The Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) will hold an engagement session with Proton Holdings Bhd and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd (Geely) to discuss supply chain-related issues.

During the winding-up session of the Royal Address debate for the ministry in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Feb 20), its Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the ministry will review the matter, particularly concerning the electric vehicle assembly hub in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

On Tesla's investment in Malaysia, Tengku Zafrul said the company's decision to establish a factory in the country is still under discussion.

00:00We will work with Proton and Geely.
00:05I have discussed this issue with Proton,
00:11where there is a supply chain that we want to make sure
00:15not only brings goods from China directly to Malaysia,
00:19but this will also affect our vendors.
00:25In terms of economic scale, it may not be able to compete with Chinese companies.
00:32Therefore, at the same time, the incentives mentioned earlier
00:36must ensure that the supply chain must come from our country.
00:41If not, the incentives cannot be given.
00:43So we will re-examine what was said earlier,
00:46especially regarding the EV installation hub in Malaysia,
00:49especially in Tanjung Malim.
00:52The planning seems to be long-term,
00:54and there are many costs that need to be done by Proton and Geely.
01:01At the same time, we will ensure the work in the field of
01:06installation, maintenance, and management
01:09in the first phase of this factory for EVs
01:12to increase the capacity of EVs
01:14involving our vendors,
01:19especially those who are interested in the EV industry.
01:23Minister, Temeluh has spoken about domestic investment.
01:28We would like to respond,
01:30because Temeluh has closed a large paper mill.
01:34So we expect domestic investment,
01:38especially in terms of fish needs,
01:41especially catfish and river fish.
01:44So this is a very important issue.
01:46So I would like to respond to what I said in my last speech.
01:50Okay, I would like to answer about Tesla as well.
01:53Regarding Tesla,
01:55in our discussions with Tesla before this,
01:58it will start with operations in terms of charging and so on.
02:02The opening of the mill is still under discussion.
02:05There are several other countries in Southeast Asia
02:08that would like to invite Tesla.
02:11But at this time,
02:13when we discussed with Tesla,
02:15in terms of competition,
02:19I can't say it,
02:23but there are other cars that are quite impressive.
02:27In fact, the number of cars being sold
02:30can't be reached.
02:35Because better and cheaper cars
02:38are said to be better than Tesla.
02:43So Tesla has neglected
02:45and only one mill in Southeast Asia,
02:48in China.
02:49That's the reason.
02:51When we asked what will happen,
02:53we haven't made a decision yet.
02:55But I think they will only do it
02:57if the commercial will get a positive response
03:01from Tesla.
