London's St. Paul's Cathedral brought to life by immersive light and sound show

Luxmuralis lights up London's iconic St. Paul's Cathedral with an 'immersive' light and sound show: 'Luminous.' 'It's a really beautiful marriage between the building and artwork,' says Peter Walker, Luxmuralis artist. The artwork is bespoke to the Cathedral and opens to the public between Feb, 22 and 28, 2025.

02:00But over roughly a 22 minute central installation within the cathedral, we go from almost the
02:21very beginning of what this place is about, through the old cathedral, which was lost
02:26in the fire, through then the resurrection through Christopher Wren, and gradually then
02:31building towards key moments in time, elements of the archives which are really key to the
02:36building.
02:37So these can be the minutiae of fabrics, which many people won't see, to some of the beauty
02:41of the mosaics, which are above our heads.
02:45And then there's a really poignant section about World War II, and the night raids, and
02:50that's a really moving section, before we have a finale, which is a really jubilant
02:54end and brings us up to date.
02:56And all of that is accompanied by this really beautiful soundtrack that ebbs and flows through
03:01time.
03:02So people actually are physically immersed, you're not just watching and immersed, you
03:06walk through the artwork, and you participate in it by being actually in the light and in
03:12the sound.
03:14I think St Paul's is a vibrant living building anyway, daily, but I think having art in any
03:18place like this allows discourse about contemporary life, about contemporary art to be played
03:23out with people, and I think that's really important, why installations like this, and
03:28why Dean and Chapter have invited us to come in and create this artwork, is because they
03:33see the importance of having contemporary art in this building, but contemporary art
03:37that pays tribute to the building and its history, and also in no way affects the building.
03:42So it's a really beautiful marriage between the building and artwork.
03:47I think people know St Paul's, they know the outside of St Paul's, but I don't think many
03:50people really understand or know much about the inside of St Paul's, and we're very much
03:55hoping that this will bring people in.
03:57St Paul's has been an icon for London, it's been at the cultural and spiritual heart of
04:00London and of the nation for many, many years.
04:03We very much hope that this is an opportunity for people to come into St Paul's, learn a
04:07little bit more about us, feel a little bit more deep in the relationship that they have
04:13with us.
