00:00The brutal rape and murder of a young doctor in Kolkata has shaken the entire country,
00:09with India's Supreme Court also stepping in and coming down heavily on Mamata Banerjee's
00:13government and its handling of the incident.
00:16It has actually been quite infuriating to see how the state government has handled this
00:20entire situation, because you would expect better from a woman chief minister, but everything
00:25from the way the principal of the medical college was transferred, from the way a mob
00:30was allowed to vandalize the hospital premises when a protest was taking place, it all really
00:36stinks and it goes to show that when it comes to women's safety in India, it's really lip
00:41service from politicians.
00:43In the aftermath of the Nirbhaya incident, new laws were also framed in the country,
00:47but it proves that the death penalty by itself is not really a deterrent.
00:51What is needed is speedy justice, quick trials that are completed in a time-bound manner
00:57so that people know that there are consequences for their actions.
01:01Unfortunately, that still isn't happening.
01:03And at the end of the day, when politicians say that these incidents should not be politicized,
01:08I would like to say that they should.
01:10It's time to make violence against women a huge political issue and for women to be able
01:16to feel safe in spaces, whether it's their homes and places of work.
01:21We shouldn't have to work in the day or not work late hours because it might be deemed
01:26unsafe.
01:27We really do need to reclaim the night.
