00:00to strengthen the health service in Dwyfor Meirionnydd.
00:03Y Llywydd – Priorities to provide health services that deliver the best possible outcomes
00:08to the people of Wales, including those in north Wales, we will be guided by the best
00:11and most up-to-date clinical evidence and advice to deliver the high-quality care that
00:15people deserve.
00:16Alun Ffred Jones AM Thank you for that response, First Minister.
00:19You will be aware of the difficulties in Broderson in the Towyn area in south Meirionnydd.
00:25I was very grateful for your visit when you were Cabinet Secretary for Health, and you
00:30visited the hospital some two years ago.
00:33But since your visit two years ago, nothing has changed.
00:37The Towy ward, the hospital, remains closed, and that is because of a shortage of nurses
00:43there and the failure of the health board to secure new nursing staff, despite the Carola
00:48programme and the fact that there are nurses from Carola that came to Dolgellau.
00:53We havenít seen adequate numbers of nurses in Towyn, and the department remains closed,
00:58but there are patients from Broderson and Towyn who continue to be in Ysbyty Bronglais
01:03in Aberystwyth.
01:04There are others in Dolgellau hospital.
01:05So, the demand is there locally, and we need to see action in terms of getting more nurses
01:10here in Wales trained here for our community hospitals.
01:14So, what commitment can you give me today that we will see those nurses being employed
01:20in Towyn?
01:22Thank you very much.
01:23I was very aware that that ward in Towyn hospital was closed, and that more beds are available
01:37now in Dolgellau, and hopefully they will help the situation.
01:44I do know that the health board is very eager to reopen the Towy ward.
01:51The problem is that recruitment.
01:53Itís not like they havenít been trying.
01:54They have been trying to recruit people, and thatís why I think it is important that we
02:00do recruit locally, and the fact that we do have a nursing school now in Ceredigion is
02:07hopefully going to help, but itís going to take them some time to go through the system,
02:10of course.
02:11But also, we are recruiting in areas such as Ceredigion.
02:16Hopefully that will help us to recruit people to help our services.
02:22Itís not an easy situation.
02:25They have been trying very hard to get people to work there, and theyíre very eager to
02:31reopen that ward.
02:32Y Llywydd, Laura Ann Jones.
02:33What is the Welsh Government doing to reduce domestic energy costs?
