engine.
09:02So we have no idea.
09:03Whether this car had any other underlying issues.
09:05But I guess that's the risk you take.
09:07When you're buying crash damaged cars.
09:09And now that the car is in the air.
09:10We can bolt up all the subframe bolts.
09:12The prop shaft.
09:13The front bars.
09:14The suspension.
09:15The brake calipers.
09:17And everything else that we detached.
09:19Just to get the engine out.
09:20With all of it done underneath.
09:22The car can come back down.
09:23And me and Liam can attach everything.
09:25In the engine bay.
09:26The fuel lines.
09:27The air filters.
09:28The expansion tank for the coolant.
09:30And it even has fluid for the anti-roll bar.
09:33And last but not least.
09:34Some engine oil.
09:35And we think.
09:36That's just about enough.
09:38To get this thing started.
09:41What's it time for?
09:42It's time to start it.
09:44You excited?
09:45Do you think it's going to go?
09:48Or do you think it's not going to go?
09:49I hope it goes.
09:50But I can't.
09:51I honestly don't know with this car.
09:55I think we've done everything.
09:56We've done everything we could have done.
09:58When it gets to this time of night.
09:59Things get missed.
10:01Fuel lines.
10:02Connected.
10:03One.
10:04Two.
10:05Starter motor.
10:06Line.
10:07I did that.
10:08And the ground cable.
10:09Did that.
10:10Dad did ground cable for the gearbox.
10:12He did that.
10:13ECU.
10:14We did that.
10:15Oil.
10:16We've done that.
10:17Oil filter.
10:18We've done that.
10:19Spark plugs.
10:20We've done the spark plug.
10:21Yeah?
10:22I think we're ready.
10:23We just haven't put coolant in yet.
10:24There's no coolant in.
10:25We need to be putting coolant in when we're happy.
10:28That it starts up.
10:29Yeah?
10:30Are we ready?
10:31The last thing we need to connect.
10:33Is the battery.
10:34And then we're all ready to go.
10:36Anything can happen now.
10:39Absolutely anything.
10:41Range Rover SVR.
10:42Please start.
10:44Ignition on.
10:46Coolant level low.
10:47Coolant level low.
10:49We've just spent all day putting this engine in.
10:51We're going to do it.
10:52And the whole other day.
10:53I'm ready.
10:54Of taking the old one out.
10:56Are you ready?
10:57This has got to work.
10:59I really, really hope this starts.
11:10Turning on.
11:11Turning on.
11:12Turning on.
11:17That does not sound healthy.
11:19What was that?
11:23That sounded like a bottom end didn't it?
11:25Yeah.
11:30One more time.
11:32Unless it just didn't have oil pressure.
11:35That sounded like a bottom end.
11:38We did have that problem with the other one though.
11:40Where it didn't have enough power.
11:41It was running horrible.
11:42No, but that was really bad.
11:45Let's hear it again so we know what it is.
11:46That was really bad.
11:48One more time.
11:59That engine should definitely not sound like that.
12:10Oh my god.
12:11Oh my god.
12:15Oh my god.
12:16That's two engines.
12:17That's two engines.
12:18The first one was soaking.
12:20Three engines because yours blew up.
12:25Oh my god.
12:27It's not even funny but it's funny.
12:29This is such a classic like us.
12:32Like it's one o'clock in the morning.
12:34We've started the car.
12:35And the bottom end's gone.
12:42That engine noise sounds exactly like a bottom end bearing going.
12:45These bearings sit on the bottom of the conrod and go around the crankshaft.
12:50And allow the piston to go up and down smoothly.
12:52And an oil gallery in the crankshaft keeps it all lubricated.
12:56But these bearings run such tight tolerances.
12:58And if any of them become worn you'll get a knocking sound like this.
13:04The conrod having play on the crankshaft.
13:06Which basically causes engine failure.
13:09And one this noisy definitely requires a full engine rebuild.
13:14I can't believe it.
13:15I can't believe that.
13:16There's no way.
13:18Does not a good SVR engine exist?
13:20No I don't think there is.
13:23That's why they all wrote off.
13:24The bottom end's gone on this engine.
13:26It's gone.
13:27We paid six grand and drove to Bristol for this engine.
13:30And the bottom end is gone.
13:32This is not looking good.
13:33When are we leaving for the Sahara Desert?
13:36Next week.
13:37Next week.
13:39Next week.
13:53The next morning we had to break the news to my dad.
13:56But we didn't tell him what had happened.
13:58We just let him start the car up.
14:00And let him figure it out himself.
14:10What do you think?
14:13What do you think of that?
14:16Does that mean we're taking all the bits out of this one and putting them in that one?
14:33The car might have been running before.
14:35But he didn't mention that there was a tap dancer inside the engine.
14:38And with this engine being no good, we had to resort to our plan A.
14:42Fixing the original engine.
14:45But there's only one guy we knew that was capable of doing this.
14:48Bob at the machine shop.
14:50To fix the hole in that engine block, it's going to need some specialist welding.
14:54And that's exactly what Bob's known for.
14:56And in the meantime, my dad's removing the broken engine from the Range Rover again.
15:01We're rebuilding this part that snapped off the engine.
15:03How are we going to do that?
