British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s recent U-turns on some of the UK’s key climate commitments expose the hypocrisy of developed countries on climate change. They make grand promises at global meetings but do not walk the talk at home. Sunak is a prime example.

Earlier this month, he announced, among other things, that the UK would push back a crucial deadline for selling new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035. More announcements are expected over the next few weeks as a beleaguered Tory leadership is desperately trying to catch up with Labour in the polls ahead of next year’s general elections.

00:00British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's U-turn on a key climate policy in his country, wherein
00:09he's pushed back a deadline for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035,
00:16has been roundly criticised by experts and environmentalists and even from members of
00:21his own Conservative Party.
00:22Now, he's doing this for election reasons, for political reasons, the Tories are lagging
00:28behind Labour in the polls and Rishi Sunak is hoping that by taking a not-so-hard line
00:33on climate mitigation, he might be able to win over a section of the electorate.
00:38But this has consequences in the fight against climate change globally.
00:43For one, it shows the hypocrisy of much of the developed world when it comes to these
00:46issues.
00:47They say one thing on global platforms and at global summits, but don't quite walk the
00:52talk at home.
00:53And we are in the midst of an acute climate crisis.
00:56It's no secret, as the UN itself has pointed out in its reports, that we're not close to
01:01meeting the kind of targets that countries had set during the Paris COP summit back in
01:052015.
01:07And now as countries get ready to meet again for the next COP meeting in a couple of months,
01:11it's clear that the challenges remain and that in fact, they have only increased in
01:17the intervening period.
