The head of Ofsted says school holidays should be shorter to give children more learning time. Do children get too many holidays, should terms be longer?
Transcript
00:00I think they say it helps with inequality if the terms are longer actually because if you're a rich parent you can afford to pay for all sorts of extracurriculars and private tuition and all that sort of thing in the holiday.
00:15But it's difficult because when I was a kid I didn't want to have more school.
00:19From experience, the terms that are currently in place, kids are exhausted by the last week.
00:25I don't think that children have too many holidays. I'm not a big fan of school generally in the way that it's structured, I'm a big fan of education.
00:34But I think that actually the quality of education needs to be better and that's at a structural level, that's got nothing to do with kids.
00:46So yeah, schools are not very nice places for kids a lot of the time.
00:50I think it's actually, in the uni it's important for the holidays to be not too short because a lot of people need to work, get part time jobs.