15:05We keep melting down this rod and shoving it on there with the TIG welder.
15:08As you can see, we're building open layers.
15:10Little bit by little bit by little bit.
15:12We're only putting on about a millimetre or two at a time.
15:15We take one of the rods.
15:16We melt the surface with the TIG torch.
15:18And then we dip the rod into the surface.
15:20And back at the unit, my dad's detaching the gearbox from the broken engine.
15:24In hopes that when Bob's finished fixing our engine, we can connect it back to that one.
15:29Now because Bob's welding cast aluminium, it requires some TIG welding.
15:33Which takes a lot of skill.
15:34But Bob actually teaches this.
15:36And you can book him for lessons at the machine shop to learn it.
15:39I definitely need to get in on some.
15:42Yeah.
15:43Once he's filled the hole up in the engine with weld, he's now got to make sure that it's flat and perfect for the bracket to sit onto.
15:50And with a bit of machine work, it seems he's doing pretty well.
15:54We're going to offer this up now to try and find the hole.
15:57So we bolt through there, bolt through there.
15:59And then we can use this hole here to pick up where we should be on this pad.
16:04Yes!
16:05I love that. That's very good.
16:07Next thing we do, get a drill bit that fits perfectly in that hole.
16:10And he's got to drill out a hole in his weld that he's just put on.
16:13So we can insert a bolt which holds the bracket onto the engine.
16:17Not only has he got to drill a hole, he's got to tap a thread in it as well.
16:20Last job we're going to do is put a helicoil in.
16:22It's a replacement thread.
16:24So instead of bolting into the aluminium, you bolt into the steel piece.
16:28He does this because the steel is much stronger than the aluminium.
16:32And then there's way less risk of the thread stripping out of the engine again.
16:36Clever move by Bob, but I never doubted him.
16:39It's nice and snug now.
16:40And look at that. We're hoping that this is stronger and better than OEM.
16:45But there's only one way to find out whether this has worked.
16:48So here it is. Our original engine which exploded itself.
16:54But hopefully Bob has solved it.
17:00Our fate is in Bob's hands right now.
17:02He's welded up now and made it nice and flush where that should be.
17:06That isn't even welded on the old part.
17:09That's a whole new piece that he's actually welded together.
17:13So this hopefully should be good.
17:15But the thing is with engine stuff, you never know until we get it in and start the thing up.
17:20So our job now is to build this engine all back up.
17:23Get that engine off the gearbox.
17:25Put this in and just hope for the best.
17:28But massive, massive thanks to Bob for doing this.
17:31Let's hope this works. Come on.
17:33Before the original engine goes back into the car,
17:36I've got to make sure I put all the ancillaries back on it like the water pump and all the belts and pulleys.
17:41Then I can lift the engine up, refit it back onto the subframe and connect it back up to the gearbox.
17:47We're becoming a master at doing this because we've done it so many times already.
17:52It meets again.
17:54The original engine with the original subframe and the original gearbox.
18:00Now I know you guys don't want to watch me refit a Range Rover engine once more.
18:05So let's get this thing over and done with as fast as possible.
18:09These two didn't get on before, so we're hoping now they will get on.
18:15This viscous fan was the whole reason this engine broke.
18:18It rotates around with the engine to keep it cool.
18:21This time we're making sure it's nicely secured.
18:24Now let's get this thing back in.
18:26Now it's time for the old engine to get back in the car.
18:30Let's hope this works.
18:33We're using the exact same technique as last time.
18:36Lowering the car down onto the engine and subframe and putting in the bolts which hold it to the car.
18:42Lift the car back up again and connect everything up from the bottom and everything from the top as well.
18:47Now we have left the exhaust off just for now because we want to see if this repair works.
18:52And now it's time.
18:55We thought we'd give Hannah the honour of starting it.
18:57As she might bring us a little bit more luck than last time.
19:01Okay that's it, nothing about oil.
19:03Right, come on then.
19:06Do it.
19:10Yeah, go.
19:17That sounds well smooth.
19:23The fan's on.
19:28I think it's working.
19:29I didn't want you to hit your head.
19:32I think it's working, it sounds well smooth.
19:35Yes, it works.
19:39How long for, we don't know.
19:41We're about to find out.
19:48Sounds alright.
19:49Yeah.
19:50Why did you stand back?
19:52I think it sounds okay.
19:54We haven't even drove this car yet.
19:56We've got to drive it across the desert.
19:58We need to put everything all back together now.
20:00There's undertrace to go on, there's bumpers to go in, fluids to go in, coolant to go in.
20:07That sounds dead smooth.
20:09Bob.
20:11That sounds dead smooth.
20:12Bob.
20:16It was fixed.
20:18Now let's finish off everything that we couldn't finish off when we originally bought the car.
20:22The coolant's in, the exhaust is going on.
20:25The carbon mirror cap was missing from the accident.
20:28So I managed to find one on eBay and we can refit that.
20:33It's coming together now.
20:35We're going to change the sunroof whilst there's aircon being put in it.
20:39Because we're going to need the aircon for the desert for sure.
20:42When we picked up the car, there was damage to the roof.
20:44And the pan roof was smashed at the back.
20:47Screensaver had already come and removed that part of the roof.
20:50We had to clean it up and then they could apply the adhesive to fit a new one.
