00:00 I think there is, I think there's wonderful support in mainstream education for children,
00:03 but the reality is resources and investment into schools is quite challenging at the moment,
00:09 so the things that schools would like to do, they can't. The things and the programmes that
00:13 they might want to offer every single child, they can't get every single child to access them.
00:17 There are lots of challenges that a young person faces when attending school.
00:25 The new estimates by the GEM report and the UIS show that 244 million children and youths between
00:33 the age of 6 and 18 worldwide were still missing out on school in 2021. In order to combat this,
00:39 some schools offer alternative pathways to help those with additional needs.
00:45 Academy 21 is one of these schools. Academy 21 provides live interactive teaching,
00:51 working with schools and local authorities to deliver quality alternative provisions.
00:57 Let's find out more. So we are a leading online school in the United Kingdom and internationally.
01:04 We run a full curriculum in Kingsley High, one of our schools, where students can access a whole
01:10 suite of qualifications, live and recorded lessons for every qualification that they're looking for
01:16 from primary school age right up through to sixth form. We have clubs, we have as well as
01:22 ex-curriculars, we've got loads of support, pastoral structure, the students can do their
01:26 complete learning online. At Academy 21, which is the part of the school that I'm in charge of,
01:30 we actually offer schools an alternative provision to give students a really broad curriculum in
01:36 English, Maths, Science and other subjects, so that for those students who are finding it really
01:39 hard to come in or schools can't get them to come into school or they're not feeling confident or
01:43 connected with their physical school education, they can come to online school. There are lots
01:48 of problems children in education face in this day and age. Let's find out more about these issues
01:54 and what can be done to help them. So when we talk about attendance or absence, we know from
02:03 the media that this is a really significant issue. There are lots of challenges and it's a very
02:07 complex area of looking after young people. For example, we've obviously recently come through
02:14 the pandemic and that has set routines for students where their learning doesn't always
02:18 take place or hasn't always taken place in school, they've been taught in their homes and so for lots
02:22 of them they've got into routines where they feel more comfortable, more safe and secure in a
02:26 different environment and that makes it hard for some schools and some parents to get them back
02:32 into that rhythm of going into their setting. Other challenges beneath that that causes those
02:37 things are lots of children will face anxiety about being in quite intense environments as
02:42 schools can be. There can be mental health challenges, physical health challenges, but
02:47 also some students see education now as something they can access in many different ways. So whereas
02:53 we are seeking for our children to be present in physical spaces to do their learning, for some of
02:59 them they don't necessarily think that's the way that they want to go and school isn't quite the
03:03 right fit for them.
