00:00Hello and welcome to your economic round-up on May 1.
00:15We start in Morocco, where a total of 414 innovative tourism projects have been pre-selected as part of the incubation program launched by the Ministry of Tourism, Crafts and Social and Solidarity Economy
00:28and the Moroccan Society of Tourism Engineering, SMIT.
00:32A key initiative of the 2023-2026 roadmap aimed at enriching and modernizing the national tourism offer.
00:39Equipped with an envelope of 156 million dirhams, this program, launched in September 2024, aims to boost tourism investment
00:47by focusing on innovative experiences in three strategic segments, namely gastronomy, leisure and digital gamification.
00:56The selected projects are divided into three categories, 253 in gastronomy, 111 in gaming and 50 in digital.
01:04These start-ups will be evaluated by the funding commissions, which will determine the eligible donors for a grant of 400,000 dirhams
01:12as well as an intensive incubation to facilitate their access to the market.
01:17This initiative is part of Morocco's ambition to welcome 26 million tourists by 2030
01:23and focus on innovative tourism start-ups to create unique experiences, thus strengthening the positioning of the destination on the global tourism scene.
01:32Still in the kingdom, the production of watermelon has experienced a sharp decline in 2023,
01:37showing a significant decrease of 140.23 million kilograms compared to the previous year.
01:44This decline is explained by the persistent drought that affects the country, making the situation even more worrying.
01:51Harvesting is becoming just as difficult due to the scarcity of water resources.
01:55According to data from the specialized platform Horton Info, Morocco ranks 20th in the world of watermelon producers,
02:02having recorded in 2023 a total production of 462.72 million kilograms on an area of 14,582 hectares.
02:13This corresponds to an average yield of 3.17 kilograms per square meter.
02:18Despite a slight increase in the area of 324 hectares, production has nevertheless fallen,
02:24a phenomenon that the report attributes directly to the harmful effects of drought and the scarcity of water resources.
02:31The watermelon season is therefore facing bad omens,
02:34marked by a serious shortage of supplies and growing concerns about the quality of fruits.