20:54I managed to find a new one off eBay for around £200.
20:57But after refitting the rear glass, we noticed that the actual sunroof was bent.
21:02From whatever hit into it in the accident.
21:05You can see the slight bend in it here.
21:07Luckily for us, the sunroof just unbolts.
21:10Once you lift it up into this position, you can access all four bolts to lift the roof out of place.
21:15And once we've got that out, we should be able to just refit in a second hand one.
21:20Look at that. New tinted sunroof so nobody can see through it when they're in the aircraft.
21:27My dad's lifted me the second hand sunroof that we bought.
21:29We slide that into place, but it's not just the case of bolting it straight in.
21:33It took a lot of aligning up to make sure it sits nice and flush.
21:36New sunroof is in. Check this out.
21:42Done.
21:43Onto the front bumper.
21:44This is really going to make the car look complete.
21:47The body shop have painted it.
21:48We've just got to connect it up.
21:50Plugging in the electrical connectors for the parking sensors and the camera on the front.
21:54Then bolting it down.
21:55And finally, the front grille.
21:57Which has carbon in it.
21:59There's a few final bits to put on the bumper like these arch extensions which are only on the SVR.
22:04And then the carbon fibre engine cover can clip in.
22:07And would you look at that.
22:09Within a matter of minutes, the SVR is looking brand new.
22:15Look at it.
22:16It actually looks really, really good.
22:18Better than I expected.
22:19The blue is next level.
22:21The carbon is next level.
22:22This is the spec SVR.
22:24If you ever wanted one, this is the spec that you wanted.
22:28It's been a journey to get to this point right now.
22:31And it's got it's own personality already.
22:33But I feel like the journey has only just begun.
22:35Because it's been a journey to get to this point.
22:38It's been a journey to get to this point right now.
22:39And it's got it's own personality already.
22:41But I feel like the journey has only just begun.
22:43Because we haven't even started the journey really.
22:47And we've got one more place we need to visit.
22:50Before we get on the road to the Sahara Desert.
22:55Oh my days.
22:56Okay.
22:57Let's get this out of here.
23:05Sounds good back there.
23:06How we looking?
23:07No faults.
23:08Apart from the tyre pressure warning light.
23:10Which will go out once I start driving.
23:13Because I've just inflated the tyres.
23:15Oh my god.
23:16I'm actually nervous to drive this car.
23:18I'm scared of everything.
23:20But I'm sure I'll gain confidence once I get moving.
23:23The SVR was running.
23:25And it was leaving the ramp for the first time since the crash.
23:28This is it.
23:29Does it move?
23:31It moves, yes.
23:34Everything was looking so good.
23:36And this car has already been on a journey itself.
23:38From the moment we picked it up.
23:40It was battered on the front end.
23:42And all the airbags were deployed inside the car.
23:45It's driving.
23:47Come on.
23:48And now it's actually driving out of the unit.
23:51The unit.
23:53This is where the journey starts.
23:55Yeah, I think I'm so.
23:57I don't know what.
23:58I've never drove this yet.
23:59So we don't know what.
24:00We've literally just committed to going straight to the Sahara Desert.
24:04We haven't even tested this out.
24:06Done no miles.
24:08One more place to go.
24:12I've got a feeling I'm really going to like this car.
24:25We've come to Wheel Mania.
24:26Because one, these wheels are dead.
24:29And two, we need good tyres for the desert.
24:33So this should transform the SVR.
24:36Come on, Wheel Mania.
24:40Here we go.
24:41Well, I can't remember going this big.
24:43But we've gone huge with these wheels.
24:45These are massive.
24:52We were just thinking, okay, we're going off-road.
24:55We're going in the sand.
24:57But we're also going to be on the motorway as well.
24:59So we still should have a nice comfort ride.
25:03Yes.
25:04You went for an all-season Michelin.
25:06Yes.
25:07Yeah, these look crazy.
25:08Look at this.
25:09Now we've learned our lesson.
25:11We're going with proper tyres for proper terrain.
25:14All-season Michelins.
25:16285, 40, 23.
25:18So we've still got quite a thick profile on the side.
25:20And these are RAF alloys.
25:22Wheel Mania's own alloys.
25:24I've seen these and I thought these look absolutely wicked.
25:26So we've got to go for them.
25:28They're massive.
25:29They're literally massive.
25:31Oh, my God.
25:33I'm scared to see what these look like on the SVR.
25:36But I think the design is absolutely sick.
25:39Right, let's put these on.
25:41We're now saying goodbye to the standard 22-inch alloys
25:44that you get with the Range Rover SVR.
25:46And it looks like somebody's already fitted wheel spaces to this one
25:49to just add a little bit more aggression to the stock wheels.
25:52But with the Wheel Mania alloys, we're not going to need those spaces.
25:55We've gone up a size in wheel.
25:5723-inch with a way more aggressive fitment.
26:00Oh, it looks how it should have looked from factory, doesn't it?
26:05The fitment's solid, isn't it?
26:07No spaces.
26:08At least we've got peace of mind that we've got no wheel spaces on
26:11when we're sending it in the desert.
26:13That looks proper.
26:14The car does need a clean now, but Wheel Mania have smashed it again.
26:17I knew they would.
