In the spring of 2020, Maria Young, a vibrant 41-year-old director of conference services, led an active life filled with boot camps and yoga sessions. Despite her health consciousness, Maria contracted COVID-19 before vaccines were available. Her symptoms escalated rapidly, leading to severe respiratory distress. With her oxygen levels plummeting to 40%, she was hospitalized and placed on a ventilator and ECMO, the most intensive form of life support. During her three-month hospitalization, Maria faced numerous complications, including collapsed lungs, infections, and delirium. Isolated from her family due to pandemic restrictions, she endured a solitary battle for survival.
Upon awakening from sedation in February 2021, Maria embarked on the arduous journey of relearning basic functions: walking, talking, and swallowing. Her determination was fueled by the support of her loved ones and a newfound purpose. Recognizing the critical need for support in critical care, she founded "Maria’s Miracle," a non-profit dedicated to funding medical training and assisting families navigating prolonged ICU stays. Maria also became a vocal advocate for vaccination, sharing her story to emphasize the seriousness of the virus and the importance of preventive measures. Her experience transformed her perspective, highlighting the fragility of health and the resilience of the human spirit.
