00:00Nearly 1,000 vehicles headed for Kota Kinabalu remain stuck at Port Klang after the cargo
00:07ship transporting them caught fire on December 3rd last year, 9.1 nautical miles off Tanjung
00:12Labu, Patu Pahat, forcing it to turn back.
00:15A TikTok video showed some vehicles visibly damaged by the fire and claimed that owners
00:20must pay 60% of their car's value to retrieve them, even if their cars were unaffected.
00:26Unaffected owner Firdaus Yusa said that nearly three months later, the cause of the fire
00:31remains unknown and that the cars are being held due to a general average clause which
00:36requires all cargo owners to share the financial burden of damage at sea.
00:41He said many owners were unaware that maritime insurance was not included in their shipping
00:45costs despite paying up to 2,700 ringgit for transport and are now struggling with
00:50additional costs relying on ride-hailing services for daily commutes.
00:56Firdaus, who recently moved from Kuala Kangsar to Tawau, said many have to borrow cars from
01:01relatives and neighbours as a result.
01:04He also questioned why insurance was not included in the invoice and said the shipping agents
01:09were avoiding responsibility by shifting blame onto the owners for not inquiring.
01:14He has since filed a police report and urged others to do the same.
01:18When contacted by FMT, the agent handling the shipments said the issue should be referred
01:23to the shipping company.