26:19And then we've got some decent tyres for the sand as well.
26:22This Range Rover is ready for the sand.
26:26If you want to get some wheels, you know where to come.
26:28Wheel Mania, I don't need to say it over and over again.
26:30You already know.
26:32Because look at that.
26:34Right.
26:36To the sun.
26:37We hope it's going to be sun, eh?
26:38I hope it is.
26:40To the sun.
26:50We were landing in Almeria, in Spain.
26:57And the road trip would start from here.
27:00The SVR had been shipped here,
27:02and we'd have to travel on a ferry with the car into Morocco.
27:07The shipping company wouldn't take the car directly to Morocco
27:10due to loads of complications at the borders.
27:13Guys, the car has made it.
27:15Has it made it?
27:16The car has made it.
27:18We hope so.
27:20On the trip, it'll be me, Matt, the cameraman, my dad, and Toby, the second cameraman.
27:26But what they didn't realise is that I had a little surprise for them.
27:31Here we are.
27:32The SVR has arrived in the south of Spain.
27:35Almeria.
27:36We've just got to get it off the trailer now.
27:39And hopefully, we'll make it to the Sahara Desert.
27:43It's a big moment already.
27:45This is the third time we've started the engine since we've fixed it.
27:49Are you excited for the trip?
27:51Yeah, I am.
27:52Are you excited for the trip, Toby?
27:54I'm gassed, mate. This is sick.
27:55This is actually so sick.
27:56Have you ever done a road trip in an SVR before?
27:58No.
27:59No.
28:00Especially one with a welded engine.
28:04Big moment.
28:08It's started.
28:10This is it, then.
28:11The Range Rover SVR being unloaded and touched down in Spain.
28:20And she's off.
28:21And Matt's sweating already.
28:24This one's mine.
28:26Well...
28:28Is that it?
28:29That'll do.
28:30Are we going?
28:31Yeah, let me just get my bag, yeah. We're going.
28:33We're going.
28:35We're in this.
28:36Yeah, yeah.
28:37You're in that.
28:41That's your tooth.
28:44In there is Lee the Land Rover.
28:46Land Rover?
28:47You're in Lee.
28:48No, we're in that.
28:49You're in Lee.
28:51Lee's the Land Rover. I bought him just before this trip.
28:55And you guys are in that.
28:56It's a 2000 Land Rover Defender 90.
29:01150 horsepower. It's straight parts. It's got a remap.
29:04And you two are going to get on like a house on fire in there.
29:08It's amazing.
29:12Say hello to Lee the Land Rover.
29:15My dad and Toby's choice of transport.
29:18Well, it was more my choice.
29:20And they have to deal with it.
29:27Let's hope it's been maintained well.
29:29Insurance and a trade sale just in case you get pulled over.
29:33We had to buy it trade so we've got no warranty unfortunately.
29:37It's done 160... 86,000 miles.
29:44Let me tell you this.
29:45That car there has done 27,000 miles and it broke down about four times and been in an accident.
29:52That car there is 26 years old and it's done 186,000 miles and it's still running.
29:58That's true.
29:59They're reliable cars.
30:01Now ever since from when I can remember, Land Rover have always advertised their cars on being able to do pretty much anything.
30:09And one of those things is driving on sand.
30:12Now the place we're heading to in the Sahara Desert is only accessible via off-road car.
30:17But now we're about to put to the test and hopefully prove that Land Rover does exactly what it's advertised to do.
30:24Regardless of the age.
30:27Time to set off to the Sahara Desert.
30:29Looking forward to it now.
30:34What do you think Toby?
30:35It's like climbing a tree getting in it.
30:38Right, let's do it.
30:40I'm glad we're in this.
30:41This is far more comfortable.
30:43Don't speak too soon.
30:45That's true, yeah.
30:47I don't think they'll give us a lift if we break down actually.
30:49No, definitely not.
30:52Can't wait to stay safe on this trip.
30:56Oh wait, it doesn't clip in.
31:00So now we've just got to complete a short journey from Almeria Airport to the ferry docks down the road.
31:06It's good in here.
31:07Great in here.
31:08So quiet.
31:09Yeah, I mean that sounds really quiet.
31:11At 186,000 miles and that's the only service history we've got.
31:19But boarding the ferry wasn't just going to be as easy as it sounds.
31:22Of course, we were going to run into a problem.
31:25Matt's been pulled over to get searched.
31:28We're getting on the ferry.
31:30I just hope they let him on.
31:32So the guys have got on the ferry and we're just stuck here.
31:36We've been literally pulled over.
31:40SVR's have a bad name anyway, don't they?
31:43They've not told us why they pulled us.
31:45They just said.
31:46They've just told us.
31:47Yeah, and then just shouted at us.
31:48There's no reason.
31:51Stop the car, please.
31:53The document for the car.
31:55Who is the owner of the car?
31:57Me.
31:58You are the owner?
31:59Yeah.
32:00The border control proceeded to check all of our documents
32:03and then go round and check every single VIN number on the car.
32:07That is the insurance.
32:09Or there are the registration.
32:11That's the registration of the car?
32:14Yeah.
32:15It's not a great start.
32:17Little did we know this was going to be stop one
32:20of many police encounters we were going to have on this trip.
