Stricter rules for retailers selling knives online, along with tougher penalties for those who break the rules, have been announced by the home secretary. Yvette Cooper announced unveiled a raft of anti-knife crime plans, including making retailers report bulk or suspicious sales to police, and increasing the jail sentence for selling weapons to children or illegal blades such as zombie knives, to two years. The laws will collectively be known as 'Ronan's Law', named after 16-year-old Ronan Kanda who was murdered in Wolverhampton in 2022.

00:00We're introducing Ronan's Law in memory of Ronan Cander because too many young
00:05lives are being lost to knife crime. We know in that case that one of
00:12the killers was able to buy so many different lethal weapons online and
00:17that's why this is a major crackdown on online knife sales in order to take
00:22lethal weapons out of the hands of children. Well we need this new
00:26stronger double age verification checks but also we're consulting on new
00:31registration requirements for online sellers because at the moment there are
00:36more checks on sales of alcohol and cigarettes to children than there are on
00:42knives. That is just wrong. We've got to strengthen this system including having
00:47a new policing unit that can go after the online loopholes, these lethal
00:52loopholes to make sure that children can be safe. Well I think we've seen the
00:57work that Ronan Cander's mum has done and the work that Pooja has done. She
01:01has been the most incredible campaigner for her son Ronan but also for other
01:07children across the country. Over the last eight years we have seen these
01:11rises in knife crime among our children, among our teenagers. We have to have the
01:17stronger action. It's part of this government's commitment and our plan for
01:22change to halve knife crime over the next 10 years but that has to start with
01:26our children.
