00:00Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that his country won't take part in the upcoming
00:06talks between the U.S. and Russia.
00:11Washington says Kiev and Brussels will be part of, quote, real peace negotiations as
00:16it looks to ease tensions with Europe.
00:21Germany is heading to early elections in few days time.
00:24Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that his country won't take part in the upcoming
00:39talks between the U.S. and Russia.
00:43The two nations are expected to meet in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, where they will discuss
00:48restoring ties and negotiations on ending the war in Ukraine.
00:53He said his country had not been invited to participate and has made it clear in the
00:57past that he wouldn't accept any negotiations about Ukraine that don't include his country.
01:05It comes after U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin
01:10on the phone last week.
01:12Shortly after the call, Trump had also called Zelensky, where the two reportedly spoke about
01:17opportunities to achieve peace and discuss their readiness to work together.
01:23Trump's call with Putin left European countries shocked.
01:26They had also demanded a role in peace negotiations.
01:31Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who will be attending the talks, said Europeans shouldn't
01:35be invited to the talks.
01:38I don't know what they are going to do at the negotiating table.
01:42If they are going to keep talking about some crazy ideas about freezing the conflict, and
01:53if they are going to keep talking about the continuation of the war, why would they be
02:04invited?
02:06Zelensky traveled to the United Arab Emirates late Sunday and is later expected to travel
02:11to Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
02:13He said these trips were unrelated to the planned U.S.-Russia talks.
02:22Ukraine and Europe worry about being sidelined as Trump remains persistent to go ahead with
02:26direct talks with Russia to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine.
02:31In the coming days, a U.S. delegation led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio will engage
02:36in direct talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia.
02:40The move came as a shock to Europe, who believe they should also be included in any peace
02:44talks as they also serve an important role.
02:48The move has prompted French President Emmanuel Macron to organize an emergency summit in
02:52Paris to discuss Europe's response.
02:56In a bid to ease tensions, Rubio said that Europe and Ukraine will be involved in quote
03:01real peace talks.
03:03He also noted that the Riyadh meeting is an opportunity to gauge the seriousness of Moscow
03:07on pursuing peace.
03:09U.S. President Donald Trump echoed a similar rhetoric on Sunday.
03:13We're moving along, we're trying to get a peace with Russia and Ukraine and we're working
03:18very hard on it.
03:20It's a war that should have never started.
03:24Do you expect Zelensky to be involved in these conversations?
03:27What will his role be?
03:28Yeah, I do.
03:29I do.
03:30He will be involved, yes.
03:33Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Abu Dhabi late on Sunday.
03:38It's not yet clear what's on the agenda for Zelensky.
03:41Kyiv has not shared details on the President's trip nor confirmed rumors of possible Ukrainian
03:46participation in Riyadh.
03:53European leaders are set to gather in Paris for an emergency summit on the war in Ukraine
03:57to discuss recent developments next week.
04:00The summit aims to discuss Europe's response as the United States looks to move ahead with
04:04Russia peace talks.
04:06Over the past few days, Washington has made clear its desire to broker a peace deal in
04:10Ukraine but has ruled out including Europe in the negotiations.
04:14The development has angered European leaders who say no lasting peace can be achieved without
04:19European involvement.
04:21The summit has not yet been officially confirmed, but European officials at the Munich Security
04:26Conference have hinted at it likely happening on Monday.
04:29Washington's decision to exclude Europe comes despite Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky's
04:33insistence on the involvement of Brussels.
04:36Speaking at the conference in Germany, he called for the formation of a European army.
04:41Zelensky says the days where Europe can rely on the U.S. are over, arguing that the continent
04:46must reduce its reliance on anyone but itself.
04:48As Germany is going for an early election in a few days, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and
04:57his main challengers went on TV for a live debate with the opposition leaders.
05:01The Greens candidate Robert Habeck, CDU's leader Friedrich Merz and Alice Weidel of
05:07the far-right Alternative for Germany all shared their views on a wide range of topics.
05:13The Ukraine must be a democratic, sovereign nation whose heads will not be decided.
05:20We as Europeans will not allow that.
05:22That's why I'm going to Paris tomorrow and I'm going to talk to a lot of friends there
05:26where we're going to meet to discuss exactly that.
05:29Germany has Ukraine, yes.
05:31And with the promise that these meetings of the last days and weeks will take place in
05:35Paris, that Emmanuel Macron has taken charge of the trade office and that the German Chancellor
05:39is going to be a guest there for hours, is not the role that I imagine for Germany in
05:44such a meeting.