32:23It's okay, thank you.
32:25Thank you very much.
32:26Have a good trip.
32:30Okay, that was weird, but let's go.
32:32That was really weird.
32:34Didn't say anything, didn't say why.
32:38Let's go to Morocco.
32:41Matt's been given the all clear.
32:43He's coming on the ferry.
32:44That's a bit of a shame.
32:48All aboard the boat to Morocco.
32:54We all made it onto the ferry.
32:56I don't know if I have.
33:00Let's see what this is like.
33:01Now the ferry is a 10 hour trip
33:04leaving the coast of Almeria
33:06and heading to the city of Nador.
33:08We managed to get some sleep in our cabin
33:10and the next morning when we woke up
33:12we could see the shore of Morocco.
33:18It's actually quite warm.
33:21The sunrise and the country looked amazing
33:25and our road trip started here
33:27but not without another incident.
33:30Well, we're here.
33:32When you come out of the port
33:34not really a pleasant experience
33:36but there you go.
33:38Everyone's trying to sell you SIM cards.
33:41Tony, what the hell has just happened?
33:43There was a guy literally just sprinting after the car
33:46to sell us a SIM card.
33:47But yeah, Matt and Matt are still getting searched
33:49and we haven't heard anything from them
33:51so who knows what's going on.
33:53Matt's just been taken into an office for having a drone
33:59and now I'm just sat here surrounded by police.
34:03One thing we didn't realise when coming to Morocco
34:06that there's a law against having a drone.
34:08Once again, my car was randomly spot checked
34:12and they found the drone.
34:14So it's been about half an hour
34:17and we're still waiting to see what's happening with Matt.
34:22We're waiting. Matt's been taken away to an interrogation room.
34:27So we've been told.
34:30The thing is, we're laughing about this
34:32but this actually could just be serious, couldn't it?
34:35They said you can't have a drone in this country.
34:39I'm guessing it's for military bases
34:41and just coming and flying over.
34:43Yeah, everyone's very serious here.
34:46What is happening?
34:48Tony, what is happening?
34:55Drones left the chat.
34:57That was intense.
34:59That was just terrible.
35:00Just had the latest.
35:02Go on, give us the news.
35:03We're free!
35:05Oh yes!
35:07I was let out after sitting with police for over half an hour.
35:11Now we've just got to find the guys and meet back up.
35:13Oh my God.
35:15The SVR is in a country that we've never been to
35:19and we've only driven this car to Wilmania and back.
35:24This literally, this is scary.
35:27If we break down, we've had it.
35:29We've seen a speck of blue.
35:32Yeah, 10-4, got an eyeball.
35:41I was there for so long.
35:43So, drones got taken.
35:45They were saying, what am I filming?
35:48Why am I here filming?
35:49What am I doing?
35:50Blah, blah, blah.
35:51So they explained.
35:52They said you cannot film anything without permission here.
35:55When we're filming, we've just got to make sure we're like,
35:58just keeping it discreet.
36:00And then they were asking if I was doing journalism or something.
36:03I was like, no, YouTube.
36:04And then he says, where are you going?
36:05And I said, Ilfrane.
36:06He goes, you must be crazy.
36:07And then I was like,
36:10you driving there?
36:11I said, yeah.
36:12And he went, you must be crazy.
36:14He goes, it's open.
36:15Drive.
36:16Okay.
36:17Basically, there's like nothing there, is there?
36:18Yeah, basically, yeah.
36:20I think the trip is just sketchy.
36:22Yeah, I think let's get out of here
36:24and try and find somewhere that feels a little bit more safe.
36:29So, not a great start.
36:31But regardless, we continued our journey,
36:33heading from Nadour to a place called Ilfrane,
36:37which is almost a halfway point.
36:39Now, the country looked beautiful.
36:41But for us, it was a bit of a culture shock.
36:50Toby was right.
36:51It was hard not to stand out in a bright blue SVR.
36:55Joe went Top Gear and everything,
36:56do all these trips, or like the Grand Tour.
36:58They have runners,
36:59so they have like people that go out and do like the research
37:03before the trip,
37:04who actually go out and do the trip first,
37:06so they know where they're going, what to do,
37:08so they don't get in any trouble.
37:10We don't have that,
37:11so we just get thrown in straight away.
37:13And if there is any problems,
37:14we've got to experience it.
37:15And soon, the busy city we were in
37:18merged more into a sandy countryside.
37:22Camels.
37:24Camels.
37:27We love a good camel, don't we, Tony?
37:30And as we were out of the city now,
37:32we found a petrol station,
37:33and we thought this was a good time
37:35just to check over the cars.
37:38Has that just come out of Lee?
37:41Has that just come out of Lee?
37:42That's actually not good at all.
37:44Has that come out of Lee?
37:46Definitely.
37:47Who else could it come out of?
37:49Well, like I say,
37:50the good news is,
37:51at least it's got something in for it to come out of.
37:54How's she looking?
37:55We're just checking the repair.
37:58Oh, yeah.
37:59Dry as anything down there.
38:02Dry as anything.
38:04Yes.
38:05The belly to the beast.
38:07There's not really much difference
38:08between the two, is there, really?
38:10I don't see it.
38:13Hold on.
