The Penang City Council has ordered the closure of a food court in Pulau Tikus for 14 days, starting Feb 19 after an inspection uncovered rat carcasses as well as rat and cockroach droppings.

00:09Enforcement personnel from the council carried out an operation at the premises along Jalan
00:13Gotlib on Wednesday.
00:15They uncovered rat carcasses as well as rat and cockroach droppings and found that the
00:20premises failed to maintain satisfactory hygiene standards.
00:24The council's licensing department assistant health officer, Razali M.B., said rats are
00:29one of the rodents that may cause a disease outbreak.
00:33He said the business operators had been instructed to conduct a major cleanup of the premises
00:39and once it is done, the council will inspect the premises again.
00:43During the inspection, the officers also found one of the rented stalls in a deteriorated
00:49state emitting foul odor.
00:52They recommended remedial measures including pest control, proper installation of oil traps
00:57and replacement of damaged stall roofs.
