00:00Odors are stronger than words, appearances and emotions.
00:12Imagine of a world we have altered sensation of smell.
00:18Think of a world where we cannot enjoy the fragrances.
00:24The topic is even more prevalent since the onset of COVID-19.
00:29Ayurveda explains about five sensory organs, the eyes, nostrils, ears, tongue and the skin.
00:40And Ayurveda also explains about mind which is considered as the king of all sense organs.
00:48To indulge the sense organs in their respective object, it is a function of mind.
00:57Mind connects with the intellect.
01:00Intellect determines the specific properties of the object of sense organs.
01:06Skewed or excessive or deficient or improper association of senses with their objects of
01:15focus together with the mind leads to abnormal sensations.
01:22While proper association returns such sensations to the normal state.
01:29Therefore, stress, migraine, neurological, psychological and psychiatric issues are surely
01:37considered in Ayurveda as reasons for conditions like increased sensitivity to smell, a condition
01:47called as hyperosmia, decreased sense of smell, a condition called hyposmia, loss of smell
01:57or anosmia or distorted sense of smell called parosmia.
02:04Ayurveda also explains about certain hemorrhagic conditions where there is smell of iron, fish,
02:13blood are felt.
02:16Pudinasa is a term used by Ayurveda to denote foul or altered smell in the nostrils.
02:26Another common reason for foul smell or altered smell in the nose are upper respiratory tract
02:32infections.
02:33Nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis can also result in altered smell perceptions
02:42in the nostrils.
02:45Ayurveda explains about 18 types of nasal diseases and pudinasa or the foul smell sensation
02:54it is associated with all these 18 types of nasal diseases.
03:00Treatment of pudinasa as explained in Ayurveda is vada kapha balancing in nature.
03:07Vada specifically prana vada is the vital force as per Ayurveda which governs the physiology
03:16of perception of the sensory organs.
03:20Ayurveda recommends herbs, treatments like emesis therapy, nasal drops for the treatment
03:28of pudinasa.
03:29Consult an Ayurvedic doctor for prescription based medicines.
03:36Ayurveda suggests to avoid cold water bath or cold water head bath and application of
03:44hair oils while suffering from this altered sensory perceptions.
03:50Also avoid exposure to cold breeze and avoid intake of cold water and cold food.
03:57One should avoid exposure to strong perfumes, exposure to dust, pollens and the allergic
04:03substances.
04:06Ensure quality sleep at night time.
04:09You may consume water boiled with herbs like dried ginger, coriander seeds, basil leaves
04:15or cumin seeds.
04:18The Ayurvedic definition of health is not just about the well-being of body, mind and
04:25the soul.
04:26It is also about the healthy functioning of our sense organs including the olfactory senses.