38:14Why is the bonnet coming off like that?
38:16Oh, the bonnet's come off.
38:19Why's the bonnet come off?
38:23I thought that was falling off you there.
38:25That bonnet's come off.
38:27Our journey continued,
38:29and it got more and more isolated
38:32the further we drove.
38:34How are you doing for noise in there?
38:38What?
38:41It sounds like they're in a tunnel.
38:47The place we're heading to in Ilfrane
38:50is known as being a mini Switzerland in Morocco,
38:53and sometimes even gets snow.
38:56This place is at a much higher altitude
38:58than the rest of Morocco,
38:59so we're expecting the temperatures to drop
39:01and the scenery to change a lot,
39:03and it wasn't long before we arrived
39:05in our first hotel,
39:07in Ilfrane.
39:13Arrival.
39:14It's more quiet, isn't it?
39:15Yeah.
39:16So quiet.
39:17Made it.
39:18At least done it.
39:19Day one.
39:32Being woken up to prayer
39:35was kind of peaceful,
39:38but we were quick to get back on the road
39:41as we had a big drive ahead
39:43into the Sahara Desert.
39:46This is mental.
39:48It does not feel like Morocco, does it?
39:51Right.
39:53Back on the road.
39:54We're going that way.
39:57Do you think Lee's shock absorber's
39:59on its way out?
40:07The scenery continued to amaze us,
40:11but this was the day
40:12where we really started to experience Morocco.
40:17Now we found out
40:18as you travel between each village,
40:20there's a lot of random police spot checks.
40:23Some don't stop you at all.
40:25Some stop you.
40:27Hello.
40:28Very good, thank you.
40:29How are you?
40:30Where are you from?
40:31England.
40:32Ask a few questions
40:35and then let you go on.
40:36Okay, thank you.
40:37Thank you, have a good day.
40:38These spot checks are supposed to be there
40:40to keep the locals safe,
40:41but as we was coming up to one spot check,
40:43both of us ran into a problem.
40:50Hello.
40:51How are you?
40:52I'm good, thank you.
40:53How are you?
40:54Good.
40:55How are you?
40:57Yes.
40:59Where are you from?
41:00England.
41:01Yeah.
41:02Some Englishman is here.
41:03Yeah.
41:06At first,
41:07we thought it was just a regular stop
41:09from a friendly police officer,
41:11but then it changed.
41:13You're speeding.
41:14Speeding?
41:15Seven kilometers.
41:16Yes.
41:23He went on to say I was speeding
41:25and I was actually being so careful
41:27to stay under the speed limit
41:28due to all of these police stops.
41:30I was beginning to think maybe I was
41:32and I just slipped up a bit.
41:34They're saying we were speeding.
41:36And I literally said as well the speed limit
41:39so I knew I was staying to it.
41:41I said it was 60 but it was actually 80.
41:44But then apparently,
41:46now they're questioning these guys
41:48and saying that they were speeding.
41:50But they got the papers already.
41:52He told me to get out of the car
41:54and pay a fine of 300 Durham's
41:56which is around £30.
41:58Cash only.
41:59I had 200 Durham's in my pocket
42:01and he said,
42:02that's enough.
42:03Then we found out
42:04my dad was getting the same fine.
42:10We then were able to move on
42:12leaving my dad and Toby paying their fine.
42:15Something wasn't right.
42:16Pulled up at the petrol station
42:18and we don't know where the lads have gone.
42:22They were still at that checkpoint.
42:23My dad was paying the fine.
42:25We've been sat here for about 5-10 minutes.
42:27Yeah, they were just behind us.
42:29If we drive back through it's so bad, innit?
42:34Where are they?
42:35Now, what do we do?
42:36Do we go back?
42:38Or do we wait?
42:41The village that we just drove through,
42:43a lot of attention was drawn to the SVR.
42:46So I really didn't want to have to drive back through it.
42:49But we had to.
42:50Lads, can you hear us?
42:53OK, yeah, let's go back.
42:55They've been too long.
42:56Yeah, let's go back.
42:57Unless they drove past.
42:59No, we literally could see the petrol station ages ago
43:02and I was looking.
43:04This is probably the sketchiest part we've been through so far.
43:08Definitely.
43:09But shortly after driving back through,
43:12they showed up.
43:14What just happened?
43:16I got away with half the overtaking fine.
43:20Oh, that was your charm and good looks.
43:22That was me and my charm.
43:24But then when he came back to say bye-bye,
43:27the little man here was filming and he saw him filming.
43:32Oh, you got caught.
43:34The last clip I filmed, I was explaining the overtaking.
43:37And then Tony, obviously, we were with the police.
43:39And Tony was with the police and I was filming myself from underneath,
43:43explaining what was going on.
43:45And then after that,
43:48I literally filmed the police for like two seconds.
43:50And he saw me in the corner of his eye and I was like,
43:52saw him coming over, tried to delete it quick.
43:54I was like panicking, I couldn't do it.
43:56Saw me and then literally we've ended up giving him $400.
44:00He took pictures of my passports.
44:02He took pictures of your passports?
44:04What, are you felons now?
44:05Are you felons?
44:07He wrote down all his details.
44:09But you were filming, so why is it Tony?
44:11Yeah, because of the driving licence.