05:48I don't think the Germans are interested in what the Americans give them as election
05:51recommendations.
05:52I think that's where the people in Germany will make their own decisions.
05:56We are not hearing from election recommendations from dubious vice presidents.
06:00That's not what worries me in the first place.
06:03That's not part of it.
06:04That's a style break.
06:05But it's not about style questions.
06:06What happened in the last few weeks and with the Munich Security Conference, you can't
06:11take that seriously enough, because the Trump administration is launching a frontal attack
06:16on the values of the West.
06:22First of all, I welcome the fact that J.D.
06:25Vance, the vice president of the United States, has expressed himself so clearly.
06:30He has made himself known for his freedom of expression.
06:33And he has made himself known that you can't build firewalls to exclude millions of voters
06:37from the front line.
06:39We have to talk to each other.
06:40He made that clear.
06:41And he also made it clear, just like Donald Trump, that finally a ceasefire in Ukraine
06:48will be negotiated and peace will be established.
06:51By the way, that's what the AfD has demanded for almost three years now.
06:57The election, which many believe to be the most important one of recent German history,
07:01will take place on the 23rd of February.
07:06North Korean leader Kim Jong-un attended a groundbreaking ceremony for new apartment
07:11construction on the anniversary of his late father's birthday, state media reported on
07:15Monday.
07:16Video from state broadcaster KRT showed Kim Jong-un making a speech at the groundbreaking
07:20event.
07:21This time, the footage included his voice, which is rare.
07:27He spoke to a crowd of construction workers and then twisted the switch to ignite explosions.
07:35The project is in the suburbs of the capital Pyongyang, called the Hwasong district.
07:39It's a part of a push to build 50,000 new apartments within five years.
07:46The BAFTA goes to Conclave.
07:50Papal thriller Conclave, starring Ralph Fiennes, was the big winner at the BAFTA's Taking Home
07:55Prizes, including Best Picture.
08:15Epic drama The Brutalist equaled the awards tally, scooping four trophies, including Best
08:20Director and Best Actor for Adrian Brody.
08:25This is really about this pursuit of leaving something meaningful, and I think that's something
08:32we can all relate to.
08:34So I congratulate you all.
08:39Mikey Madison won the Best Actress for Palme d'Or winner Enora.
08:45I really wasn't expecting this.
08:47I probably should have listened to my publicist and wrote a speech or something.
08:52And the BAFTA goes to Zoe Saldana.
08:56Kieran Culkin won the Supporting Performer Prize for his role in A Real Pain, while Zoe
09:01Saldana took home the Supporting Actress Award for Emilia Perez.
09:05How do you begin to even approach a film that just defies categorization?
09:11And you start by taking the lead with Jacques Audiard.
09:16So thank you so very much.
09:19Brady Corbet.
09:23Brady Corbet won the Best Director for The Brutalist.
09:28I'm very grateful, all the same, to my cast, my crew, my family.
09:35Thank you for dealing with me for the last seven or eight years.
09:40Amanda Anissimova won the WTA 1000 Women's Final here at the Khalifa International Tennis
09:45Stadium in Qatar.
09:46It was a 6-4, 6-3 straight set victory for the 23-year-old American, who's back in top
09:51form after taking a mental health break in 2023.
09:55Anissimova lifted the trophy on Saturday night after winning the biggest title of her career,
10:00set to bring her world ranking to number 18.
10:03Now attention shifts to the men's circuit.
10:07Five of the top ten men's players are here, with one shocking absence.
10:11World number one Yannick Sinner, seen here practicing in Doha just last week, agreed
10:16to a three-month ban from the World Anti-Doping Association.
10:20A dark cloud has hovered over Sinner since last March, when the 23-year-old tested positive
10:25twice for a banned substance.
10:27But there's still plenty of star power on hand, including 24-time Grand Slam champion
10:32Novak Djokovic, who's back, determined to win his 100th singles title this week.
10:37The 37-year-old Serbian fan-favorite is looking to get back on track after a hamstring injury
10:41forced him to drop out of the Australian Open last month.
10:44With Sinner out of the competition, attention turns to the number one seed.
10:48Earlier this week, I sat down with 21-year-old Spanish superstar Carlos Alcaraz and asked
10:53him how he feels being compared to legends like Nadal, Federer and Djokovic.
11:01The week-long men's tournament begins on Monday and there's more than 10,000 spectators
11:31with 2.5 million euros up for grabs for the player who lifts the trophy.
