Patients with chronic knee issues are getting life-changing relief at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC) in Abu Dhabi, a pioneer in advanced robotic surgery.
SSMC is one of the UAE’s premier hospitals, and a joint venture between Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) and Mayo Clinic, utilising cutting-edge robotic technology to perform intricate surgical procedures.

00:00Robotic surgery is a minimally invasive surgery that came to existence around 20 years ago
00:12and has developed a lot during the last 20 years.
00:15You can do all laparoscopic surgery using this innovative new technology which allows
00:20the surgeons to be in much better control and for the patient it allows much less pain,
00:26smaller scars and a better recovery so the patient can go home most of the time on the
00:31same day and they can go back to work within two or three days.
00:35And comparing to conventional surgery or laparoscopic surgery, this technology is much, much better
00:41and it's more economical for the patient and the hospitals at the same time.
00:45In robotic surgery we have two added advantages which you don't have in laparoscopic surgery,
00:50mainly the magnification and the quality of the image and also a better control.
00:55So when the robot does the surgery I have better control over my instrument and I find
01:00robotic surgery giving an excellent result and it's very useful in hernia surgeries,
01:06in guanohernia, umbilical hernia, incisional hernia, there is a huge difference and when
01:12I do a patient they usually tell us I did not need to use any painkillers and there
01:17is a big, big difference in pain and the requirements for analgesia and the recovery period.
01:23It's also important in cancer surgery, so at SSMC we do right hemicolectomy, we do left
01:29hemicolectomy for colon cancer, we do anterior resection for rectal cancers and in gynecology
01:34they can take the uterus, do ovarian surgery and multiple other operations like nephrectomy
01:41is also good surgery for robotic surgery and in general surgery also we do the anti-reflex
01:48surgery so for patients with reflex symptoms we can do three or four operations with robotic
01:53surgery.
01:54We started our program only for 2022 and 2023 and so far we have done robotic surgery for
02:01general surgery, for colorectal surgery, for gynecology and for urology and until today
02:07we have completed 214 major surgical robotic procedures.
02:13Using new in a patient and especially robotic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and artificial
02:19intelligence is very important and it's the future of healthcare worldwide.
02:25That's why we are really keen on acquiring all this technology and advancing it and use
02:30it in our clinical practice so there's no danger of using it and basically it's the
02:35future.
02:36If you don't use it you will get left behind.
02:39There is a misconception in the outside there with the public, people think the robot does
02:43the surgery by itself.
02:45To correct this the surgeon does the surgery and it's exactly the same procedures whether
02:50you do it open, you do it laparoscopic or you use the robot.
02:53The robot is a device that will help you to perform the surgery but it does not do the
02:57surgery.
02:58You sit in the console and you control every single movement of the robot so you tell the
03:03robot what to do, you control every movement of the robot and the robot will just allow
03:08you to do the same operation but in a better way and a more decisive way and more controlled
03:14way.
03:15So it's exactly the same instrument, the same operation and the robot will just help you
03:20to do it in a better way but at the end the surgeon is doing the surgery and he's in control
03:25and the surgeon decides what to do, when to do it and how to do it.
03:29The robot is just a clever machine that will allow you to do it in a better way.