44:13He wrote it all down.
44:15So now it's your fault that Tony's going to prison.
44:17Free on Tony.
44:19He went on Google Translate,
44:21obviously typed in whatever it came up with,
44:23you have bad intentions.
44:25Oh.
44:27It's like a fortune cookie, yeah.
44:33We continued our journey,
44:35as it was only around two hours from the Sahara Desert now,
44:37making sure we was extra cautious of our speed.
44:42We've now done more than 100 miles.
44:46And the sun's still shining.
44:49But then, it happened again.
44:51Here's us entering in an 80km zone.
44:55Shortly after, we were stopped by the police.
44:58Again.
45:01Hello.
45:03Armstrong?
45:05Yeah, that's me.
45:07The speed limit is 60mph.
45:09You have a speed limit of 71mph.
45:11Okay.
45:13How many?
45:15150.
45:17150.
45:19Driving licence.
45:21Wow.
45:23Limit speed.
45:27Now this officer was saying that we was doing
45:2977km an hour
45:31in a 60 zone.
45:33But this time the fine was only 150 dirhams.
45:35Around £15.
45:43Another speeding ticket.
45:45I've been doing the speed limit,
45:47if not under, everywhere he goes.
45:49What did he say speed limit was?
45:5160.
45:53And you were going 77.
45:55He was nice enough to write it.
45:57I wonder where he caught me doing 77.
45:59Like, where?
46:05You win some,
46:07and you lose some.
46:09But we kind of got what was going on here.
46:11Nevertheless,
46:13the Sahara Desert was in sight.
46:15We're almost there.
46:17It is literally inside the Sahara Desert.
46:19And it looks so strange.
46:21It's like mountains,
46:23but with sand.
46:25It's so random because we're in the middle of nowhere.
46:27And there it is.
46:29So I imagine this road is going to turn
46:31less roadie like
46:33when we get in there.
46:35And then we're going to try out sand mode.
46:37And see how both cars get on.
46:39We are so far away from home though.
46:41So, so far.
46:43How surreal is that?
46:45And camels just chilling
46:47by the side of the road.
46:49I've never experienced
46:51anything like it.
46:55Let's do it. Look at this.
46:57Literally got the whole of Sahara Desert
46:59in front of us.
47:03Oh my god.
47:05This is mad.
47:07Is it Kurt Leal
47:09over there?
47:11There you reckon.
47:13This is madness.
47:17We were just at the edge
47:19of the Sahara Desert here.
47:21And it was the first time both cars
47:23had been on the sand.
47:25So we thought this was the perfect opportunity
47:27to see if they do what they're designed to.
47:29We have made it
47:31to the edge of the Sahara Desert
47:33now. This is the start of the test
47:35of these two cars. We've set a course
47:37out around the sand dunes
47:39here and it's timed.
47:41But there's a twist. Our passengers will be
47:43carrying two open bottles
47:45of water and the passenger with the least
47:47water at the end has two seconds
47:49added to their time. You're in the back of Lee
47:51and Matt is in the back
47:53of the SVR.
47:55Let's start this test.
47:57Remember this is two
47:59seconds. Drive smoothly.
48:01Here we go.
48:03Three,
48:05two, one, go.
48:09Good start.
48:11Good start.
48:27Take two.
48:29Come on Lee.
48:31Come on Lee.
48:33Yes.
48:37Go.
48:41Now what I was going to tell you guys was
48:43they were
48:45on the track.
48:47This is literally the first time we've used YFood
48:49for this.
48:51The food has been
48:53so strange here in Morocco
48:55and it was just the best
48:57time for YFood which is a meal replacement
48:59drink and the best thing about it is it's full of
49:01vitamins, minerals, it's high in fibre,
49:03high in protein, lactose free, gluten free
49:05and there's no added sugar and it gives
49:07us literally everything we needed to keep
49:09going on this road trip without stopping off
49:11at some sketchy place we don't know for food.
49:13Come on Tony, he's in the zone.
49:15The good thing as well, because
49:17we've been drinking this literally every single
49:19day since we've been here, there's loads of different flavours
49:21so we haven't got bored.
49:23The camera's all over the place.
49:27Yes, come on.
49:29Across the line
49:31shall we see how much water Toby's got left?
49:33Yeah.
49:35Are you ready?
49:37Oh!
49:39Light work.
49:41Now, time for the SVR.
49:59The water's good, the water's good.
50:01It was doing amazing.
50:03We're going to speed, we're going to speed.
50:17And it looked good whilst doing it.
50:20Oh, he's checking the wide line.
50:27Oh, he's crossed the line!
50:33We definitely have less water.
50:35Yeah, definitely.
50:37Two seconds on there.
50:39I tell you what, it looked faster.
50:41So our wet lap time was
50:4349 seconds.
50:45Is that including
50:47the extra two seconds because you soaked me.
50:49Your time,
50:511 minute
50:5313 seconds.
50:55Oh my god, you're so slow!
50:57I told you, I told you.
50:59Now if you want to grab a YFood, you can grab
51:01a taster pack with the link in the description box
51:03below to find your favourite flavour
51:05whether it be happy banana, chocolate,
51:07coffee, whatever it may be,
51:09you can get that with the link in the description box below
51:11and with the banner appearing underneath
51:13me right now, there'll be a discount
51:15code for the YFood as well.
