00:00And to give us more details about the dengue outbreak in Quezon City, we will talk to Dr. Rolando Cruz, the Chief Epidemiologist of the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit.
00:12Good morning, Dr. Rolando Cruz, and thank you for accepting our call.
00:17Good morning to all of our listeners and viewers.
00:23In our first question, how is the state of dengue cases here in Quezon City? Has the number of cases decreased since the dengue outbreak was declared?
00:33As you may remember, our mayor ordered the opening of the health center on Saturday and Sunday.
00:39We have people who were diagnosed with dengue that came to us on Sunday.
00:44Later, we will issue new numbers of dengue cases here in Quezon City.
00:50As of February 14, we were able to identify 1,769 cases of dengue and 10 people died.
01:01What is the reason why the number of dengue cases increased? Is it normal for the number of dengue cases to increase in the first quarter of 2025?
01:12We did not expect this because usually in times like this, the number of dengue cases decreases.
01:20But we were able to see that there are still intermittent rains.
01:27And we know that this is adding to our breeding sites.
01:35Mosquitoes will become breeding sites in our homes if it rains.
01:43And unfortunately, dengue virus is spreading.
01:49What are the various barangays in Quezon City doing to open their borders so that the virus will not spread?
01:59Our priority right now, as ordered by Mayor Joy, is to feed the adult mosquitoes so that they will not be able to bite.
02:08So we are spraying extensive chemical control in the clusters areas in the barangay.
02:16That is the priority right now for our barangay leaders in our 142 barangays in Quezon City.
02:26Do our barangay health centers have the capability to receive patients with dengue or do they have the capability to send them to hospitals?
02:37Yes, we have. So we need all hands on deck.
02:42The government of Quezon City, the health center is open every Saturday and Sunday.
02:46We have dengue test kits there.
02:49And if we need to bring them to the hospital, we have barangays that will help us.
02:57We have ambulances and DRMOs to bring them to our hospitals.
03:03Last question, Dr. Cruz, what is your advice to our residents here in Quezon City so that they can avoid dengue?
03:11Dengue fever is caused by the bite of mosquitoes.
03:19If there are no mosquitoes, there is no transmission of dengue.
03:22So we need to clean or search and destroy.
03:26Not because the house is clean, but because there are no mosquitoes.
03:29If there are mosquitoes there, it means that we are being affected by the mosquitoes.
03:34We have stagnant water inside the house and inside our house.
03:39So we need to clean.
03:41And if the child has a fever, bring it to your doctor or to our nearest health center.
03:48Thank you very much for your time, Dr. Rolando Cruz of the Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit.