51:17Let's head on into the desert.
51:27Oh my god.
51:29It's always when you do it
51:31at the last part innit.
51:33We've done everything and we're like, oh let's go.
51:35Got my dad in the car, we just rolled down here
51:37and accelerated and the back end just slid
51:39down here into the never never sand.
51:41Basically the situation is now, we literally
51:43can't get the car out, can we?
51:45And it's going to get dark in two hours.
51:47If you look, the car is just absolutely like...
51:49It's just digging more and more
51:51innit, and even if we get out into that bit
51:53it's going to be stuck there so we're going to have to keep
51:55ploughing.
51:57The SVR was stuck.
52:01And we only had about two hours
52:03of daylight left
52:05and we needed to get back on the road.
52:07If we had any hope in making our destination.
52:09This is not good.
52:13In the end, some of the locals
52:15come out to try and help us get this SVR out.
52:17And thank god they did.
52:23Yes! Go, go, go!
52:27Come on guys!
52:29Yeah!
52:31Keep going, keep going, go down there.
52:33Yeah!
52:37Good work.
52:41The SVR was out, but we still had
52:43a long journey ahead of us.
52:45And we were back on concrete.
52:47But not for long.
52:49What are we doing here?
52:51Surely it's not down there.
52:53It looks like it is.
52:55Here we go.
52:57Our trip across the Sahara Desert
52:59starts now.
53:01It's been practice, but
53:03this is when it gets serious.
53:05This is it.
53:07The true test of the Range Rover.
53:09The true test of our rebuild.
53:11We've made it all the way through Morocco.
53:13This is it's time to shine.
53:15Come on.
53:17This is where it got a little
53:19off road-y.
53:23Oh my god!
53:25How are we going to get out of this?
53:27Oh my god!
53:29We had to test this road first
53:31to see if we could actually get down it.
53:35And Lee managed it.
53:37But it was a dead end,
53:39so they had to come straight back out.
53:41Come on Lee!
53:47How well has Lee done?
53:49And so has the Range Rover to be fair.
53:55This is bumpy already.
53:57And we're just on gravel.
54:03But as we got further into the desert,
54:05it really
54:07started putting these cars to test.
54:11The views were like nothing we've seen before.
54:13It's a Range Rover Sport.
54:15It's got bucket seats in.
54:17So the suspension is quite rigid
54:19when it wants to be, but
54:21what a car it's been.
54:23What a car. Come on.
54:25The Range Rover has caused us
54:27a lot of hassle, but it's worked
54:29when we needed it to.
54:31Right now, we're both in the middle
54:33of the Sahara Desert.
54:35Something we've rebuilt.
54:39Not only does this car look great,
54:41it's performed
54:43really well.
54:45Here we go. We are fully on
54:47sand now. And even though we
54:49were, I felt confident
54:51in this car. And so did my dad
54:53in Lee.
55:07That is where the camp is.
55:09What a journey it's been
55:11across Morocco.
55:13And now we're about to spend the night
55:15in the Sahara Desert. How crazy
55:17is that? In a car that we've just rebuilt.
55:19And Lee,
55:21the Land Rover, has made it as well. The underdog.
55:23Big up Lee.
55:25Big up Lee.
55:27Did you think he'd make it?
55:29Do you love him? Do you think he'd make it? I knew he'd make it. Really?
55:31Yeah, I did. It's an old
55:332000 Land Rover
55:35from my day.
55:37They advertised the Land Rovers
55:39and the Range Rovers to be able to do all of this.
55:41And do you know what? Fair play
55:43to them because it did do all of it.
55:45And the repair held out.
55:47We did good. We changed the engine
55:49multiple times. We did a lot of work.
55:51And we used nearly enough
55:53every single mode. And it was
55:55worth it for that view.
55:59Both cars
56:01made it.
56:15We were so
56:17far into
56:19Morocco and
56:21enjoying the Sahara Desert until the
56:23sun went down. And that's where
56:25we'll be staying tonight.
56:29Oh wow.
56:31Look at the camp.
56:35This is definitely another
56:37well intruder.
56:39Yeah!
56:41Yes, boys!
56:47And although Morocco has been
56:49stressful at times,
56:51what a beautiful country
56:53it turned out to be.
56:55And what an amazing journey
56:57both cars have been on.
56:59But
57:01one of them has to go.
57:09Land Rover
57:11haven't been lying
57:13since 2000
57:15at least. What an adventure
57:17for us and
57:19for the Range Rover.
57:21And the adventure can now continue
57:23with one of you guys because you
57:25can take home the Range Rover
57:27for just £10.
57:29And on top of that, we're also
57:31giving away the Range Rover
57:33for £10.
57:35So if you want to win
57:37and on top of that, we're also
57:39giving away £10,000 cash
57:41to the winner. You can win
57:43the Range Rover SVR
57:45with high speed competitions with the link
57:47in the description box below. The live
57:49draw is next week and one of you
57:51are going to be taking the
57:53Range Rover SVR home. Good luck
57:55to every single one that enters and thank you
57:57so much for watching this video.
57:59We'll see you in the next one. Peace out.
58:07I can truck that
58:09I just can't deny
